ESD impact
Electrostatic discharge
Purpose
This topic explains the concept of Electrostatic Discharge, denoted as ESD, the conditions
in which it could occur, its possible impacts on equipment and personnel, and provides
suggestions and instructions to minimize the likelihood of ESD. Emergency measures that
need to employed in case of damage to equipment, software, or the workforce are also
provided in this topic.
Definition
An electrostatic discharge, commonly denoted as ESD, is the transfer of an electrostatic
charge from one body to another owing to a variation in potential.
General
Local atmospheric conditions, varying equipment usage, variable power sources, and
other such factors make it difficult to maintain a universal list of instructions to counter
ESD. In certain situations, location-specific or equipment-specific solutions may be
required to reduce the risk of ESD. However, make sure that the only equipment used has
been prescribed in the product documentation or has been approved by the EMEA
coordinator. In case of variations in the procedure to counter ESD, the local EMEA
coordinator shall develop the necessary procedures to ensure compliance with the intent
of this document and its references.
Important! Always comply with local ESD safety requirements. The grounding
system (typically equipment-ground) must be common to all ESD-control facilities
(table tops, floor mats and wrist straps).
Electrostatic induction
Due to friction between two materials, at least one of which is non-conductive, a potential
charge is generated, which is termed as electrostatic induction.
The voltage level and the polarity depends on the following:
The relative position of these two materials in the tribo-electric list. Refer to
“Tribo-electric series” (p. 1-3).
The frictional heat (speed and frictional force).
The relative environmental humidity (RH). As the RH increases, the generated charge
decreases, as seen from the reducing values of Electrostatic Voltage for the same
event as the Relative Humidity goes on increasing.

Important! The human body can develop a significant electrostatic charge by simple
movements.
Table 1-2, “Typical electrostatic voltages” (p. 1-4) provides the
magnitude of charge buildup that can result from simple operations (for example,
walking, sitting, unpacking, and so on).
ESD: negative impacts
ESD can damage or destroy voltage sensitive components. Device failure due to ESD
may not always occur immediately, and the component may weaken and alter
progressively for an extended period of time before it finally breaks down.
