1. Hardware Installation
Before installation:
Touch the exposed metal casing on your computer’s power supply before you taking the
card from its antistatic package. This safely discharges any static electricity that may
have build up on your body.
Handle the card by the PCB edge only. Avoid touching the gold-plated bus or any
electronic components.
1. Turn off your computer and disconnect the power cord before
installing the host card.
2. Remove your computer’s cover. (Please refer to your computer
owners manual for instructions on removing the cover)
3. Locate an available PCI expansion slot and remove the bracket cover.
4. Insert the card carefully into a free PCI slot and make sure the gold-
plated bus is seated evenly in the PCI slot.
5. Fasten the PCI card’s mounting bracket securely to the rear computer
case by screw, it can avoid the card falling out accidentally when
plug in external cables.
6. Before replacing your computer’s cover, you must make sure no tools
or screws is left inside your computer case
7. Reconnect AC power cord and turn the power on, to complete the
driver software installation.

2. Driver Limitations
Current limitations of the driver are: Composite devices and Hi-Speed Isochronous Transfers
are currently not supported.
Please visit VIA web site (http://www.via.com.tw) to get the latest driver.
3. Driver Installation Windows VISTA
1. Start power to run Vista.
2. Windows will automatically detect the new device and will install the drivers needed.
3. To check whether the drivers were installed successfully please click right mouse button
on
My Computer
and select
Properties
then
Device Manager
. Double click on
Universal
Serial Bus controllers
and on display should be
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host
Controller
and
VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller
.
When double click on IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers on display should be
VIA OHCI
Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
.

4. Driver Installation Windows XP
NOTE: The drivers for this card are compressed on the included CD using “Winzip”.
1. Windows will automatically detect the new device and will install the drivers needed for
IEEE 1394. Under
Device Manager
you can check whether the driver was installed
successfully: Double click on
IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers
and on display should be
VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
.
2. Open the
Device Manager
and check if there is a
Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller
in
Other devices
.
3. Insert the Driver CD into the CD-ROM drive and execute the setup program by
double clicking on the “setup.exe” file. (the path is \USB\USB2.0-VIA)

4. Select “Install USB 2.0 Driver” and press “Next”.
5. Press “Continue Anyway”.
6. Press “Next”.
7. Press “Continue Anyway”.
9. Open “Device Manager” and check if your device works.
Note! If there is a yellow exclamation mark on “VIA USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller”
or “USB 2.0 Root Hub Device”, please remove this item from the “Device Manager” by
clicking the “Uninstall” button and click “Refresh” to re-install this driver again.

5. Driver Installation Windows 2000
NOTE: The drivers for this card are compressed on the included CD using “Winzip”.

clicking the “Uninstall” button and click “Refresh” to re-install this driver again.
6. Driver Installation Windows ME
1. Windows will automatically detect the new device and will install the drivers needed for
IEEE 1394. It will restart the computer and after rebooting, the hardware can be used.
Under Device Manager you can check whether the driver was installed successfully:
Double click on
IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers
and on display should be
VIA OHCI
Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
.
2. Open the
Device Manager
and check if there is a yellow exclamation mark on one of the
VIA Tech3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
item.

4. Select “Install USB 2.0 Driver” and press “Next”.

7.1 USB Driver Installation Windows 98 SE
1. Please make sure this PCI card has been installed on your system correctly.
Open the “Device Manager” and check if there is a “Universal Serial Bus (USB)
Controller” in “Other devices”.
2. Insert the Driver CD into the CD-ROM drive and execute the setup program by
double clicking on the “setup.exe” file. (the path is \USB\USB2.0-VIA).
3. Select “Install USB 2.0 Driver” and press “Next”.

7.2 IEEE 1394 Driver Installation Windows 98 SE
1. Windows 98 SE will detect the new hardware and
display the following message:
3. Insert your Windows 98 SE installation CD into
your CD-ROM drive. Select “CD-ROM drive”
and click “Next”.
2. Click “Next”. Windows will then begin
searching for a driver. The following message
will be displayed:
4. Windows will search the CD for the appropriate
driver and list what it finds. After it has identified
the appropriate driver, click “Next” to begin
installation of the driver.

5. When the dialogue box below appears onscreen, the installation is finished. Click
“Finish” to complete setup. You will be instructed to reboot your computer.
6. After rebooting, click on the Device Manager tab in System Properties, which you access
from the Windows Control Panel. You should see an entry for the driver you installed
under the 1394 Bus Controller item. If the driver is not listed, please go back to Step 1
and reinstall the PCI card.
The Windows 98 SE installation CD includes the VIA 1394 OHCI driver, so you do not need
an installation CD or diskette. After the installation has finished and the computer has
rebooted, you may connect IEEE 1394a/FireWire devices to it.
The first time you hot-plug an IEEE1394a device into one of the host adapter ports, you will
be asked to insert your Windows 98 SE installation CD. However, you won’t need to insert
the CD to add additional IEEE1394a devices; they should automatically appear in the Device
Manager after they are connected.
