Before You Begin
This Getting Started Guide contains instructions for deploying the SonicWall
®
SMA 8200v on your virtual
infrastructure. The SMA 8200v is a virtual appliance that has nearly all the features and functionality of a
SonicWall SMA or EX Series hardware appliance.
Features not supported on the SMA 8200v include:
FIPS Mode
The SMA 8200v provides the following benefits:
Cost savings:
No need to purchase and maintain hardware appliances, reducing hardware costs, power
consumption, and maintenance costs.
Operational ease:
In a virtual environment, new virtual appliances can easily be commissioned and old ones can be
easily decommissioned.
Installation files are imported into the virtual environment with no need to run an installer.
Obtain high availability of your VPN using your virtual infrastructure’s high availability features.
Easy reallocation of resources
Strong security with the same operating system as the SMA-1000 series hardware-based appliances.

Supported Platforms
The following hypervisor platforms are supported:
For VMware, you can use the following client applications to import the image and configure the virtual
settings:
VMware vSphere – Provides infrastructure and application services in a graphical user interface for ESXi,
included with ESXi.
VMware vCenter Server – Centrally manages multiple VMware ESXi environments.
Hardware Resource Requirements
The following hardware resources are required for the SMA 8200v appliance.
Files for Installation
SMA 8200v is available for download from MySonicWall. Different files are used depending on the type of
installation.
Upload the upgrade file to the System software updates area of the Maintenance page on the appliance
management interface of your SMA 8200v deployment.
All service packs for patches and hot fixes are the same for the SMA 8200v as for SMA-1000 series appliances.

Installing SMA 8200v on ESXi
The SMA 8200v can be installed by deploying an OVA file to your ESXi server. Each OVA file contains all related
software components needed. Deploy the OVA file by using the vSphere or vCenter client, which come with
ESXi. To download the vSphere client, point a browser to your ESXi server and click on Download vSphere Client.
To perform a fresh install of the SMA 8200v using the vSphere client:
1 Download the ex_vm_x.x.x.xxxx.ova OVA file from MySonicWall to a system that is accessible to your
ESXi server.
2 Launch vSphere and use it to log on to your ESXi server.
3 In the Home screen, navigate to a view that shows the virtual machines running on your ESXi server.
IMPORTANT: Do not rename the OVA file.

4 To begin the import process, click File and select Deploy OVF Template.
5 Select Browse to locate the OVA file either from a URL to download from or locate it on your system.
6 Click Next.
7 Review the details in OVF Template Details and click Next.

8 Review the End User License Agreement and click Accept.
9 Click Next.
10 In the Name field, enter a descriptive name for the SMA 8200v appliance. The name can contain up to 80
characters and must be unique.
11 Select the desired location in the Inventory Location field.

12 Click Next.
13 On the Host / Cluster page, select the host or cluster that your virtual appliance is being built on.
14 Select Next.
15 On the Resource Pool page, select the resource pool where you want to deploy the template.
16 Select Next.

17 In the Storage page, select a destination where you want to store the virtual machine files.
18 Click Next.
19 In the Disk Format page, review and verify the displayed information.
20 Select the type of provisioning for your disk space.
21 Select Next.

22 On the Network Mapping pages, select what networks that are mapped to this the virtual appliance.
23 Select Next.
24 Review the options listed in the Ready to Complete screen and, click Next or Back to navigate back
through the screens to make a change.
25 If correct, click Finish to create your new Appliance. The name of the new SMA 8200v appears in the left
pane of the vSphere window when complete.
The Deploying dialog box shows the progress and tell you when the deployment has completed
successfully.

Viewing and Editing Virtual Machine
Settings
When logged into vSphere, you can see view and edit some basic information for your SMA 8200v virtual
appliance that may be useful when completing the rest of the configuration.
To view the Summary:
1 Select your appliance in the left pane.
2 Select the Summary tab.
The Summary tab displays the details for your virtual appliance and provides sections such as General,
Commands, Annotations and Resources. The blue text in these panes indicate links to web sites,
additional information or basic commands.
To edit virtual system settings:
1 In the left navigation pane, right-click on the SMA 8200v and select Edit Settings.

2 On the Hardware tab, select the device on the left and makes changes to the editable settings in the right
pane. You can also add or remove devices by selecting the appropriate button.
3 Select the Options tab to view and edit other settings. Select the setting on the left to view and edit the
settings on the right.
4 Select the Resources tab to view and edit the resource allocation settings.

5 When finished, click OK.
Powering the SMA 8200v On or Off
There are multiple ways to power the SMA 8200v on or off. Choose one of the following:
Right-click the SMA 8200v in the left pane and navigate to Power > Power On or Power > Power Off
Select the SMA 8200v in the left pane, go to the Getting Started tab, and click Power on the virtual
machine or Shut down the virtual machine.
Select the SMA 8200v in the left pane, go to the Summary tab, and click Power On or Shut down guest.
Configuring Host Settings on the Console
After powering on the SMA 8200v, perform the following steps to open the console and configure the IP address
and default route settings:
1 In vSphere, right-click the SMA 8200v in the left pane and select Open Console from the menu.
2 If the virtual machine is not powered on, click the green “Power On” arrow button in the top control bar
of the console window.
3 Click inside the window and type root at the login prompt and then press Enter. The first time you access
the console, the Setup Tool automatically runs.
NOTE: Your mouse pointer disappears when you click in the console window. To release it, press
Ctrl+Alt.

4 After the welcome message displays, press any key to proceed.
5 At the IP address prompt, type in the local IP address for the SMA 8200v.
6 At the Subnet mask prompt, type in the subnet mask.
7 At the Gateway prompt, type in the IP address of the default gateway used to access the local interface.
8 Review the information your provided and press Enter to accept the value shown for each of the
following:
IP address
Subnet mask
Gateway
9 Confirm that you want to save and apply the settings by typing y and pressing Enter. It may take a few
minutes to complete.
After the settings are applied, a message is displayed to continue configuration at:
https://<IP address>:8443
10 Press Ctrl+Alt to activate your cursor.
11 Close the console window by clicking the X.
Setup and basic installation of the virtual appliance is complete. Proceed to Configuring Settings in AMC to
configure the appliance.

The SMA 8200-v can be installed on the Microsoft Hyper-V environment on these operating platforms:
Windows Server 2019
Windows Server 2016
The SMA 8200v can be installed by deploying an SMA ISO file to your Hyper-V environment. The ISO file contains
all related software components.
To perform a fresh install of the SMA 8200v in a Hyper-V environment:
1 Download the SMA ISO file (such as 12.x.x-xxx.iso) from MySonicWall to a location that can be
accessed by the Hyper-V Manager.
2 In the Hyper-V Manager, create a new virtual machine.

3 If the Before You Begin page opens, click Next.
4 Type in a descriptive name for the virtual machine and optionally specify a different location, then click
Next.
5 In the Specify Generation screen, select Generation 1, then click Next.

6 In the Assign Memory screen, in the Startup Memory field, type in 8192. This provides 8 GB (8192 MB) of
memory for the virtual machine. Click Next.
7 In the Connection drop-down list, select the virtual switch to use for connecting the network adaptor of
the virtual machine, then click Next
8 In the Connect Virtual Hard Disk screen, create a new 64 GB hard drive. The new drive name should have
the same name as the original file you installed. If the file name extension is not already .vhdx (instead
of .vhd), change it to .vhdx.

9 Click Finish.
10 To add the hard drive to the virtual machine on IDE Controller 0, right-click on the virtual machine and
select Settings to configure it.
The Hard Drive page displays.
11 Click Add Hardware and select Network Adapter to create a second network adapter.
12 Select the virtual switch to connect the second network adapter to, and click Apply.

13 The virtual machine is created as a DVD, so in the Installation Options screen, choose the following:
a Select the Install an operating system from a bootable CD/DVD-ROM option.
b In the Image file field, specify the media for the DVD to be the SMA ISO file.
c Change the virtual machine BIOS boot order so that DVD is first.
14 Click Next.
15 In the Summary screen, click Finish.
NOTE: The image file name follows the format x.x.x-yyy.iso, where x.x.x is the version
number of the SMA firmware and yyy is the build number.
NOTE: The settings shown in the description reflects the settings for your configuration.

Completing Hyper-V Setup
1 To start the virtual machine, right-click it and select Start. It boots from the DVD.
After a successful start, an SMA 8200v is created and the virtual machine is automatically stopped.
2 Remove the ISO DVD, as it is no longer needed. (Under Media, select None.)
3 Change the virtual machine BIOS boot order so that the hard drive comes before the CD.

4 Connect the network adapters to the appropriate virtual switch in the Hyper-V environment.
The next time the virtual machine is started, it boots from the hard drive and you can configure the SMA
8200v from the console.
