If you are uncomfortable working with electrical appliances, unable to
follow these guidelines, or do not have the necessary equipment, con-
sult a qualified electrician.
1. WITH THE POWER OFF, remove the old heater and wall can,
leaving existing wiring intact. Note: Make sure there is enough
wire to reach through the new wall can knockout and extend at
least 6 inches into the wall can interior. (Never use the wall stud
cavity as a place to splice wires without an approved junction box).
2. Position adapter plate on wall. Line up holes in adapter plate with a
wall stud, covering the old opening (See Figure A or B).
3. Install adapter plate with screws (not provided). Do not use nails.
Make sure at least one side of the adapter plate – upper and lower
– is screwed to a wall stud. The screws should be sufficiently
snug, but avoid over tightening. If you are installing a narrow
adapter plate (SAMA or SAMW) or installing the adapter plate
on a wall with studs that are not on 16 inch centers, you may
use 2 wall anchors.
4. Remove a knockout from the heater wall can closest to the supply
wires. Install an approved strain relief connector (not included) in
the knockout.
5. Pull at least 6 inches of the house wiring through the strain relief
connector into the wall can. Tighten the strain relief connector.
6. Insert the wall can into the hole and mount the wall can to the wall
stud with screws through the side of the wall can.
7. Attach the wall can to the adapter plate with the screws provided
through the top and bottom lips of the wall can. Two screws are
required to provide proper grounding of the adapter plate.
8. Connect the grounding wire in the house supply wire to the ground
wire or screw in the wall can.
9. Install the heater according to the heater instructions.
10. Adapter plate may be painted with 100% acrylic latex to match
décor.
