2. INTRODUCTION
TheT14-1hearingloopdriverrangehasbeendesignedashighqualitydigital,networkablesingle
loopoutputdrivers.Therangeincludesmodelsintendedforuseinrailorbusapplications.
Dependingonanumberoffactorsregardingtheinstallationoftheloopandtheset-upofthe
driver,theT14-1rangecanprovidecompliancewithIEC60118-4forappropriatelyspeciedloop
installations.
CompliancetorelevantStandards,reducedweightandheatgenerationhavebeenmajorfactorsin
thedesign,combinedwithoptimisedperformanceandthefreedomfromR.F.I.generation.
TheT14-1rangehasaClassDoutputstagewhichoersbetterthan60%increaseinenergy
eciencyoverprevioussolutions.TheproductsfeatureWAGOorHartingconnectorsanduse
remotecontrolandmonitoringviaabrowserbasedcontrolpanelusingstandardnetworkprotocols;
includingHTTP,Telnet,emailandSNMP.
Allunitsfeaturehighpoweroutputsplusamplevoltageheadroom,makingthemsuitableforany
rail,tramorbusapplication.
The T14-1 range also features dual-slope metal loss compensation that caters for a wide range of
metallossfrequencycharacteristics.
3. PHYSICAL INSTALLATION
TheT14-1hasbuilt-inmountingangesoneachside,withtwoM4clearholesoneachange.
Itmaybemountedusingscrewsoronstudswithnutsaccordingtoyourinstallationdesign.
SupportinginformationisavailablefromtheAmpetronicwebsitetoaidinstallationincluding:

Theunitmaybemountedinanyorientation(sideways,horizontalorinverted)onapanelwith
suitableload-bearingcapability.
Itisrecommendedthattheunitbemountedinsuchawaythat:

Safety Earth Reference forelectricalsafetyground.ALWAYSconnecttheM6earthstudto
thevehiclechassisorearthreferenceusingasuitablereliableconnectionmethod.Thisis
requiredforsafetyandEMCcompliance.
Note:intheHartingPowerandLoopconnectors,the‘earth’pinprovidedaspartoftheshellisnot
connected.UsetheM6EarthStudforelectricalsafetyearthconnection.
Power: Depending on the version of the product, use the appropriate
twopins:
24Vto36VDC(T14-1LW,T14-1LH):use“0V”and“+V(LO)”
72Vto110VDC(T14-1UW,T14-UH):use“0V”and“+V(HI)”
Onlytherelevant+Vpowerpinisconnectedineachunitversion–ifthe
other+Vpinisinadvertentlyconnected,nodamagewillbecausedbut
theunitwillnotbepowered.
IncludeMCBovercurrentprotectioninthesupplycircuitwithminimum
ratings as shown in section 12 of this document
Loop Output: Connect the two ends of the loop to the two pins of the
connector.
Audio Inputs: Twobalanced,transformerisolatedaudio
inputsareavailable.Eachaudioinputmaybeconnectedto
a choice of source signal levels, depending on the
application.
Connect each audio input source to 0V and one of 3V, 30V
or100Vline(NBthisisthe‘peak’leveloftheconnection).
Do not connect to more than one input level in each input.
Theinputsare‘highimpedance’relativetoatypicalspeakerloadimpedanceateachsignallevel.
ThismeansthattheT14-1willnotaddadditionalloadtothesignalsource(e.g.PAamplier).
Wherepossible,donotrouteaudioinputandloopoutputcablesclosetogetherandparallel.Itis
possiblethatsystemstabilitywouldbereduced.
Enable Inputs: Eachinputcanberemotelyenabledby5V
to24VDCconnectedbetweentherelevantenableinputand
enable‘common’.Thisfunctionalitycanbeenabled/disabledin
thewebbrowsercontrolinterface.

Status Output: An isolated relay contact is provided which
canbeconnectedtoamonitoringsystem.Therelaycontacts
are‘NO’:closedwhentheunitisoperatingnormally,andopen
when a fault is detected (including lack of power). The fault
conditionsindicatedbytherelay(andbyothermonitoring
protocols)arecongurableinthewebbrowsercontrol
interface.
Ethernet:TheEthernetinterfaceisa10/100Mbpsauto-sensingconnectiononaM12
D-coded4-pinfemaleconnector,asusedinindustrialEthernetnetworks.M12DtoRJ45
cablesareavailableifrequiredforeldprogrammingwhennotpartofanetwork.

5. LOOP REQUIREMENTS
Thedesignandinstallationofthehearingloopcableinstallationshouldbeundertakenaccordingto
specicdesigninstructionsandadviceprovidedbyAmpetronicforyourparticularproject.
Ingeneral,toachievecorrectoperation,thetotalloopcableandfeedconnectionresistanceshould
bebetween0.1Ωand0.9Ω(atDC).Iftheloopresistanceishigherthanthis,theT14-1willstill
operatebutmaynotdeliverthefullratedloopoutputcurrentintotheloop.Ingeneral,loopand
feedimpedance(at1.6KHz)shouldbelessthanthevoltagecapabilityofthedriverdividedbythe
targetcurrentrequiredtoachieveeldstrength.LoopimpedancesabovethismaycausetheCLIP
indicatortoilluminate.Seetroubleshootingsectionforadviceonhowtocorrectthisandgetyour
system.
Ifthetotalloopandfeedcableresistanceisoutsidetherange0.1Ωto10Ω(atDC),theError
LEDmayilluminateatstartupandtheloopdriveroutputmaybedisabledorde-rated.Loopand
feedimpedance(at1.6KHz)shouldbelessthanthevoltagecapabilityofthedriverdividedbythe
targetcurrentrequiredtoachieveeldstrength.HigherimpedancemaycausetheCLIPindicator
toilluminate.Seetroubleshootingsectionforadviceonhowtocorrectthisandgetyoursystem
working.
TheAmpetronicwebsiteandsupportteamprovidemoredetailsonloopandfeedcables.The
correct design and positioning of the actual loop is vital for satisfactory system performance and to
achieveasystemcompliantwithIEC60118-4(orlocalequivalent).IfindoubtconsultAmpetronic
for advice.

TheT14-1drivershaveadjustmentssetindecibels(dB).Asettingof0dBequatestomaximum
current or to maximum input gain. A value of less than 0dB will reduce the current or input gain
accordingly.ThissimpliesadjustingthedriveroutputtomeettheInternationalPerformance
Standard:e.g.Iftheloopmagneticeldstrengthismeasuredtobe2.7dBbelowtherequiredlevel
thenadding2.7dBtotheloopdriveroutputcurrentshouldbringthemagneticeldstrengthtothe
desired level to meet the Standard.
Youcanresetthedrivertodefaultvaluesbyuploadingacongurationlecontainingalldefault
values,e.g.fromaUSBmemorydevice(seebelow).
AfactoryresetcanalsobeperformedviaTelnet(seeUP1A205ProtocolGuide),howeverthiswill
setinputsto-80dBandcurrentto-20dB.Allothersettingswillbeasabove.
Control Interfaces
TheT14-1drivershaveawebbrowserinterfaceavailableviatheEthernetconnection.
CongurationuploadviaUSBisalsoavailable.
BASIC SETUP METHOD
a. As a minimum, connect safety ground, power, loop, and audio input signals (see
  above).Enableandstatusconnectionscanbeusedifdesired.
b. ConnectacomputertotheEthernetport(e.g.usinganM12toRJ45ethernetcable)as
  describedinSection9below.Logonusing‘audioadmin’or‘superadmin’.
c. Browsetothe‘Audio’tabofthewebsite.
d. Enablethe‘combi’testsignalusingthewebsiteinterface.Turnuptheloopoutput
  currentuntilthecorrectmagneticeldstrength(0dBre:400mAm-1)isobtainedinthe
  intendedareaofuse.Measurethemagneticeldstrengthusingamagneticeld
strength meter.
e. Enablethe‘pinknoise’testsignalusingthewebsiteinterface.Usethemagneticeld
strengthmetertomeasurethefrequencyresponseofthemagneticeld.Onthe 
  websiteadjusttheMetalLossControl(usingthedual-slopefeatureifnecessaryto
correctamorecomplexcurve),andrepeatthetestadjustinguntilthefrequency 
  responseis+/-3dBre:the1kHzvalueoverthe100Hzto5kHzrange.
f. Turnothetestsignalsandconnecttheintendedaudioinputsignals.
g. Apply the intended external input audio signal to the unit, and increase the input
  gainsliderforthatinputonthewebsiteuntilthecompressionbargraphshowsabout
6-12 dB compression (and the AGC LED is lit)

Audio Settings Tab
Input 1, 2 and 3 Settings:

Power Mode: Shows the current status of the driver, either Active, Sleep or
 Standby.
Heatsink Temperature: This is the temperature of the driver’s internal heatsink. If it
 exceeds75°Cthedrivercurrentwillbereduced.Ifitexceeds85°C
 thedriverwillbemuted.
Current Amps:  Thecurrentbeingdrawnfromthetransformer.Ifthisexceeds
 themaximumlimitforlongerthanadenedtimethenthedriver
 currentwillbereduced.Theamountofadditionalattenuationwill
 beshowninthederatesection.
Protection Derating: This is the amount of additional attenuation that is added to the
current setting when the transformer is overloaded or the heatsink
is too hot.
Loop Parameters: The measured value of the resistance and inductance of the loop
when the driver was last restarted or switched on.
Uptime: This shows the time since the driver was last restarted or
switched on.
Start Up Tests: This shows if the driver has stopped on a start-up test failure
 (thetestthatfailedwillbedisplayedinred)orifthestart-uptests
all passed (start-up tests completed).
Error(s): Either No Error if the driver is running correctly or a list of the error

Instability or high frequency noise
1. Itispossiblefortheloopcablestobegroundedunderfaultconditions,resultingininstability
whichmaysoundlikehighfrequencynoise,buzzorwhistling.Theresultsofthistypeoffault
areunpredictableandmayappearasanycombinationofthefrontpanelindicationerrors
2. Thisfaultiseasytodetermine.Simplyunplugtheloopcablesfromtheamplierandtestwitha
resistancemeterbetweeneitheroftheloopwiresandagoodearthpoint.Thereshouldbean
innitelyhigh(opencircuit)reading.Anyreadingindicatesafailureoftheloopcableinsulation
andyouwillneedtoeitherrepairorreplacetheloopcable.
3. Instabilitycanbecausedbyusingpoorqualitysignalcables,longunbalanced(2-wire)signal
runstotheinputs(includingelsewhereintheaudiosystem),orbyrunninginputcablesin
closeproximitywiththeloopwireoveranappreciabledistance(>5m).Loopampliersare
capableofdeliveringhighcurrentsataudiofrequencies.Iftheloopcablesareruncloseto
sensitivesignalcablesitmaybepossibletoinduceasignalbackintotheinputoftheamplier
causingfeedback.Cablerunsandloopwiresshouldbekeptwellapartfromeachother.To
avoid interference maintain a separation of at least 300mm.
4. InstabilitycancausethedrivertorunhotandmayresultintheSTATUSLEDashingREDand
thePROTECTLEDashingREDslowly.
Interference
1. Hum, Buzz or tones heard through a loop receiver: Backgroundmagneticeldsor
interferencemaybepresentinanylocationandareunlikelytobecausedbyortransmittedby
theloopsystem.Monitorthiswithaloopreceiver(suchasanILR3).Iftheinterferenceisstill
presentwiththeloopsystemswitchedo,thenyouneedtolocateandeliminatethesourceof
theinterferencebeforeswitchingtheloopsystembackon.
2. Interference to other systems (typically video or audio):Magneticeldscaninduce
currents into any low impedance electrical path or loop. Audio or video systems with multiple
earths may experience pick up of the loop signal. Check entire sound system for evidence of
loopsignal(mostobviouswithatestsignal),andtracesourceofpickup.
3. Jagged lines or “hum bars” on a video picture: Under certain circumstances, the loop
signalmayappearasinterferenceinavideosignal.Thiscouldbeduetorunningunbalanced
analoguevideocablesincloseproximitytotheloopcable,oranearthloopinthevideo
system.Separatetheloopcablesfromthevideocablesorresolvetheearthlooptoreducethe
eect.
