It could also be mounted on the ceiling next to the
skylight, looking down at the flo o r.
A skylight may pro d u c e 5000 fo o tca n d les or more. If the
sensor is mounted so that it looks up into the skylight, the
daylight will exceed the maximum OFF setpoint of 1275fc
which is too low for this orientation.

DESCRIPTION
The Watt Stopper LS-101 is an interior photosensor that
a u to m a t i c a l l y turns a zone of lights ON and OFF based on
daylight levels. It is a low vo l t age dev i c e intended to
signal a power pack or relay panel.
The LS-101 is designed
to re q u i re minimal
a d j u s tment at sta r t u p .
For more adva n ce d
a p p l i cations, an
o n b o a rd display and
t w o pushbuttons allow
for adjustments, if
needed. The display is
hidden under a re m ova b le
cove r. To ass i st with adjust m e n t ,
the LS-101 displays the current light
level re a d i n g .
Figure 2: Cover removed
The LS-101 is designed to be either ceiling- or wall-
m o u n t ed. It has a wide range light sensor ca p a b l e of
measuring from 1 to 1400 fo o tca n d le s .
SELECTING A LOCATION
The LS-101 co n t rols lights in areas that re c e i ve enough
daylight so that the electric lights can be re d u c ed or
s w i tched OFF. It is important to select a lo cation for the
L S -101 where the daylight is re p r e s e n t a t i ve of the
daylight throughout the co n t ro l l ed zone. Note the path of
s h a d o ws. Daylighting co n t rol will be pro b lematic if part of
a co n t r o l led zone is in shadows while another part has
p lentiful daylight.
When the primary source of daylight is a window
(sidelighting), the LS-101 is typica l ly ceiling mounte d
within the daylit zone which ex t ends 12 feet or le ss in
f rom the window. A good lo c ation is often between the
w i n d ow and the first row of x t u res. Figure 3 shows a
t y p i c al mounting lo c ation for a sidelit applica t i o n .
Closed Loop or Open Loop
The LS-101 can be used as a closed loop dev i c e or as an open
loop dev i c e. When the LS-101 can view both daylight and light
f rom the co n t ro l led electric lights, it is working as a clo s e d
loop dev i c e. When the LS-101 can only see daylight, it is
working as an open loop dev i ce.
In both cases, having adequate separation of the ON and OFF
setpoints is important. When working in closed loop mode, it
is critical to have enough separation between the ON and OFF
settings (known as deadband) to co m p e n s a te for the re d u c t i o n
of the co n t r o l led lights. If not, when the co n t r o l l ed lights
s w i t ch OFF, the light level will fall below the ON setpoint and
the lights switch back ON.
OPERATION
The LS-101 fe a t u res adjusta b l e ON and OFF setpoints, OFF
time delay as well as seve ral fe a t u res to simplify adjust m e n t .
For basic operation, these three para m e t e rs are all that may
need to be adjuste d .
W h i le the ON and OFF setpoints are independently adjusta b l e ,
the LS-101 fe a t u r es a built-in minimum deadband. There f o re ,
these two setpoints are always auto m a t i ca l l y separa ted by at
le a s t a minimum amount of deadband.
When the sensed light level drops below the ON setpoint fo r
20 seconds, the output signal switches ON. In the LS-1 0 1 ’s
d e f ault operation, this means that the LS-101 provides 24 VDC
on the output (blue wire) when the lights should be ON.
H o weve r, it is also poss i b le to invert the output sta te. (Ple a s e
see “Invert output for further ex p l a n a t i o n . )
A d j u s ting the ON setpoint also auto m a t i ca l l y adjusts the OFF
setpoint to maintain the pro g r ammed deadband. Once the ON
setpoint is changed, you can further adjust the OFF setpoint.
In applications where the LS-101 sees the lighting from the
co n t r o l led x t u res, it is important to have the ON and OFF
setpoint separa t ed by a deadband of at le a st as much as the
light provided by the co n t ro l l ed x t u re.
Test Mode
The Te st mode te m p o ra r i l y shortens all of the time delays so
that the light level switching functions can be quickly te ste d .
Te st mode is invo ked in the installation pro c e s s in two ways.
A f ter either an ON or OFF setpoint has been changed, the
L S-101 remains in Te s t mode for one minute. The LED
blinks ON and OFF ra p i d l y to indica te Te s t mode. During
this minute, te st the LS-101 operation by either blo c k i n g
the light reaching the sensor or by shining a bright light
i n to the sensor. At the end of the minute, the normal time
delays are re i n sta te d .
Te st mode can be activa t ed for a longer period through a
menu item on the display. From the Te s t mode menu, yo u
can turn ON Te st mode for 30 minutes. Once turned ON, it
can also be turned OFF from the Te s t mode menu.
Temporary Override
When using the display and buttons, it is poss i b l e to
te m p o ra r i l y override the output ON or OFF from the display
and onboard buttons. This fe a t u r e is useful for observing that
the co r rect lights are being co n t ro l led and all other
components in the system are functioning co r re c t l y. (Ple a s e
see the Display functions for further ex p l a n a t i o n . )
Invert output
This fe a t u r e is used to co n t r ol dev i ces that re q u i r e a +24 VDC
signal when the lights should be turned OFF and 0 VDC when
the lights should be turned ON. The normal operation of the
L S-101 provides a +24 VDC signal when the lights should be
turned ON, but using this fe a t u re, the operation can be
reve rsed from the Adjustment Menu Setup display to satisfy
the applica t i o n .
Wall switch override
The LS-101 provides a connection for an optional low vo l t a g e ,
n o r m a l l y-open, momenta r y - c o n t act wall switch override.
This switch can be used to te m p o ra r i ly turn the lights ON
when the LS-101 has switched them OFF because the light
level is above the setpoint. When the wall switch is pre s s e d ,
the lights switch ON, and automatic light level co n t rol is
te m p o ra r i l y suspended for one hour. If during this period the
wall switch is pre s sed again, the override is ca n ce l ed and the
lights are re sto r ed to automatic co n t r o l .
The wall switch re q u i res a two wire momentary switch. See
F i g u re 10 for more info r m a t i o n .
Hold ON while occupied
This is an optional fe a t u r e that prohibits high light levels fro m
turning OFF the co n t r o l led light as long as the space re m a i n s
o c cupied. This fe a t u re allows energy savings from daylighting
co n t r ol while limiting impact on occupants who might be
d i s t r a c ted or annoyed if the lights switch OFF while they are in
the space .
This fe a t u r e re q u i res that the signal wire from an occ u p a n c y
sensor be co n n e c ted to the LS-101. See Figure 9.
The LS-101 will not switch OFF while an occupancy signal (+24
VDC) is present on the white wire.
This function is enabled or disabled from the display’s
A d j u s tment Menu SETUP submenu. It allows the occ u p a n c y
signal to be co n n e c t ed to the LS-101 at installation but late r
be ignored without having to disconnect it.
INSTALLATION
The LS-101 is designed to
be mounted in either of two
ways.
For suspended ceiling tile ,
a threaded nipple with a
lock nut is attached to the
L S-101. See Figure 5.
For sheetrock or other solid
s u r f a c es, first re m o ve the thre a d e d
n i p p l e by squeezing it near the
base of the LS-101. Then use the
t wo screw holes lo ca t ed under the
cove r. Screws are not prov i d e d .

For measuring light, the ro t ation of the light sensor is not
c r i t i c al, but it may simplify setup and adjustment. Rota te the
L S -101 so you can approach it from the side with the status LED.
In a typical ceiling application, ro t a t e the LS-101 so that the light
sensor is neare s t the window. In a wall mount application, it
should be ro t a t ed so that the light sensor is near the top.

WIRING
I M P O R TA N T : All low vo l t age wiring must be isolated from any
line vo l tage wiring. Low vo l t age wiring should not be insta l le d
within the same conduit as line vo l tage wiring.
The unit has 5 co lo r - c oded wires. Connect to wires with
insulation ra ted for the application. Normally re c ommended wire
is 18 AWG 3 or 4 co n d u c tor ca b l e with 300 Volt insulation. When
the optional wall switch override is used, a separa t e 18 AWG 2
co n d u c tor with 300 volt insulation is re co m m e n d e d .
Figure 8: Basic LS-101 connections
Two connections are optional. Cap unused wires. See Opera t i o n
for more info r m a t i o n .

Using with the BZ-100 for Hold OFF while unoccupied
In this co n fig u ration, the occupancy sensor ove r r u l es the
L S-1 0 1 ’s light level input so that even when the light sensor
sends a low light level signal to turn the lights ON, if the area is
not occupied, the lights stay OFF.
This application re q u i r es the use of a BZ-100 power pack and
t wo adjustments need to be made in the Setup Submenu (see

F i g u re 11 shows the wiring for this application. Notice that
t h e re is an optional LVS-1 Switch included. In this co n fig u ra t i o n
the occupant may te m p o ra r i ly override the LS-101 signal to
turn lights ON even when light levels are high. Pre ssing the LV S
turns the lights ON and automatic light level will suspend fo r
one hour. If during this period the wall switch is pre s sed again,
the override is ca n ce l ed and the lights return to auto m a t i c
co n t r o l .

indica tes the pro d u c t ’s internal ve rsion number. This
display also occ u rs if the LS-101 is reset to fa c t ory defa u l t s .
The display goes to sleep when there is no activity. If no
b u t tons are pre s sed for 10 minutes, then the display goes
blank. Pre s sing either button wakes up the display.
Adjustment Menu
The menu is arranged so that the most common adjust m e n t s
a r e re a d i l y acce s s i b le. For many applications, only the ON
Setpoint needs to be adjusted. For more adva n c e d
a p p l i c ations, the SETUP menu offe rs more options.
T h e re are also two special indica t o rs that may appear above
the normal chara c t e rs in the display: MEM and OV R.
M E M s h o ws which value is pro g r ammed into the LS-1 0 1 .
When stepping through the ava i l a b le choices, MEM appears
for the curre n t l y pro g r ammed choice. The MEM indica to r

Fo o t ca n d les (
F C
)
This is normally the first screen visible when any button is
p r e ssed. It displays the current light sensor reading, which
u p d a t es once a seco n d .
Any object that changes the amount of light that re flects into
the light sensor will change the readings. Whenever poss i b le ,
lean away or back down from the LS-101 to see if the light
level readings increase. Remove objects from the sensor’s
field of view if they are not normally in the area.
C o n t rol (
C T R L

This screen displays the lo g i c al sta te of the output to the
p ower pack, either ON or OFF. It also allows te m p o ra r y
override of the output. Pre s s Select to to g g le the output to its
o p p o s i t e sta t e. If the output was ON, one pre s s turns it OFF
and the OV R i n d i ca tor appears. The status indica tor LED also
starts to flash slow ly. Pre s s Select again to turn the output ON
again while OV R i n d i c a tor remains lit. The output re m a i n s
overridden ON or OFF until this screen is ex i ted by pre s s i n g
the Menu button. Upon exiting, the LS-101 auto m a t i ca l l y
resumes automatic co n t r ol, the OVR indica tor turns OFF and
the LED stops its slow fla s h .
If the display is left on this screen while the output is
overridden, the override will timeout in 10 minutes and the
L S-101 will return to automatic co n t r ol.
Observing the Fo o tca n d l es (
FC
) display while in ove r r i d e : I f
you want to observe the FC reading at the sensor while the
lights are either ON or OFF, you can latch the override sta te ,
then maneuver the display back to the FC display to see how
the lights ON or lights OFF sta tes affect the light level co m i n g
i n to the sensor. To latch the output in an override sta te :
1 . A c ce ss the CTRL menu ite m .
2 . P r e ss SELECT to override the output, then pre s s and hold
S E L E C T until the M E M i n d i ca t or appears in the display.

10 minute s .
ON Setpoint (
O N
)
When the light level drops below this setpoint for 20 seco n d s ,
the lights turn ON. Set this value for the lowe st level that is
a c ce p ta b l e during times when the space is occ u p i e d .
The ON setpoint range is from 1 to 850 fo o t ca n d les.
The default value is 7.5 fo o tca n d l e s .
Changing either the ON or OFF setpoint initiates Te st mode
for one minute. During this one minute period, the time delays
a r e te m p o ra r i l y made very short. Te st mode is indica ted by the
ra p i d ly flashing status indica t o r.
OFF Setpoint (
O F F
)
When the light level exceeds the OFF setpoint for the length of
the Time Delay, the lights turn OFF.
N o te that the OFF setpoint updates when the ON setpoint has
been changed. The OFF Setpoint always maintains a
deadband of 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% above the ON Setpoint.
Any change in the ON setpoint causes the OFF setpoint to
re c a lc u l a te using the same perce n tage of deadband as
s e l e c t ed for the previous va l u e .
Time Delay (
T I M E
)
This adjustment determines how long the light level must
remain above the OFF setpoint befo re the lights turn OFF.
The ava i l a b l e choices are 3 minutes, 10 minutes, 20 minute s
and 30 minutes. The default value is 10 minute s .
Setup Submenu (
S E T U P
)

options. Genera l ly, these options are used in more adva n ce d
a p p l i c ations. Pre s s the Select button to acce s s the submenu.
P r e ss the Menu button to bypass the Setup submenu and
return to the initial fo o tca n d l e screen.
Te s t Mode (
T E S T
)
Te st Mode te m p o ra r i l y bypasses the normal time delays to
fa c i l i ta t e easy te sting of the LS-101 light level settings. Afte r
30 minutes, Te s t Mode ends and the normal time delays are
re sto r e d .
P r e ssing the Select button in this menu initiates or ca n ce l s
Te st Mode.
When Te s t Mode is active, the LED status indica tor a s h e s
ra p i d ly.
O c cupancy Hold ON (
O C C
)
This adjustment option determines whether the occ u p a n c y
sensor input is used to delay turning OFF or if the input signal
is ignore d .
The fa c t ory default is Disabled ( ). If the Occ u p a n c y
function is to be used then it must be enabled (
OCC ENA
) fro m
this scre e n .
Output (
O U T
)
This adjustment option allows the sta t e of the output to be
reve rsed. The choices are either normal (NORM) or inve r t e d
( I N V ) .
When the LS-101 is set to Normal, the output signal is 0 VDC
