FCC
This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC rules. Operation is subject to the following two
conditions: (1) this device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept
any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.
This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital
device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable
protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial envi-
ronment. This equipment uses, generates, and can radiate radio frequency energy and if not
installed in accordance with the operators manual, may cause harmful interference to radio
communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause inter-
ference in which case the user will be required to correct the interference at his own expense.
Changes or modifications made to this device which are not expressly
approved by Cabletron Systems could void the users authority to operate the
equipm ent.

apparatus set out in the Radio Interference Regulations of the Canadian Department of Com-
munications.

About This Manual
Rev Date Reason for Update
01 August 1997 General availability
02 March 1998 New format
This manual supplements screen prompts and menus as an aid in configuring the database and
performing system operations on a Netlink FRX8000. Before using the manual, you should be
familiar with FRX8000 hardware, as well as the protocols (frame relay, SNA, etc.) you will be
using.
Terminology and Conventions
This typeface represents general text. This typeface represents keyboard input and video output.
(This text is dark cyan in on-screen versions of the manual, and black in paper versions.)
In on-screen versions of the manual, items in blue are links to other places in the manual.
This symbol points to an informational note relating to the text, table, or figure that
immediately precedes or follows it.
This symbol and text identifies a cautionary note, the content of which is more
critical to heed than an informational note.
The following references to keyboard keys appear in the manual and/or on the screen:
[N] is a reference to a key on your keyboard (whereN is the key).
Enter means that you should type in the information, then press the [E nte r] key.
Type is similar to Enter, except that the word[E nte r] follows the information to be
typed (e.g.,type n [Enter]”).
Press means press (hit, strike) the key once. Pressing the [Enter] key afterwards is not
necessary.
[Ctrl] followed by one or two other key designations, must be struck simultaneously
with the other keys shown.
If a statement ends with a reference to a keyfor example, “....then press [Enter].—the period
is not part of the data to be entered. If a period should be entered, it will be shown as [.]. The
same applies to all other punctuation. When instructed to, for example, press [A], [B] from the
Main Menu, this means press [A], then [B], not [A] comma [B].
Screen Displays
Screen Displays are provided to show the general appearance of actual screens. They are only
examples—the information shown is not always representative of an operational system.

Overview
The Netlink
TM
FRX8000 is a fully integrated LAN/WAN enterprise switch, con-
necting remote network sites with a robust switching technology that allows trans-
mission of LAN and WAN data traffic over a single access line. The FRX8000 allows
the features of conventional multi-protocol routers to be combined with those of fast
packet switches, delivering high performance regardless of the demands of the access
protocols being used.
Some typical applications of the FRX8000:
SDLC-to-LLC2 and LLC2-to-QLLC conversion over frame relay
SNA and TCP/IP LAN/WAN integrationwith or without routers.
Banking applications—LAN, SNA, TCP/IP, async.
Feeder networks to public frame relay services.
“Front end” network to larger frame relay switches.
Public and private access and backbone applications.

Versatile Management Functions
Connection Management
Connection prioritizing and dynamic bandwidth assignment
Multiple transport classes, configurable per connection
Protocol-independent SPF (shortest path first) routing among FRX8000s
Dynamic load balancing
Network Manager
Two types:
FRX8000 INM (Integrated Network Manager) is an FRX8000 Switch and
network manager in the same box.
NMP is a stand-alone manager, connected to the network via an attached
Nucleus 7000 (N7400/N7500) node.
Nucleus 7000 Release 5.0 is supported in the current release of
FRX8000, to allow a smooth transition of existing N7000 net-
works to FRX8000.
Intuitive, menu-based system that provides complete local management (via
local VGA monitor or remote ASCII terminal) of network nodes
File transfer between INMs/NMPs, and from an INM or NMP to an ICP. (ICP
is an FRX8000 Switch with all the functionality of the INM except the user
interface)
Remote software updates to FRX8000 Switches
Self-learning route configuration
Centralized alarm routing
Statistics displays
SNMP Management Support
Support of get, get_next, and (for some fields) set commands from SNMP
manager, providing topology information and node status
FTP and telnet access to ICPs, INMs, and NMPs
MIB II (RFC 1213) System & Interfaces Group, plus parts of frame relay
(RFC1315) and SDLC (RFC1747) MIBs
Enterprise network status information via local MIB on node
