1 Preparing for Installation
1.1 Audience
This document is intended for HP service representatives and other persons trained to install
hardware options in HP BladeSystem configurations. Such persons are expected to understand
the hazards of working in this environment and to take suitable precautions to minimize danger
to themselves and others.
1.2 Kit contents
The kit contains the following items:
• Mellanox SX1018HP Ethernet Switch for HP c-Class BladeSystems—689638-B21 (see Figure
1)
• Warranty documentation

tem Technical Resources website:
• HP BladeSystem c7000 Enclosure Setup and Installation Guide:
http://www.hp.com/go/bladesystem/documentation
For specific port connections for each server blade, see the HP BladeSystem Onboard Adminis-
trator User Guide. Connections differ by server blade type. The information contained in this
document explains the cabling between the SX1018HP Ethernet Switch and the network
switches.
The HP Onboard Administrator screen example (see Figure 2) is a reference for port mapping.
This kit does not include cables. You must order the cables separately.
Your particular switch might look slightly different.

1.3.1 Uplink Ports
The ports labelled 1 to 18 are external uplink ports. You can install up to 18 40GbE QSFP+
cables or combinations of 40 GbE and 10GbE ports. The maximum number of 10GbE ports
available using this switch and breakout cables is 34.
1.3.2 Breakout Cables
Splitting the Data Stream Using Breakout (Fanout) Cables.
Specific ports can be split by using a QSFP 1X4 breakout cable to split one 40 GbE port into 4
lanes (4 SFP+ connectors 10GbE each). These 4 lanes then go, one lane to each of the 4 SFP+
connectors. Some ports can be split into 2 10 Gb/s ports, using lanes 1 and 2 only. When a QSFP
40GbE is supported in interconnect bays 3 to 8 only.
Your screen image might vary by switch type.

Installing and removing cables in the Mellanox SX1018HP Ethernet Switch
2.1 Installing the Mellanox SX1018HP Ethernet Switch
2.1.1 Prepare the Interconnect Module Bay in the HP BladeSystem c7000 Enclosure
To prepare the interconnect module bay in the HP BladeSystem c7000 enclosure, follow
these steps:
1. Remove any devices or blanks.
2. To remove the divider, press the divider release button and slide the divider out of the inter-
connect module bay (see Figure 7).

2.1.2 Install the Mellanox SX1018HP Ethernet Switch into the HP BladeSystem Enclo-
sure
To install the Mellanox SX1018HP Ethernet Switch into the HP BladeSystem c7000 enclo-
sure, follow these steps:
1. Slide the Mellanox SX1018HP Ethernet Switch all the way into the HP BladeSystem c7000
enclosure (see
Figure 8).
2. Push the blade handle in until it is in the locked position (see Figure 8). The blade handle is
locked when you can not pull it back out without pushing the blade handle release.
Figure 8: Install Blade
2.2 Installing and Removing Cables
Figure 9 shows a cable with a QSFP+ connector used with the Mellanox SX1018HP Ethernet
Switch. QSFP+ connector to QSFP+ connector cables are used to connect multiple Mellanox
SX1018HP Ethernet Switches together. For example, you might connect two or more c-Class
interconnect modules together, for example, when another switch is installed in another HP Blad
-
eSystem c7000 enclosure that is mounted in the same rack. The Mellanox SX1018HP Ethernet
Switches are connected together by the QSFP+ to QSFP+ cables to form a high-performance net

work.

2.2.2 Removing a Cable from the Mellanox SX1018HP Ethernet Switch
To remove a cable from the Mellanox SX1018HP Ethernet Switch, pull the QSFP+ connector
release tab (
Figure 9) which releases the connector while using your other hand to remove the
connector from the switch port.
To completely remove the cable, it might be necessary to remove a releasable cable tie on the HP
c-Class blade cable management bracket.
If it is necessary to remove a releasable cable tie from the cable management bracket to fully
release a QSFP+ connector from the switch, reverse the installation procedure documented in the
cable management bracket installation guide.

3 Configuring the Switch the First Time
The procedures described in this chapter assume that you have already installed and powered-on
your switch according to the instructions in this document.
Step 1. If you are not already connected to the Onboard Administrator, connect to the Onboard Admin-
istrator of the Chassis using the serial port to your laptop.
For more information see the http://www.hp.com/support/
BladeSystem_Onboard_Administrator_UG_en
Step 2. Connect to the HP Onboard Administrator and run “connect interconnect <slot number 1-7>”.
Step 3. Configure a serial terminal program (for example, HyperTerminal, minicom, or Tera Term) on
your host PC with the settings described in
Table 5.
Step 4. Login (from a serial terminal program) as admin and use admin as password. This starts the
Mellanox configuration wizard.
Step 5. Go through the Mellanox configuration wizard. Table 6 shows an example of a wizard session.
No remote IP connection is available at this stage.
