What is MAGIX cover & label PLUS?
MAGIX cover & label PLUS is a virtual studio for printing
labels and covers for CDs, DVDs and VHS cassettes. Stick-
ers, covers, inlays and booklets can be designed and printed
in precisely to your needs.
Both normal paper sheets and prefabricated sheets with
perforated stickers can be used for printing, as found in
trade stores.
The clipart gallery provided offers a large quantity of im-
ages and backgrounds which can be combined into new
cover motifs. Your own pictures can also be used. Via drag
& drop, all pictures can be loaded, placed together on the
working area, equipped with texts, and printed out in a suit-
able format.
The LP Wizard looks after the scanning of 12” vinyl records.
LPs are too large for most scanners they are therefore
scanned in two steps and thereafter automatically merged
to form a uniform CD/DVD cover. The CD/DVD Wizard
reduces CD/DVD cover, label and inlay scanning to just a
couple of clicks.
6
Tutorial
Let’s begin with a concrete CD project! Even if you don’t
intend to create a CD printing project, the following proce-
dure is nevertheless recommended: It will allow you to
quickly become acquainted with MAGIX cover & label
PLUS so as to realize other projects, because the funda-
mental working procedures are alike for all project types.
1. Open new project
After starting the program, the ”New Project” start-up win-
dow opens offering three options:
create a new project without templates (Option: ”Empty
Project”)
call up the templates included (Option: ”Template As-
sistant”)
scan an existing CD or DVD (Option: ”Scanner Assis-
tant”).
Let’s assume that you’d to create a CD project from scratch,
with label sticker, inlay and cover. Select the ”Empty Project”
option in the start-up window.
2. Select project type
You are now confronted with the Project Type selection
window.. Here you can select from a total of 5 project types:
three different CD and/or DVD projects, a purely DVD
project and a VHS project.
The project types differ from each other in two regards:
Items: ”Label”, ”Cover”, ”Inlay” and ”Booklet” are combined
differently in the project types. Labels are round stickers
for blank discs. ”Cover” designates the front and inside of
7
Tutorial
the CD box. The Inlay is the back of the CD box with the
narrow strips down the sides. The Booklet is an informa-
tion booklet that can accompany the CD or DVD into the
box.
Dimensions: Depending upon the type of project, tem-
plates are used for almost square CD boxes (jewel cases.),
oblong DVD boxes, or VHS cassettes.
Depending upon the type of project, you are offered a com-
bination of empty templates with suitable dimensions.
For a CD project with cover, inlay and label, select the pre-
set project type ”Standard CD/DVD label project” and click
on ”continue”
3. Edit front cover
The front side of an empty CD is called up on screen when
”Standard CD/DVD Label Project” is selected.
8
Tutorial
This side can now be equipped with diagrams and texts.
Usually you will want to include an artist name and a CD/
DVD name. The Playlist (and/or the table of contents) nor-
mally appears on the back of the cover or at the back of the
CD box (inlay).
Insert Text: In order to enter text, click on the Text button
and draw out a text field with the mouse. You can also click
on the template, keep the mouse button pressed, and move
the mouse. If you release the mouse button, a dialog for
the text entry opens.
As with a text processing program, you can write and for-
mat text in the dialog. Enter the title of your CD and the
artist’s name!
To format text, ”highlight” the text in the dialog by pulling
the mouse pointer over the text while pressing down the
mouse button (so that the letters are white and are framed
darkly). The marked text can now be formatted. If you click
on O.K., the text entry dialog closes.
Now the text in the text field appears on the template. You
can click and then shift the text field, or delete it again. In
order change the text later, open the text dialog by double
clicking on the text field.
Insert Graphics: There are three possibilities for loading
graphics or photos:
via the ”Browse” button, you access the graphic library
provided. The list of pictures can be shifted with the scroll
bar so that all the items can be viewed. You can of course
9
Tutorial
also use your own images. Simply click on “Insert
Cliparts” and access your graphics files directory (e.g. in
JPG or BMP format).
via the ”Search” button you can search directories or
drives for usable graphics files. You can enter a name, a
file type and a folder (e.g. ”Local drive C:”). Subsequently,
all sub-directories of the selected search item are
searched. Data found appears on the right side of the
dialog.
via the ”Scanner” button you can directly scan in photos
(for example) to be used for the CD/DVD cover. Of
course, you also need a ready-to-run scanner.
Note: In order to scan a complete CD, DVD or LP cover, it’s
best to use the Scanner Assistant
You can pull each picture from the preview list with the
mouse. Click on the picture and drag it with the mouse
button held on the template.
Arranging graphics and text fields: In principle you
can combine as many pictures and text fields as like you.
Each item can be pulled wherever you want it.
Because a concise overview can be lost quickly, you can
zoom in, i.e. increase the size of one part of the screen. The
Zooming button is in the upper right corner.
With many picture items on screen, it can sometimes be
confusing when so many overlap. You can control this prob-
lem via the View menu with the ”One level in front”, ”To
the front” or ”To the back” commands. Imagine the frames
10
Tutorial
as pieces of paper on top of each other upon your desk and
which only a part of each piece can be seen.
The size of each graphic can be changed easily by clicking
the graphic, then shifting the handle of the frame. If you
pull on the edges between the handles with the mouse, you
can then increase or reduce the edge in just one direction,
thus distorting the graphic.
4. Editing the back cover, inlay and label
Once you have completed the front cover, you’ll probably
want to work on the 3 other items of your CD project: The
back cover, the inlay and the label.
Note: If you only need the front cover, you can at this point
simply print. Select the ”Only current side” option in the print
dialog.
Begin with the back of the front cover, that is, the side which
appears when you unfold the CD. If you click the ”Back
Cover” button, you will arrive at the applicable template.
Insert: Extra (Adding a playlist): It is often the case
that the playlist appears on the back cover and inlay of the
CD. If you’ve already provided a Playlist, MAGIX cover &
label PLUS takes over the entries automatically from the
main program (e.g. MAGIX video deLuxe 2.0 PLUS,
MAGIX music cleaning lab or MAGIX mp3 maker). The
entries are updated automatically as soon as the project in
the main program is changed!
Playlist tables are normal text fields which can shift, delete
or (via double click) edit text in the text dialog.
Navigation bar: Inlay and label are accessed by means of
the button bar. There are several buttons for all project type
items: Cover, Booklet, (both for either CD or DVD), CD
Inlay, CD/DVD label and VHS labels (cassette side and
top side).
Because you are working in the ”Standard CD/DVD Label
Project”, you can switch between ”CD-Cover”, ”CD/DVD
Label” und ”CD-Inlay”.
11
Tutorial
Adding text to the ”spine”: The narrow sides at the edges
of the CD box can be likewise furnished with text. The text
must be rotated 90 degrees.
The template for the inlay offers two narrow strips on both
the left and right for the sides. Write the two text lines in
the text dialog as they should appear on the sides, , and the
select the rotation option in the context menu (right mouse-
click on the text field). Now you can rotate the text 90
degrees and drag it onto the sides.
5. Printing
Before printing you should activate the print preview in
the file menu. If everything looks the way it should, open
the print dialog via the print button (or the menu option
”Print”).
Setting the paper format: An A4 format page is always
printed. The paper format is particularly important for pre-
fabricated CD/DVD label stickers, which are organized dif-
ferently on A4 paper depending upon the manufacturer.
You can select the paper format with the ”change paper
format” button. If you want to use prefabricated CD/DVD
label stickers, select a manufacturer in this dialog (e.g. Avery
Zweckform Art. Nr. 6043).
Calibrate: Use the calibrate function to co-ordinate the
print format with your printer. Beforehand, you should print
out some samples on normal paper. You can then use the
test prints to calibrate the print format so that the print lies
precisely within the perforations of the special paper.
Print: Once everything fits, place your valuable special
paper in the printer and print out the CD project.
Note: The working methods described are the same for all project
types; only the style sheets change. When printing a booklet, the
sides must be placed in the printer in a special way. Please use
the advice in the printer dialog!
12
Wizards
You can easily scan a CD, DVD or a LP cover with the help
of the Wizards. Select the Wizard you want to use via the
menu “File”!
CD/DVD Wizard
Use the CD/DVD Wizard to scan a CD or DVD cover with
your scanner. The Wizard shows how to scan and he helps
to cut the scanned picture in the right way.
1. In the first dialog you can select the project that you would
like to scan: ”Label”, ”Cover”, ”Back”, or ”Inlay”.
2. The second dialog shows how to position the CD or DVD
cover on the scanner. Click on “Acualize” to start the pro-
cess.
3. Now the scanned picure has to be cutted. The third dia-
log shows a page frame to adjust the page boundaries.
4. That’s it. In the forth dialog you load the picture as a new
MAGIX cover & label PLUS-project.
LP Wizard
Use the LP Wizard to scan a LP cover with your scanner.
LP covers are too large to get a complete picture of the cover
in one single scan. The Wizard shows how to scan the cover
in two steps and to fit both scanned pictures together,
13
Wizards
1. First of all you scan the left part of the cover. In the first
dialog you can see how to position the left part of the cover
on your scanner. Click on “Acualize” to start the process.
2. In the next step you scan the rest of the cover. The sec-
ond dialog shows how to scan the second half of the cover.
You have to rotate the cover and adjust it with the scanner.
3. Then both segments are being added together to one
single picture of the whole cover. You can adjust each of
the pictures with the arrow buttons.
4. That’s it. In the forth dialog you load the picture as a new
MAGIX cover & label PLUS-project.
14
Work techniques
Work space
The work space in the middle displays a sheet of paper (la-
bel, cover or inlay) as it would appear when printed as
well as the ”desk surroundings”. You can also drag image
objects or text fields to positions next to the paper as you
would on a real desk while working with such objects.
Projects
New projects are loaded via the ”New” button as well as via
the ”Load” button. When loading, older projects stored on
the harddisk are opened for you to re-edit.
Undoing actions
Sometimes, you may perform an action that, for example,
diminishes rather than improves the quality of the layout.
You can always cancel an action by selecting ”Edit” in the
menu, followed by the ”Undo” option.
Context menu
The menu commands ”Edit” and ”View” and the “Rota-
tion” command for text also allow you to access the so-called
context menu. Right click on an object that’s on the work
space, and then select a command from the list – an ideal
tool for quick editing work.
Special functions such as colouring text can be realised
quickly by selecting the ”properties” option in the context
menu for a text field.
15
Work techniques
Zooming
The view can be altered with either the ”+” button (to en-
large the view) and the ”-” button (to reduce the view).
You can also zoom via the menu, which offers the magni-
fying glass, as well as both zoom button commands. You
can also reset the view of a project to the original view when
the project began.
With the magnifying glass, you can draw out a quadrangle
that defines an area to be enlarged.
Reduce or enlarge
To reduce or enlarge an image object, select an object by
clicking on it. Selected images are displayed with a ”frame”
around them.
When you manoeuvre the corner points, the image object
is enlarged or reduced while maintaining its original pro-
portions. By manoeuvring the frame from any other point
other than the corners, the image stretches or compresses
– in a word, distorts.
Grouping
Several objects can be moved or altered as one by being
grouped together via the ”Group” command in the view
menu. This is particularly practical when, for example, the
16
Work techniques
combination of a figure and a background image are per-
fectly organised, yet together need to be shifted.
A grouping is effectively consolidated as a single object and
retains a common frame. To separate the group into its
original elements, select the ”Ungroup” command.
Organising layers
You can in principle combine as many image elements as
you wish. Every element can be moved anywhere on the
work space. It often happens when working with many
images that some elements and their frames become hid-
den. The view menu helps out in this case, via the ”next
layer”, ”previous layer”, ”straight to the front” and ”straight
to the back” commands. Imagine if you will pictures on
your desk piled one on top of the other so that only a part of
the total picture can be seen.
17
Images and graphics
Insert graphic
The ”Insert Graphic” button activates the integrated graph-
ics library. To view the elements within it, use the scroll
bar at the bottom of the selection window to flick through
the list of images. The most effective method is to activate
all categories in the series and then see which images may
suit your requirements. You can pull any image from the
preview list via drag & drop onto the working interface.
Search: The ”Search” button allows you to search through
different selectable indexes for usable graphics and photos
and then displays the result in a preview list. You can pull
any image from the preview list via drag & drop onto the
work space.
Insert: Geometr. Form
You can also sketch abstract shapes such as circles or
squares, or frame images within them. Activate the
”Shapes” button to draw a quadrangle or a circle. By double
clicking on a shape, a dialogue opens allowing you to choose
the width and colour of the shape’s borders, as well as be-
ing able to choose whether the shape should be filled in
with a particular colour.
18
Text and Extras
Each text in a text field can be moved and edited just like
selected image objects. The main difference however is that
when a text field’s size is altered, the size of the text itself
does not change. The size of the text can only be altered in
the text dialogue, which can be opened with a double click.
By altering the size of a text field or by adding more text,
not all of the text may be visible. In this case, either the text
field must be enlarged or the size of the font must be re-
duced.
Text
Each text is written or formatted in a separate text dialogue
that is opened by double clicking on an existing text field.
It is also opened automatically when a new text field is called
up via the ”Text” button.
Font: You can select the type of lettering from a choice of
TrueType fonts that are installed on the computer (exclud-
ing Postscript fonts).
Size: Here, the size of the letters can be selected.
Style: Here you can choose bold and/or italic.
Fill: Here you can select a colour for the text. When it is
not selected, the letters are not visible but can be bordered
or framed with the following options.
19
Text and Extras
Frame: A frame can be placed around the letters. The
frame’s colour and width can be selected.
Positioning: The text as a whole can be positioned on the
paper with margin left, margin right, or centred.
Text Rotation
MAGIX cover center offers a special function to rotate the
text in order to write on the tiny backsite of a CD jewel
case. To rotate the text click on the text field with the right
mouse button and select the entry ”Rotation”.
Extras
Playlists are a special form of text field that can be called up
from the playlist button. They are small tables for the song
titles usually found on the inside flap or on the back of
CDs.
The text editing of playlists, as with other text fields, is per-
formed in the text dialogue.
With the functions ”Add Playlist” and ”Edit TOC”, track
information from the MAGIX CD burnR deLuxe is evalu-
ated in order to create a CD text. ”TOC” is an abbreviation
of ”Table of Contents” (referring to the projects in MAGIX
CD burnR deLuxe).
20
Buttons
Scan Image
Scan image: This function can be utilised when a conven-
tional scanner with a TWAIN 32 drive is available.
Select source: Allows you to select one of several scan-
ners, or a scanner without TWAIN compatibility.
Insert Graphic
Opens the search function for your own image files that
can then be used as CD cover elements. Listed in a selec-
tion window.
Insert: Text
Opens the text dialogue (see above ”Text”).
Insert: Cliparts
This button activate the integrated image files (see above –
”Images and Graphics”).
Insert: Geometr. Form
Here you can choose the forms you would like to ”draw”,
such as ”circle” or ”square”.
Insert: Extras
Edit playlist: This function opens the table containing
track details. In the ”Edit TOC” editor, all entries can be
moved, edited or deleted.
Add playlist: Adds a table with the main program’s cur-
rent CD/DVD titles to the printing project.
Print
Before printing, a print dialogue opens where you can for-
mat the page layout (panel format/landscape format). Use
the “calibrate” function to adjust the page and click “O.K.”
The Print Preview displays everything that will eventually
be printed, cutting out anything in the surrounding area
from view. It is recommended to use this function prior to
printing.
