Field Calibration Check
CHECKING ACCURACY – LEVEL (FIG. 3–6)
Checking the level accuracy of the laser unit requires two parallel walls at least 25' (7.7m) apart.
It is important to conduct a calibration check using a distance no shorter than the distance of the
applications for which the tool will be used.
1. Place the unit 2"–3" (5–8cm) from the first wall, facing the wall (Fig. 3).
2. Level the laser unit as necessary to center the bubble vials (E).
3. Mark the beam position (a) on the first wall.
4. Turn the unit 180° and level the laser unit.
5. Mark the beam position (b) on the second wall (Fig. 4).
6. Place the unit 2"–3" (5–8cm) from the second wall, facing the wall (Fig. 5).
7. Adjust the height and level the laser until the beam hits the mark at position (b).
8. Turn the unit 180° and aim the beam near the mark on the first wall from Step 3 (Fig. 6).
9. Level the laser unit and mark beam position (c).
10. The distance between marks (a) and (c) is the error:
CHECKING ACCURACY – PLUMB (FIG. 7)
Checking the plumb accuracy of the laser unit can be done most accurately when there is a
substantial amount of vertical height available, ideally 25' (8m). Use one person on the floor to
position the laser unit and another near a ceiling to mark the dot created by the laser as shown
in Figure 7. It is important to conduct a calibration check using a distance no shorter than the
distance of the applications for which the tool will be used.
1. Start by drawing an X on the floor.
2. Place the laser unit on the floor such that the vertical beam is directly above the X.
3. Center the two active bubble vials (E) to level the unit.
4. Mark the center (F) of the dot on the ceiling created by the plumb beam.
5. Turn the unit 180° and position it again above the X mark.
6. Level the laser unit.
7. Mark the center (G) of the dot on the ceiling created by the plumb beam.
The two marks on the 25' (8m) high ceiling should be no more than 1/2" (12.5mm) apart. If
the vertical distance from floor to ceiling is much less than 25' (8m), then the marks should
be closer. For example, if the height of the ceiling is 12.5', then the marks should be 1/4"
(6.5mm) apart.
Checking Level to Square Beam 90˚ Accuracy (Fig. 8)
Refer to the graphic for the location of the DW099 at each step and for the location of the marks
made at each step. All marks can be made on the floor by placing a target in front of the level
or square beam and transferring the location to the floor.
1. Find a room at least 35' (10m) long. Mark a point (H) on the floor at one end of the room.
2. Set up the laser so that its plumb beam is over point (H). Make sure the level beam points
toward the far end of the room.
3. Mark a point (I) on the floor at the center of the room using a target to transfer the level beam
location to the floor.
4. Mark a point (J) on the far wall or transfer the level beam location to the floor.
5. Move the laser to point (I) and align the level beam to point (J) again.
6. Mark the location of the square beam (K) on the floor.
NOTE: To ensure accuracy, the distances from H to I, I to J, and I to K should be equal.
7. Turn the laser 90° so that the level beam aligns with point K.
8. Mark the location of the square beam (L) on the floor as close as possible to point (H).
9. Measure the distance between points (H) and (L). If the measurement is greater than the
values indicated, the laser is out of squareness.
Troubleshooting
THE LASER DOES NOT TURN ON
Make sure batteries are installed according to the label in the battery compartment.
Make sure the batteries are in proper working condition. If in doubt, try installing new
batteries.
Make sure that the battery contacts are clean and free of rust or corrosion. Be sure to keep
the laser level dry and use only new, high-quality, name brand batteries to reduce the
chance of battery leakage.
If the laser unit is heated above 120˚F (50˚C), the unit will not turn on. If the laser has been
stored in extremely hot temperatures, allow it to cool. The laser level will not be damaged by
pressing the on/off button before cooling to its proper operating temperature.
