PSAX 1000 3-Port Line Interface Module Description and Specifications
Model 10N01
Purpose of This Document
This document identifies and describes the PSAX 1000 3-Port Line Interface
Module (LIM3–1) module and related safety information. It also includes proce-
dures for installation and removal of the module from the PSAX chassis and veri-
fication of the initial module startup, as well as information on obtaining trouble-
shooting assistance. Regulatory standards compliance is also described for the
module.
Identifying the Module
The PSAX 1000 LIM3–1 module is illustrated in Figure 1.
The PSAX 1000 LIM3–1 module has been tested and verified by Lucent Technol-
ogies to operate with the following PSAX system software versions:

Safety Information
When installing the LIM3–1 module, follow the safety guidelines provided in the
PacketStar
®
PSAX Multiservice Media Gateway Safety Guidelines, which accompanies
this product, to help prevent serious personal injury and damage to the module.
Please read all warnings and instructions supplied before beginning installation of
the module. In addition to the general safety information provided, you should
also refer to the PacketStar
®
PSAX 1000 Multiservice Media Gateway Installation Guide
for other important safety information and procedures.
Hardware Features Supported
The LIM3–1 module supports all hardware releases and features of the
PSAX 1000 system. For a list of N:1 traffic protection modules currently available,
refer to the PacketStar
®
PSAX Multiservice Media Gateways Product Information
Library CD-ROM that came with your system software.
Note: Within a given protection group, the same type of module must be
used for both the working modules and the group’s protection module.
Description of the Module
Functional Description
The LIM3–1 module provides three sets of BNC connectors for transmission and
reception of DS3, E3, and STS-1e traffic. It also provides loss of signal indicators
and relays to control traffic flow. The LIM3–1 module is only installed in one rear
panel slot (
LIM SLOT4) of the PSAX 1000 chassis on a one-for-one basis with the
PSAX protection modules installed in the front panel slots (
4 and 15). Relays on
the LIM3–1 module direct the traffic flow between the working module and the
protection module in normal operation and during a switchover.
The 1:1 Traffic Protection feature supports the configuration of one protection
pair for the PSAX 1000 system, with the group containing one working module,
one protection module of the same type for the group, and one LIM3–1 module
for both PSAX protection modules.
Under normal conditions, the working module in a protection group is in active
mode, exchanging traffic, and the protection module is in standby mode.
Hardware Specifications
The LIM3-1 module specifications are given in Table 1.

Pin Configurations
The LIM3–1 module includes three pairs of BNC connectors (TX/RX) for the
three ports used to interface the DS3/E3/STS-1e network with the protection
modules. Each connection has a 75-ohm unbalanced termination.
Note: The LIM3–1 module provides the physical connections for the N:1 traf-
fic protection modules; the protection modules do not have port con-
nections.
Module Placement
The LIM3–1 module is installed only in the rear panel slot labeled LIM Slot 4 of
the PSAX 1000 chassis. The associated PSAX protection modules are installed
only in the front panel slots labeled
4 (working module) and 15 (protection
module).
Installing the Module
Perform the following procedure to install the LIM3–1 module in the chassis.
Note: If the LIM blank faceplate is already installed in the rear-panel slot,

Verifying the Initial Startup
Verify that the status indicators (LOS) on the module are not illuminated during
normal traffic flow. If they are illuminated, the received input signal is not
detected. The same status indicators also appear on the PSAX protection mod-
ules.
Configuring the Module
The LIM3–1 module does not have any configurable components. However, the
installed PSAX protection modules are configurable, see the appropriate PSAX
module user guide for details.
Troubleshooting the Installation
If you experience a problem with the LIM3–1 module, refer to the Lucent Technol-
ogies Product Warranty Registration Information, which accompanied your shipment,
for instructions on obtaining support in your area.
Removing the Module
Perform the following procedure to remove the LIM3–1 module from the
PSAX 1000 chassis.
Begin
Removing the LIM3-1
1 Verify that the network connections are not passing traffic and disconnect
the cables from the module ports.
2 Loosen the two captive screws holding the module in place with a flathead
screwdriver.
3 Pull the module out of the slot.
4 Put the module in its ESD packaging, and place the module in its original
shipping box.
5 If another module is not being immediately inserted into the empty slot,
insert a LIM blank faceplate into the slot to prevent EMI and maintain proper
air flow inside the chassis.
