Installing Your Operating System

CAUTION: Do not add optional hardware devices to your computer

until the operating system is successfully installed. Doing so may

cause errors and may prevent the operating system from installing

properly.

Microsoft Windows 95 or Later and Microsoft Windows NT

Workstation 4.0

The first time you turn on your computer, Microsoft Windows is

automatically installed for you. This takes approximately 5 to 20

minutes, depending on your system hardware configuration. At the

beginning of the installation process, you may be prompted to select

an operating system and/or a language for the operating system. Read

and follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the

installation.

Installing Device Drivers

Windows NT Workstation 4.0 or Windows 2000 Professional

If you need to install hardware devices after the operating system

installation is completed, the operating system needs access to the

appropriate software drivers for the devices. The I386 directory and

its subdirectories provide the Compaq-specific integration of the

operating system for your computer model and include supported

device drivers.

When prompted for the I386 directory, replace the path specification

with C:\I386 or use the browse button of the dialog box to browse the

computer for the I386 folder if required. Then reapply Service Pack

6A by clicking its icon located on your desktop.

When reapplying the service pack, if you are prompted to

replace a file with a newer version, always choose Yes.

Window 95 or Later

If you wish to install hardware devices after the operating system

installation is completed, the operating system needs access to the

appropriate software drivers for the devices. The Windows Cab files

directory and its subdirectories provide the Compaq-specific

integration of the operating system for your computer model and

include supported device drivers. The Cab files directory path is

c:\Windows\Options\Cab. However, if you are using the Compaq

Restore CD, the Cab files are located in c:\Compaq\Win95.

Converting to NTFS

Windows NT Workstation 4.0

The hard drive included with a Windows NT Workstation 4.0 model

contains a primary FAT16 partition on which the operating system

and Compaq software are installed. The rest of the hard drive is

divided into one or more additional partitions. Because FAT16 only

supports partitions up to 2 GB, converting to NTFS will allow hard

drives larger than 2 GB to be partitioned as one large drive. To

convert an existing partition from a 2 GB FAT 16 partition to a 2 GB

NTFS partition:

1. Click Start →Run.

2. Type CONVERT.EXE X: /FS:NTFS where X is the drive letter

designating the partition you wish to convert.

Alternatively, the Compaq Restore CD can be utilized to repartition

the hard drive. The largest NTFS partition possible is 7.5 to 8.0 GB,

depending on the hard drive, with a second NTFS partition created

from the remaining space on the drive.

CAUTION: The following procedures will remove all of the software

applications and data files from your hard drive. Be sure to back up

any data files you have created prior to converting from FAT16 to

NTFS, or you will not be able to restore them.

You will be able to restore the operating system and drivers required

to access the Internet from the Compaq Restore CD. The operating

system (without Compaq software or optimized drivers) may be

restored from the operating system installation CD or diskettes.

If the computer does not have a CD-ROM drive, other means of

installation, such as a network share, will be needed for this

procedure.

Insert the Compaq Restore CD, version 2.0 or higher, into the CD-

ROM drive and turn on or restart the computer. Read and follow the

instructions that appear on the screen to change the drive partitioning.

Windows 2000 Professional

To convert an existing partition from a FAT 16 partition to an NTFS

partition, double-click the NTFS Convert icon on the desktop.

Carefully read and follow the directions that appear on the screen.

Customizing the Monitor Display

If you choose to customize your monitor display, you can manually

select or change the monitor brand, model, refresh rates, color,

resolution, and power management settings. Select the Display icon in

the Control Panel to change display settings, or refer to the online

documentation provided with the graphics controller utility.

Protecting Your Software

To protect your software from loss or damage, you should keep a

backup copy of all system software, applications, and related files

stored on your hard drive. Refer to your operating system or backup

utility documentation for instructions on making backup copies of

your data files.

The Compaq Restore CD

The Compaq Restore CD offers easy deployment and recovery of your

operating system software. This can be extremely helpful in the event

of hard drive failure or corruption.

The Restore CD is specific to each Deskpro model and accompanies

many models along with the operating system CD. For questions

about or problems with this CD, please contact your local Compaq

authorized dealer or reseller or Compaq customer service.

Using the Compaq Workstation Reference Library CD

Refer to the Compaq Workstation Reference Library CD for

additional product documentation. Insert the compact disc into the

CD-ROM drive, then select the document you want to read from the

menu that appears on the screen.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to the

equipment:

■ Do not disable the power cord grounding plug. The grounding

plug is an important safety feature.

■ Plug the power cord into a grounded (earthed) electrical outlet

that is easily accessible at all times.

Disconnect power from the computer by unplugging the power cord

from either the electrical outlet or the computer.

Choosing the Quiet Drive Options

The Quiet Drive is an optional drive, included on select

models only.

If this computer is equipped with a Quiet Drive or, if you choose to

install a Quiet Drive, you may configure the drive to operate in Quiet

mode or Performance mode (default). When idle, the Quiet Drive

produces an acoustic noise level approximately 4 decibels (dB) lower

than that of a standard drive. When configured to operate in Quiet

mode, the Quiet Drive reads and writes data at an acoustic noise level

approximately 7 dB lower than that of a standard drive.

When configured to operate in Quiet mode, the drive will not

operate at maximum performance levels. For maximum drive

performance, set the drive to operate in Performance mode.

To determine if your computer contains a Quiet Drive or to activate

Quiet mode, complete the following steps:

1. Turn on or restart the computer. If you are in Windows, click

Start → Shut Down → Restart the Computer.

2. When the F10=Setup message appears in the lower-right corner

of the screen, press the F10 key.

If you do not press the F10 key while the message is

displayed, you must restart the computer again to access the

utility.

3. Select your language from the list and press the Enter key.

4. A choice of five headings appears in the Computer Setup Utilities

menu. Using the arrow keys or the Tab key, select

Storage → Device Configuration.

5. Select the drive from the list of devices. Press the Enter key.

6. Select Quiet Drive → Quiet (Performance is the factory-set

default.)

If the Quiet Drive option is not displayed, your computer does

not contain a Quiet drive.

7. To apply and save changes, select File → Save Changes and Exit.

Interpreting the Diagnostic Lights

The Compaq Deskpro Workstation AP230 features diagnostic lights

or LEDs (light emitting diodes) to indicate various computer states or

errors. The following tables describe the diagnostic light indications.

Refer to the Troubleshooting Guide for more information.

The FailSafe Boot Block ROM allows for system recovery in the

unlikely event of a ROM flash failure, for example, if a power failure

occurs during a ROM upgrade. The Boot Block is a flash-protected

section of the ROM that checks for a valid system ROM flash when

power to the system is turned on.

The following table lists the various keyboard light combinations used

by the Boot Block ROM, as well as the meaning and action associated

with each combination. Refer to the Desktop Management Guide for

more detailed information.

Windows Logo Keys

You may use the Windows Logo keys in combination with other keys

to perform certain functions in Windows 95 and later operating

systems, as described in the following table:

Windows logo key + F1 Displays a pop-up menu for the selected object.

Windows logo key + Tab Activates the next Taskbar button.

Windows logo key + E Launches Explore My Computer.

Windows logo key + F Launches Find Files.

Windows logo key + Ctrl+F Launches Find Computer.

Windows logo key + M Minimizes all open applications.

Shift+Windows logo key + M Undoes Minimize All.

Windows logo key + R Displays Run dialog box.

Turning Off Your Computer

To properly turn off your computer, click Shut Down on the Start

menu. The computer will automatically shut down.

In Windows NT Workstation 4.0, the power button always functions

as a power switch. However, in the default configuration of

Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows 2000 Professional, pressing

the power button does not turn off the power, but causes the computer

to enter a low-power state. This allows you to quickly power down,

without closing applications, and to quickly return to the same

operational state without any data loss.

To manually force the computer into a low power state, press

and hold the power button for four seconds. To reconfigure

the power button to work in On/Off mode, run Computer

Setup. Refer to Making Hardware Changes for Computer

Setup instructions.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury from electrical

shock and/or hot surfaces, before you open the computer cover for

any reason:

■ Be sure to disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet.

■ Allow the internal system components to cool before touching.
