Section 1

Introduction

GENERAL

This document is a Command Line Interface (CLI) and application guide for the MX408e. This

document provides application examples and detailed information about all commands that

are available through the MX408e.

DESCRIPTION

Figure 1-1 and Figure 1-2 illustrates the front and rear panels of the MX408e.

The MX408e transports DS1 or E1 circuits over Ethernet, allowing TDM delivery over Ethernet

networks. DS1/E1 or fractional DS1/E1 circuits are transported using Pseudowire emulation

Edge-to-Edge (PWE3), which is a tunneling protocol. The MX408e supports the following

protocols:

• Structure-Agnostic TDM over Packet (SAToP) using UDP/IP. DS1/E1 circuits are

transported end-to-end. SAToP protocol is standards-based per RFC4553.

• Structure-Aware TDM Circuit Emulation Service over Packet Switched Network (CESoPSN)

using UDP/IP. NxDS0 circuits are transported as defined in RFC 5086.

The MX408e recovers DS1/E1 timing using the following methods:

• Differential Timing Recovery uses a common reference clock at both ends. The DS1 timing

is reconstructed using RTP timestamps from the common reference. The reference clock

can be provided by a DS1/E1 signal or by the Network Ethernet signal.

• Adaptive Timing Recovery uses a reference clock at one end and re-creates a reference clock

at the other end using timing packets. RTP timestamps are then used to reconstruct the

DS1 timing as in the Differential Timing mode.

FEATURES

The major features of the MX408e are as follows:

• 19-inch rack mounting, one rack unit high

• Front panel data connections

• Eight RJ-48 short-haul, intrabuilding DSX-1/E1 connections

• Ethernet switch with four RJ-45 Ethernet client ports

• One RJ-45 network Ethernet port

• One SFP socket for network 1000Base-X interface

• RS-232 DB-9 Craft interface for access to provisioning, status, and test information via a

Command Line Interface (CLI)

• Management via Telnet over Ethernet connections or VT100 through local RS232 DB-9

Craft port

• Management via a web-based GUI over Ethernet Connections

• Wire-wrap pins for external alarm inputs

• Two independent power feeds with separate returns

• Accepts redundant ±60 to ±20 VDC inputs

• End-to-end extension of up to eight T1s/E1s over Ethernet

• Manual and remote initiated loopback modes

• Meets NEBS Level 3

ACCESSING THE COMMAND LINE INTERFACE

Access the management and provisioning features for the MX408e by CLI using a standard

RS-232 serial cable to connect to the DB-9 craft port located on the unit. The CLI can also be

accessed through Telnet over Ethernet connections.

To establish CLI communication with the MX408e through the craft port, complete the

following steps:

1. Connect to the craft interface using a VT100 terminal or PC with VT100 emulation soft-

ware configured with the following parameters:

•Any baud rate

• 8 data bits

• No parity

•1 stop bit

• No flow control

2. Once connected, press ENTER several times to access the CLI.

The MX408e can also be accessed by Telnet through an Ethernet interface. The defaults for

the 10/100 port (Ethernet) are as follows:

• IP Address: 192.168.100.1

• Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0

• Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

ACCESSING THE WEB-BASED GUI

The GUI lets you access the management and provisioning features for the MX408e and

provides online guidance and explanations for each setting. Access the web-based GUI from

any web browser on your network by following these steps:

1. Connect the MX408e to your PC using any of the Ethernet ports on the front of the unit.

2. Set your PC to a fixed IP address of 192.168.100.2 and subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. If

you cannot change the PC’s IP address, you will need to change the unit’s IP address

using the CLI.

3. Enter the unit’s IP address in your browser address line. The default IP address is

192.168.100.1.

4. You will then be prompted for the username and password (the default settings are

“ADMIN” and “PASSWORD”).

5. The initial GUI screen appears.

Security Login

The MX408e is protected by a username and password. The default username is “ADMIN”,

and the default password is “PASSWORD.” Configure the usernames and passwords in the

Global Configuration mode.

Application Guidelines

INTRODUCTION

This section gives examples of common applications and describes how to configure various

options for different applications.

CONFIGURATION STARTING FROM DEFAULT

The MX408e comes from the factory with a default configuration. The factory default can be

restored at any time. Beginning with the logon prompt, set all settings to factory default and

reset the MX408e for the defaults to take effect. The factory default sets all 8 pseudowires for

SAToP mode and cross-connects each pseudowire to a DS1 port.

After the reload command, respond to the "Save System Configuration" question with no ("n")

and respond to the "You are about to reboot the system" question with yes ("y").

After the MX408e resets, log on and enter the Global Configuration Mode to begin configu-

ration of the unit.

Set the unit name that will be displayed at all prompts.

TIMING OPTIONS

A significant concern for the delivery of TDM circuits over a packet switched network via

pseudowires is the maintenance of the T1/E1 clocks. This section explains the different

timing options for the MX408e and how these relate to the T1/E1 clocks.

For T1/E1 circuits that are transported as full T1/E1s with structure-agnostic pseudowires

(SAToP), the T1/E1 clock will be transferred across the pseudowire. This is accomplished

using a common reference clock at both ends of the circuit and RTP timestamps in the

pseudowire packets to reconstruct the timing for each of the T1/E1 signals. As shown in Fig

ure 2-1, the T1/E1 clock (clk 1) is measured using the common reference clock (clk 2) at

MX408e #1. This measurement is transferred in the pseudowire packet via RTP timestamps.

The T1/E1 clock (clk1') is generated using this measurement and the common reference clock

(clk3) at MX408e #2. Each T1/E1 circuit transported via SAToP pseudowires can be asyn

chronous to each other and asynchronous to the reference clock (see Figure 2-1).

For T1/E1 circuits that are transported as NxDS0 circuits with structure-aware pseudowires

(CESoPSN), the T1/E1 clock must be traceable to the reference clock. The reference clock will

be used to transmit these T1/E1 signals out of the MX408e.

The reference clock (or timing source) for a MX408e can be:

1. A T1 or E1 signal used for synchronization

2. The clock recovered from the Network Ethernet signal

3. The MX408e's free running local oscillator

4. A reference clock reconstructed via packet timing
