1 INTRODUCTION
The ARISTO 2000 is one of the most useful welding systems on the market. To gain
full advantage of your welding equipment, please read this user manual.
You’ll discover many functions that will both simplify and improve your work.
All settings are made from the PUA 1 controller.
You’ll soon notice how easy it is to use. To quickly find topics of special interest in the
user manual, please see the following:
Section 1: Introduction and basics
Sections 2--5: MIG, STICK, TIG and carbon arc gouging, settings directly related to
these welding parameters.

1.2 Using the Controller
The controller can be said to consist of two units; the working memory and the
weld data memory.

The working memory is used to store a complete set of welding parameters, which
can then be saved in the weld data memory.
The welding process is always controlled by the contents of the working memory.
This also makes it possible to download a set of welding parameters from the weld
data memory to the working memory.
Note that the working memory always contains the last set of welding parameters
that were used, in other words the working memory is never empty or ”initialized”.

The controller is available in various language versions with up to four different
languages per version. English is always one of the four.

Cursor
The cursor is shown in this manual as a box around the selected text. The controller
cursor actually appears as a shaded field with the selected text highlighted in white.
Text Boxes
At the bottom of the display are five boxes containing text that explains the current
functions of the five keys in a line below them.

To extend the life of the display illumination, it is switched off after three minutes if
thereisnoactivity.

1.5 Buttons
Using the arrow buttons you can move the cursor to different lines in
the display.
Pressing the menu button always brings you back to the main menu.
The plus/minus buttons are used to increase (+) or decrease (--) the value
of a setting. The two plus/minus buttons are each marked with their own symbol.
Most settings can be entered with either the plus or minus button, but certain
settings must be made with the button marked or with the button marked (the
symbols appear in the display).
Rapid pressing of a button increases or decreases a setting in small steps. If the
button is held down longer, the size of the steps increases.
Soft buttons
The five buttons--called soft buttons”--are along
the bottom edge of the display window. These
can have varying functions, depending on
your location in the menu structure. Texts
indicating the current button functions are
shown at the bottom of the display (a white
dot beside a function text indicates an active
function).

1.6 Settings in General
There are three main types of settings:
S Settings with numerical values
S Settings with fixed options
S Settings of the type ON/OFF or YES/NO
1.6.1 Numerical Settings
To set a numerical value, you can use either the plus or minus buttons to increase or
decrease a fixed value.

Certain settings are made by selecting an alternative from a list. The list might look
like this:
Here the cursor is placed on the line for MIG. By pressing the ENTER button now
you would select the MIG option.
If instead you want to choose another option, you would move the cursor to the
chosen line by moving up or down using the arrow buttons . You can then press
the ENTER button.
If you wanted to exit the list without making a selection, you would simply press the
QUIT button.
For some settings there are so many options that they cannot all be displayed at the
same time. An arrow at the top or bottom of the list indicates that more options will
become visible if you scroll up or down using the arrow buttons.
1.6.3 ON/OFF or YES/NO Settings
With certain functions you can switch the setting to ON or OFF, or to YES or NO. The
synergetic function in MIG and STICK welding is an example of such a function.
ON/OFF or YES/NO settings can be selected in either of two ways:
You can select ON or OFF or YES or NO from a list of options as described above.
Or you can use the plus/minus keys to select ON/OFF or YES/NO.
S +(plus) = ON or YES
S --(minus)=OFForNO
1.7 ENTER and QUIT
Both of the ”soft” buttons at the bottom right are reserved for ENTER and (QUIT).
S Pressing ENTER confirms the selected option in a menu or list.
S Pressing QUIT brings you back to the previous menu or display.

2 MIG Welding
2.1 The Expression ”Wire”
With MIG welding, the electrode is wound on a reel (or drum). In this manual. an
electrode of this type is referred to as wire.
2.2 Synergetic Welding
Each combination of wire type, wire diameter and gas mix requires a unique
relationship between wire feed speed and voltage (arc length) to attain a stable arc.
ARISTO 2000 has a number of pre--programmed “synergetic lines”.
When you choose a pre--programmed synergetic line corresponding to your wire
type, wire diameter and gas mix, you need only set a wire feed speed appropriate for
your welding piece. The voltage is adjusted automatically in accordance with your
choice of pre--programmed synergetic line, making it much easier to quickly find
correct welding parameters.
The synergetic function for welding current may be used with MIG welding. The user
sets the values for:
S method
S wire type
S shielding gas
S wire dimension
Based on these basic settings and the value specified for wire feed speed, a
microprocessor works out suitable values for the various welding technical
parameters. These parameter types are dependent on the chosen welding method
(dip/spray or pulse). For more information, see ”Weld data settings” under
section 2.4.
It is possible to weld with wire and shielding gas combinations other than those
available on the controller. However, the user will have to set values for one or more
parameters.
2.3 Basic Settings
Basic settings are made from the controller’s main menu.

2.4 Weld Data Settings
The following is a summary of the welding parameters that affect the welding
process when using MIG welding methods.
With the power source in synergetic mode it is only necessary to set the wire feed
speed.
The voltag e parameter may also be adjusted if required.
When the wire feed speed is adjusted, the synergetic control system automatically
adjusts certain other parameters to compensate. The parameters in italics remain
constant and are unaffected by changes in the wire feed speed.

2.5 Start and stop data
The following settings affect the start and stop cycles for MIG welding.
Under the respective headings, are all settings that affect the start cycle and welding
stop.

There are three different functions that are designed to meet special requirements at
the start and end of the welding. These functions and auxiliary settings are made in
the start data menu and stop data menu.

Hot Start
The hot start function is selected when a hotter arc is necessary at cycle start, so
that welding faults are avoided at the beginning of a weld.
Crater Fill
The crater fill function makes it easier to avoid porosity and crater cracking in the
weld metal when you stop welding.
Creep Start
The creep start function gives a lower wire feed speed and can be used to maintain
the best possible start. The creep start speed is 50% of the set wire feed speed. The
function is activated upon delivery.
TIP! The hot start, creep start and crater fill functions can be switched on or off using
the ”soft buttons,“ see the section on ”MIG” configuration under section 9.2.4.2.
The start data and stop data menus are used to set the values for the following
parameters.
Gas Pre-- and Post--Flow
The parameters gas pre--flow and gas post--flow specify the length of time that the
gas continues to flow before and after welding.
Burnback Time
Burnback time is used to adjust the length of the electrode after welding.
2.6 Gas Purge. Cold Wire Feed and 2--Stroke/4--Stroke
The following three functions can be controlled with soft button (as can functions
such as hot start). For a description of how this is done, see “MIG configuration”
under section 9.2.4.2.
Gas purge
The gas purge function is used to fill the gas hoses with shielding gas, or for
measurement of gas flow. When the button is pressed, gas purging starts; when it is
released, gas purging stops.
Cold Wire Feed
This function is used to feed wire out manually when fitting a new reel of wire. When
the button is pressed, the wire is fed forward; when the button is released, wire feed
stops.
2--Stroke or 4--Stroke
During MIG welding the torch button can function in two ways/ 2--stroke or 4--stroke.
The switching function for 2--stroke/4--stroke can be set on one of the soft buttons.
The difference between 2--stroke and 4--stroke is illustrated in the following figures,
along with other functions of the start and stop cycles.

Using 2--stroke, any gas pre--flow starts when the torch trigger is pressed in (1).
Welding data then rises to the set values or any pre--set Hot start values. When the
torch trigger is released (2), any crater fill is started. After this the values for welding
data return to zero and any gas post--flow completes the welding sequence.
TIP! If the torch trigger is pressed in again during crater fill, you can extend the
welding by the crater fill’s final data at any time (the dashed line). The crater fill can
also be interrupted when the torch trigger is quickly pressed in and then released
during the crater fill.

During 4--stroke, gas pre--flow starts when the torch trigger is pressed in (1). When
the torch trigger is released (2), welding data goes up to the pre--set values. When
the torch trigger is pressed in again (3) any crater filling is started. After this the
values for welding data go down to stop data.
Any gas post--flow starts when the torch trigger is released (4).
TIP! The crater fill stops when the torch trigger is released (4). If the contact is
instead pressed in for a longer time, welding continues with the crater fill’s final data
(the dashed line).

Under section 9.2.4.
2.8 Setting Example MIG
The following is an example of how to set the controller for MIG welding using
dip/spray transfer. Setting for pulse welding is done in a similar way. The example
assumes that the power source is in synergetic mode.
2.8.1 Basic Settings
You can use the main menu to make settings such as wire, method and material
type.
We start by pressing the MENU key to bring up the main menu. We will make the
following five settings:

2.8.2 Weld Data Settings
From the settings menu, you can set values for various welding parameters, such as
voltage and wire feed speed. By activating the synergetic function, many of these
settings will be handled by a microprocessor.
We begin by pressing the MENU button to display the main menu. Press the SET
button to view the settings menu. We’ll now make the following settings:
