Chapter 1. About the Lenovo USB Smartcard Keyboard
The Lenovo
®
USB Smartcard Keyboard is a full-sized keyboard equipped with a smart card reader and
the ThinkVantage
®
button to add security to your computer and provide convenience for your computing
needs.
The keyboard with the smart card reader enables authorized users’ single logon to the computer and
prevent unauthorized access to the network of an organization. Typically, the user-access verification of
the keyboard secures the environment for transactions performed on both public and private networks.
The ThinkVantage button on the keyboard provides a quick access to the ThinkVantage Productivity
Center program, the Lenovo Care
SM
program, or the Windows
®
System Information window.
In addition to this user guide, the option package contains:

This section provides general descriptions about main features of the keyboard.

The ThinkVantage button
Whenever you have a question about your computer or want to view Lenovo Web sites, press the
ThinkVantage button to open the ThinkVantage Productivity Center or the Lenovo Care program. Both
the ThinkVantage Productivity Center and Lenovo Care programs provide comprehensive help and
information for your computer.

Note: The ThinkVantage Productivity Center or the Lenovo Care comes with your computer. If you do
not have either of them installed on your computer, pressing the ThinkVantage button will open
the Windows System Information window.
Attention: Make sure you install the Lenovo USB Smartcard Keyboard hotkey driver before using the
ThinkVantage button.
The NumLk or NmLk LED
When the NumLk LED (light-emitting diode) is on, the numeric keypad on the keyboard is enabled.
When the LED is off, the cursor control on the numeric keypad is disabled. Press the NumLk or NmLk
key to switch back and forth between these modes.
The Caps Lock or CapsLk LED
When the Caps Lock LED is on, the Caps Lock mode is enabled. In this mode, you can type all
alphabetic characters (A-Z) in upper case text without pressing the Shift key. When the LED is off, the
Caps Lock mode is disabled. To enable or disable the Caps Lock mode, press the Caps Lock or CapsLk
key.
The Scroll Lock or ScrLk LED
When the ScrLk LED is on, the ScrLk mode is enabled. The arrow keys can be used as screen-scroll
function keys and the cursor cannot be moved with the arrow keys. Not all application programs support
this function. When the Scroll Lock LED is off, the arrow keys can be used for cursor movement, not as
screen-scroll function keys. Press the Scroll Lock or ScrLk key to switch back and forth between these
modes.
The smart card indicator
The smart card indicator is a dual-color LED, which indicates the working status of the smart card reader
in green and amber.
Note: For more descriptions about the smart card indicator status, see Table 1 on page 9.
The smart card reader
The smart card reader is a compact, lightweight, high-performance device that can provide computer
security and network security, for example, in banking and telecommunication environment. It supports
most memory and microprocessor cards currently on the market.
The smart card reader supports:
v Reading from and writing to all memory and microprocessor smart cards (T=0, T=1) that conform to
ISO 7816-1, 2, 3, 4 standards
Note:
Lenovo does not provide a smart card with this option.
v Secure PIN (personal identification number) entry mode (PIN authentication without transmitting the
PIN to the host system)
v User authentication through third-party applications
v ThinkVantage Client Security Solution

refer to the ThinkVantage Client Security Solution online help.

Note: See Appendix A, “Product specifications,” on page 11 for detailed specifications about the smart
card reader.
The cable slot
The cable slot provides a convenient way to change the location where the cable leaves the keyboard. You
can route the keyboard cable into the left or right slot to reduce cable clutter and optimize desk space.
The tilt feet
There are three tilt feet positions for setting the keyboard to a comfortable degree. You can set the
keyboard to 4 degree, 6 degree or 9 degree according to your preference.
Hardware and software requirements
To use this option, your computer must have an available USB port and one of the following operating
systems installed:
v Microsoft

v Microsoft Window Vista

v Microsoft Window Vista 64-bit

Chapter 2. Installation
This chapter provides instructions on installing the Lenovo USB Smartcard Keyboard to your computer.
Installing the drivers
The keyboard can be used on computers that have a Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Vista
operating system installed. Before using the keyboard, install the following drivers to your computer:
v Lenovo USB Smartcard Keyboard hotkey driver
v Lenovo keyboard smart card reader driver

For the latest version of the drivers and the documentation, go to:

To install the hotkey driver for the Microsoft Windows XP or the Microsoft Windows Vista, do the
following:
1. Insert the Software and User Guide CD that comes with your option into the CD or DVD drive. The
Installation window displays automatically.
Note:
If it is the first time that you run this CD, a warning from Internet Explorer about malicious
scripts will display. Click OK to continue the installation.
2. Select a language from the Language drop-down list box and click Go.
3. Click Software on the left pane of the window. The drivers available on the CD will display.
4. Click Lenovo USB Smartcard Keyboard hotkey driver. The InstallShield Wizard window opens.
5. Click Next and follow the instructions on the screen to install the driver.
6. Click Finish.
Note: To continue to install the smart card reader driver, go back to the Home window and click
Lenovo keyboard smart card reader driver.
7. Restart your computer if necessary.
To
install the smart card reader driver for the Microsoft Windows XP or the Microsoft Windows Vista, do
the following:
1. Insert the Software and User Guide CD that comes with your option into the CD or DVD drive. The
Installation window displays automatically.
2. Select a language from the Language drop-down list box and click Go.
3. Click Software on the left pane of the window. The drivers available on the CD will display.

4. Click Lenovo keyboard smart card reader driver. The InstallShield Wizard window opens.
5. Click Next and follow the instructions on the screen to install the driver.
6. Click Finish.
7. Restart your computer if necessary.
Note:
For the Microsoft Windows XP users, it is recommended to install the smart card reader driver for
using the smart card reader of the keyboard. For the Microsoft Window Vista users, it is also
recommended to install the smart card reader driver for using other specific functions including
the secure PIN entry.
Installing the keyboard
This section provides instructions on how to install the Lenovo USB Smartcard Keyboard to your
computer after you install the drivers.

To install the keyboard to your computer, do the following:
1. Adjust the tilt feet to set the keyboard near your computer to your preference.
2. Route the keyboard cable into the right or left cable slot according to your preference.
3. Connect the keyboard cable to the USB port on your computer. The operating system will identify the
keyboard and the smart card reader, and the keyboard is ready for use.
Using the smart card reader
To use the smart card reader of the keyboard, do the following:
1. Insert a smart card into the smart card reader slot with the contact pad facing up, as shown:

For information on using your smart card, contact your smart card vendor.

2. The smart card indicator will be on in green for a while, and the smart card reader is ready to use.
Attention: Do not remove the smart card when the smart card reader is active, or this will result in
transmission errors and loss of data.
Uninstalling the drivers
This section provides instructions for uninstalling the hotkey driver and the smart card reader driver.
To uninstall the hotkey driver, do the following:
1. Depending on your Start menu mode, click Start Control Panel or Start Settings Control Panel.
2. For the Windows XP, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
For the Windows Vista, double-click Programs and Features/Uninstall a program.
3. Select Lenovo USB Smartcard Keyboard Hotkey Driver.
4. For the Windows XP, click Change/Remove.
For the Microsoft Windows Vista, click Uninstall.
5. Restart your computer if necessary.
To
uninstall the smart card reader, do the following:
1. Depending on your Start menu mode, click Start Control Panel or Start Settings Control Panel.
2. For the Windows XP, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
For the Windows Vista, double-click Programs and Features/Uninstall a program.
3. Select Lenovo Keyboard Smartcard Reader.
4. For the Windows XP, click Change/Remove.
For the Microsoft Windows Vista, click Uninstall.
5. Restart your computer if necessary.

Chapter 3. Troubleshooting
The following information provides some troubleshooting hints and tips to assist you if you experience
any problems with your Lenovo USB Smartcard Keyboard option.
Problem: The smart card reader does not work properly.
Solution: Check if the Lenovo USB Smartcard Keyboard hotkey driver and the smart card reader driver
have been properly installed, and check the status of the smart card indicator according to the following
table.

Note: Contact your Lenovo service representative if the problem persists.
Problem: The ThinkVantage button does not work correctly. When I press the ThinkVantage button,
neither the ThinkVantage Productivity Center nor the Lenovo Care program opens.
Solution: Check if these programs have been installed on your computer. If neither of these programs is
installed, the Windows System Information window will display when you press the ThinkVantage
button.
Problem: I pressed a key once, but the computer responded as if I pressed it twice.
Solution: Check the keyboard Repeat delay or Repeat rate settings.
To change the Repeat delay or Repeat rate settings, do the following:
1. Depending on your Start menu mode, click Start Control Panel or Start Settings Control Panel.
2. Double-click Keyboard.
3. Click the Speed tab for Repeat delay or for Repeat rate.
4. Move the Repeat delay slider to Long or the Repeat rate slider to Slow.
5. Click OK.

Problem: The keyboard does not function properly.
Solution: Check if the keyboard cable is firmly connected to the USB port, or reconnect the keyboard
cable to another USB port on your computer.
To reconnect the keyboard cable to another USB port on the computer, do the following:
1. Unplug the keyboard cable from the USB port.
2. Insert the keyboard cable into another USB port on the computer.
3. The operating system will identify the keyboard and the smart card reader.
Note:
Contact your Lenovo service representative if the problem persists.

Product replacement assistance or exchange of defective components also is available during the
warranty period. In addition, if your option is installed in a Lenovo computer, you might be entitled to

alternative.
Telephone technical support
Installation and configuration support through the Customer Support Center will be available until 90
days after the option has been withdrawn from marketing. After that time, the support is cancelled, or
made available for a fee, at Lenovo’s discretion. Additional support is also available for a nominal fee.
Before contacting a Lenovo technical support representative, please have the following information
available: option name and number, proof of purchase, computer manufacturer, model, serial number and
manual, the exact wording of any error message, description of the problem, and the hardware and
software configuration information for your system.
