aircraft is on the ground and the door is open. The Sierra Wireless
modem may be used at this time.

SierraWirelessmodemwhileincontrolofavehicle.Doingso
willdetractfromthedriveroroperatorʹscontrolandoperation

Onceinstalledandconfigured,theAirCardPC Cardcan
connecttotheCDMAnetworkautomatically.Youjustinsert
theAirCardPC Card,allowWatchertoautolaunchand
authenticateyouraccountonthenetwork,thenlaunchyour
Internetbrowser(whichyoucanalsoconfigureinWatcherto
launchautomatically)—you’reonline!
Alternatively,youcanmake
ahighspeeddataconnection
withoutrunningWatchersimplybylaunching whatever
applicationyouwanttouse(suchasyourwebbrowseror
emailapplication).Prerequisites:youmusthavepreviously

dependsonthenetworkconditions.

frequencybands.Asadualbandproduct,theAirCard
PC Cardoperatesontwoof
thesebands(seepage 31),
providingawidecoveragearea.
The AirCard PC Card drivers and
enabling software
Requiredtocontrol,monitor,andmanageyourwireless
connections,thisincludestheWatcherapplication.
TheAirCardPC CardcomeswithaCDcontainingthis

Eachserviceproviderhasitsownpricingoptions.Theremay
beflatrateaccounts,whichprovideyouamaximumnumber
ofminutesofnetworkusageforafixedmonthlyfee.There
maybeaccountsforwhichyouarechargedfornetworkusage
bytheminuteorbytheamountofdata
transmitted.
Youraccountmayincludeavarietyofotherservicessuchas
SMSmessaging.
EachAirCardPC Cardhasbeenprovisionedatthefactoryfor
usewithaparticularserviceprovider.ThissetstheAirCard
PC Cardtouse particularradiochannelsandenablesservices
specificforthatprovider.

youraccountiscalledactivation.
Activationinvolvesactionbytheserviceproviderandconfigu
rationoftheAirCardPC Card.

Thisistheworldwideinfrastructureprovidingtheradio
coveragethatallowsyoutostayconnected.Madeupofradio
towersandavarietyofnetworkswitches,routers,andservers,
thenetworkisaninterconnectionofmanyserviceproviders.
Note: Most service providers
have coverage maps on their
web sites.
ThereareCDMAnetworksthatoperateinthefrequencybands
supportedbytheAirCardPC CardthroughoutNorthAmerica
andpartsofLatinAmerica,Asia,andNewZealand.However,
eachserviceprovideroperatesanetworkthatcoversalimited
geographicalareawithintheoverallCDMAcoveragearea.
Note: The fee for service is
usually higher when you are
roaming (connecting to a
network other than the one
belonging to your service
provider).
Mostserviceprovidershaveroamingagreementswithother
serviceproviders,sothattheycanofferserviceoutsideof the
coverageareaoftheirownnetworks.Forexample,assuming
youliveinVancouverandtravelfrequentlytoSeattle,youcan
obtainanaccountwithaVancouverserviceproviderthathasa
roamingagreementwithaserviceproviderinSeattle.You
wouldthenhavelocalserviceinVancouver,androaming
serviceinSeattle.

Account activation and
configuration
Beforeyoucan beginusingtheAirCardPC Card,youmust:
1. InstalltheAirCardPC Cardenablingsoftwareand driver.
2. ActivateanaccountandconfiguretheAirCardPC Cardto
useyouraccount(unlesstheAirCardPC Cardhasbeen
preactivated).

TheAirCardPC Cardcomeswiththissoftware:
WatcherapplicationthatyouusetomanagetheAirCard
PC Cardandmonitor yourconnections
Thedriversoftwarethatprovidestheinterfacebetween
theAirCardPC CardandyourWindowsoperatingsystem
TheWatchersoftwaremustbeinstalledbeforeyouinsertthe
AirCardPC Cardforthe
firsttime.Detailedinstructionsare

Account activation and

TousetheAirCardPC Card,youmusthaveanaccountwitha
CDMAserviceprovider.Theprocessofsettingupanaccount
iscalledactivation.
IfyoupurchasedtheAirCardPC Carddirectlyfromaservice
provider,youmayalreadyhaveanaccount;yourAirCard
PC Cardmaybepreactivated.
Otherwise,run
WatcherandtheActivationWizard,which
guidesyouthroughtheactivationandconfigurationprocess.

theAirCardPC CardonanotebookPC.
Note: Do not insert the AirCard PC Card into your PC Card slot
before installing the software.
Thebasicstepsare:
1. InserttheAirCard 595installationCDintoyourCDROM
driveandinstallWatcher.
2. InserttheAirCardPC CardintothePC Cardslot (page 16)
toinstalltheAirCardPC Carddrivers.
3. IftheAirCardPC Cardhasnotbeenpreactivated,usethe
ActivationWizardtoconfiguretheA irCardPC Card(as
describedinActivation”onpage 18).
Beforeyoubegin theinstallationprocess,ensureyourPCis
runningasupportedoperatingsystemandmeetsthe
hardwarerequirementsdescribedbelow.

Start > Runandenter

2. FromtheCDstartupwindow,select
Install Watcher software
tolaunchtheInstallShield

Wizard.

Open With...windowappears,canceltheinstallation
(yourcomputerismissing somefilesrequiredforthe
installation).Searchfor
Instmsiw.exe(ifyou’rerunning
Windows2000)amongthedownloadsat
www.microsoft.com.Installthefileonyourcomputer,
thenreruntheAirCardPC Cardsoftwareinstallation.
4. Ifthe
Ikernel Application Errorwindowappears:
a)Canceltheinstallation.
b)Downloadthefile:

c)Installthefileonyourcomputer,thenrerunthesoftware
installation.
5. Usethe
NextandBackbuttonstonavigatethroughthe
wizardnotingthefollowing:

Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller“.
4. Ifadialogboxappearsnotifyingyouthatitissafeto
removethecard,click

5. UsetheejectortoremovetheAirCardPC Cardfromthe
slot.Pullthecardoutoftheslotbygrippingboth sidesof
