AD2081 Port Expander
The AD2081 Port Expander is used to increase the
number of RS232 ports available on the AD1024,
AD2150, AD168, and MegaPower 48 Matrix
Switcher/Controller systems. The AD2081 connects to a
single system RS232 port and provides four RS232 ports
for connection to external devices such as AD
keyboards, alarm interface units, and video loss detector
modules.

Mounting
The AD2081 is provided with a velcro strip for versatile
wall mounting. Four rubber feet are also provided for
optional desktop mounting.
Connections
All communications and power connections are made
on the unit’s front panel to facilitate cable management.
Communications connections are made using modular
cables with RJ-45 connectors. A single RJ-45 jack is
provided for connection to the system CPU. Four RJ-45
jacks labeled A through D are provided for connection
to external devices. The Power connection is made to
the two pin connector labeled “8-12V” on the Port
Expander front panel. A single cable and terminal block
is provided with the AD2081. Additional cables and
break-out boxes are provided with the other system
devices used in the hook up.
Data and Power Indicators
A green LED labeled “DATA” is provided on both the
front and rear panels of the AD2081. When the unit is
powered up by connection of the transformer to the AC
line, the LED illuminates and remains illuminated as long
as power is applied to the unit. During data
transmissions, both LEDs blink to indicate data flow.
Baud Rate Settings
There is a two position DIP switch on the AD2081 front
panel located between the power connector and the
CPU RJ-45 jack. The words “baud rate” appear above
the switch, and the numbers “1” and “2” appear below.
Each of the two switches can be set in either the Off or
On position. The table directly below indicates the
appropriate switch positions relative to system and
external device baud rate settings.

External Devices
The AD2081 Port Expander connects between a system
CPU and the following external devices:
AD Keyboards connections from the Port Expander to
any one of the AD keyboards must be routed through
an 8 pin wall-mount terminal block. The terminal block is
required to accommodate connection to an external
transformer that provides power to the keyboard. Up to
four AD keyboards can be connected to a single
AD2081 Port Expander.
AD2010DBVL Modules when using the AD1024
system, up to four AD2010DBVL video loss detector
modules can be connected to an AD2081 Port Expander.
Video loss detector modules cannot be connected with
any other type of system device on a Port Expander.
Port use must be set to video loss. Each AD2010DBVL
module is installed in an AD2010R bay with specific
camera assignments. For proper system operation, bay
camera assignments must correspond to the following
AD2081 port assignments:
AD2010R Camera
Assignments
AD2081 Port
Assignments
Cameras 1-256 Port A
Cameras 257-512 Port B
Cameras 513-768 Port C
Cameras 769-1024 Port D
AD2096A Alarm Interface Units If a CPU RS232 port
is not available for direct connection to an AD2096A
alarm interface unit (AIU), the AIU can be connected to
an AD2081 Port Expander that is being used with other
devices (such as AD keyboards). The AIU must be
connected to Port A on the AD2081 to insure proper
system recognition of the initial camera block connected
to the AIU. For system connections where both an AIU
and keyboards are connected to the same Port
Expander, port use must be set for keyboard.

Additional AIUs cannot be cascaded from an AIU
connected to an AD2081 Port Expander. Cascaded
AIUs must be connected directly to an RS-232 port on
the appropriate system panel.
System Connections
The typical system connection drawing on the following
page shows four AD keyboards connected to an
AD1024 CPU through an AD2081 Port Expander. By
substituting the keyboards with four AD2010R bays
equipped with AD2010DBVL modules, the drawing will
show the Port Expander used with video loss detector
devices. If a port is required for an AD2096A AIU, the
AIU can be substituted for the keyboard connected to
Port A of the AD2081. Note: system setup parameters
should reflect the port use settings described in the
paragraphs above.
The RJ-45 pin outs for the AD2081 and the devices the
unit connects to are identical with the exception of AD
keyboards which utilize two typically open pins for AC
power connections. AC power is provided to the
keyboards via an external transformer. The table directly
below lists the pin outs for both the keyboards and
other devices.
Pin Outs for AD Keyboards Pin Outs for AD2081 & other Devices
Pin # Name Pin # Name
1 Power (AC) 1 Open
2 Ground 2 Ground
3 Open 3 Open
4 RS232 Receive 4 RS232 Receive
5 RS232 Transmit 5 RS232 Transmit
6 Open 6 Open
7 Ground 7 Ground
8 Power (AC) 8 Open
The seven foot modular cable provided with the Port
Expander “flips” the receive and transmit connections
from one end of the cable to the other. This single
exception to straight-through wiring enables a transmit
signal to connect to a receiving port. For hook-ups
where the devices are separated by more than seven
feet, the modular cables must be connected to a wall-
mount terminal block. For connections between terminal
blocks, the transmit/receive reversal must be repeated
(see accompanying system illustration).
AC Power Considerations
The AD2081 Port Expander is available in two
configurations:
AD2081 is configured for a 120 VAC, 50/60 Hz primary
power source. AD2081 units are supplied with a
transformer that connects from the two pin header on
the unit directly to the wall outlet.
AD2081-1 is configured for a 230 VAC, 50/60 Hz primary
power source. AD2081-1 units are supplied with a
transformer with a Euro-style IEC 320 type inlet. A
suitable, detachable cord should be connected between
the IEC 320 inlet and the primary power source. The
cord should conform to all national and local use code
requirements.
Neither the AD2081 nor the AD2081-1 is provided with
an on/off switch. Power is applied directly at the source
and is indicated by the illumination of the green data
LED.
Installation Precautions
The installation of the AD2081 Port Expander should be made by
qualified service personnel only, and should conform to all national
and local codes. Appropriate safeguards must be taken to avoid
damage and/or malfunction caused by unqualified personnel, falling
objects, building vibrations, and other environmental hazards.
Warning

The exclamation point within an equilateral triangle
screened on the front panel of the AD2081 is intended to
alert the user to important operating instructions in the
literature accompanying the product.

The illustration to the right shows four AD
keyboards and the AD1024 system CPU
connected to the AD2081 Port Expander.
Regardless of the distance between units,
keyboard connections to the AD2081 must
be made through an eight pin wall-mount
terminal block. Pins 1 and 8 of the terminal
block connect to a wall transformer that
provides power to the keyboards.
For distances of seven feet or less,
connections between the AD2081 and the
system CPU can be made directly with a
single, eight conductor, modular cable.
All connections shown in the illustration
assume a distance of greater than seven
feet between the units. In this case, two
terminal blocks must be used to
accommodate the connections. The
recommended cable to connect between
terminal blocks is Belden 8770, 18 AWG, 3
wire shielded cable or equivalent.
The AD1024 CPU is shown in this
illustration. However, the connections
indicated are also valid for hook up to the
AD2150, AD168, and MP48 systems.
