OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS for
F15-330
June, 2006
z Prevent leaks.
z Do not change CGA inlet connection from number
stamped on regulator body.
z Follow operating instructions on this sheet.
z This regulator must be installed, operated and
maintained only by trained servicemen.
z For complete safety information on welding and
cutting equipment, read Form 2035 (oxy-fuel gas)
and 52-529 (arc welding). For safety information
on gases, see your supplier.
INSTALLATION & OPERATION
TO CONNECT:
1. Open the cylinder valve slightly, for an instant, to
blow out any dust or dirt that may have collected in
the valve outlet. BE SURE to keep your face away
from the valve outlet to protect your eyes.
2. Attach the regulator to the cylinder valve. Align
the regulator so that the flowmeter is vertical and
then tighten the connection nut with a wrench. (Do
NOT use the flowmeter tube as a "handle" when
attaching the regulator.
3. Make sure that the flow control valve on the flow-
meter is closed.
4. Open the cylinder valve SLOWLY.
5. Attach hose to the flowmeter outlet and to the equip-
ment with which the gas is to be used. Tighten the
connecting nuts with a wrench.
DESCRIPTION
The R-72-FM-580 is a small, compact regulator/flow-
meter combination calibrated for use with argon, he-
lium, nitrogen, and C-25 (75% argon - 25% carbon diox-
ide). It is equipped with a CGA 580 inlet connection
and a standard "B" inert gas connection (5/8—18 RH
female). The scales marked on the square plastic tube
are calibrated in cubic feet per hour (CFH). This tube
can be rotated by hand so that any scale can be read
from a convenient position. The range of each cali-
brated scale is as follows:
Argon - 10 to 70 CFH (4.7 to 33 L/min)
Helium - 20 to 220 CFH (9.4 to 103 L/min)
Nitrogen - 10 to 80 CFH (4.7 to 38 L/min)
C-25 - 10 to 65 CFH (4.7 to 31 L/min)
To convert to liters per minute (L/min) multiply the scale
reading by 0.47.
For gas mixtures other than C-25, consult your gas
supplier for the conversion factor that will apply to one
of the calibrated scales.
INERT GAS OR CARBON DIOXIDE can cause suf-
focation in confined spaces.
z Always work in well ventilated area.
The INSTRUCTIONS contained in this booklet are intended specifically for operators who know the general principles of operation and safe
practices to be followed in operating this type of equipment. If you are not sure that you understand these principles fully, we urge you to
read our booklet "Precautions and Safe Practices for Arc Welding, Cutting and Gouging", Form 52-529, in addition to these instructions. Do
NOT permit untrained persons to install, operate, or maintain this equipment. Do NOT attempt to install or operate this equipment until you
have read and fully understand these instructions. If you do not fully understand these instructions, contact your supplier for further
information.
The regulator-flowmeter covered by these Instructions is listed by Underwriter's Laboratories only when using parts manufactured by ESAB
Welding & Cutting Products to the specifications on file with Underwriter's Laboratories, Inc. and when used in the gas service for which it
is designed and listed. The use of other parts voids the manufacturer's warranty.

TO REGULATE FLOW:
Flow is controlled by adjusting the flowmeter valve until
the desired flow is indicated by the ball float in the flow-
meter tube. Always take the reading across the TOP
of the ball.
IMPORTANT: Before starting operations, test all con-
nections with a suitable Leak Test So-
lution, such as P/N 998771 (8 oz. con-
tainer). Correct any leaks before start-
ing work. Testing should be performed
after torch or a gas - using device has
been properly connected.
TO STOP WORK:
When work is to be stopped for a half-hour or more, or
when the regulator is to be disconnected from the cyl-
inder, proceed as follows:
1. Close the cylinder valve.
2. Open flowmeter valve and all valves downstream
to release trapped gas in regulator and hose.
3. When pressure gauge on regulator drops to zero,
close flowmeter valve.
INLET FILTER MAINTENANCE:
Each regulator is equipped with a porous metal inlet
filter, P/N 71Z33, pressed into the regulator inlet nipple.
No regulator should be connected to a cylinder or sta-
tion valve unless it contains this filter. You can replace
the filter if you have reason to do so. To remove a
filter, insert a No. 1 'EZY-OUT' or a No. 6 wood screw
(about 2-in. long) into the filter and pull it out. Press
the new filter into the nipple with a 1/4-on. round metal
rod.
REPAIR SERVICE:
Regulators in need of repair should be returned to your
distributor or to ESAB Remanufacturing Center, 411
S. Ebenezer Road, Florence, S C 29501.
NOTE: Safety release device equipped on this regula-
tor-flowmeter is designed for regulator protec-
tion: not for hose or equipment downstream. If
gas escapes through the vent hoses of the cap,
immediately close cylinder valve, and then re-
move regulator-flowmeter from the service for
repair.
