PROGRAMMABLE OPERATION OF YOUR TREADMILL
Target Heart Rate
The old motto, “no pain, no gain”, is a myth that has been overpowered by the benefits ofexercising comfortably. A
great deal of this success has been promoted by the use of heart ratemonitors. With the proper use of a heart rate
monitor, many people find that their choice of exerciseintensity is either too high or too low and exercise is much
more enjoyable by maintaining their heartrate in the desired benefit range.
To determine the benefit range in which you wish to train, you must first determine your MaximumHeart Rate. This
can beaccomplished by using thefollowing formula: 220 -User’s Age = Maximum HeartRate. If you enter your ageduring
programming of theconsole the console willperform this calculationautomatically. This is used forthe HR control
programs .Aftercalculating your MaximumHeart Rate, you can decideupon which goal you wouldlike to pursue. The
two mostpopular reasons for, or goals ofexercise, are cardiovascularfitness (training for the heartand lungs) and weight
control. The black columns on the chart above represent the Maximum HeartRate for a person whose age is listed
at the bottom of each column. The training heart rate, for eithercardiovascular fitness or weight loss, is represented
by two different lines that cut diagonally throughthe chart. A definition of the lines’ goal is in the bottom left-hand
corner of the chart. If your goal iscardiovascular fitness or if it is weight loss, it can be achieved by training at 90% or
70%,respectively, of your Maximum Heart Rate on a schedule approved by your physician. Consult yourphysician before
participating in any exercise program. With all Spirit Heart Rate Control treadmills, you may use the heart rate monitor
feature withoutusing the Heart Rate Control program. This function can be used during manual mode or during anyof
the nine different programs. The Heart Rate Control program automatically controls incline.
CAUTION!
The target value used in H-1 and H-2 programs is a suggestion only for normal, healthy individuals.Do not exceed your
limits! You may not be able to obtain your chosen target. If in question, enter ahigher age value that will set a lower target
goal.

USING A HEART RATE TRANSMITTER
How to wear your wireless chest strap transmitter:
1. Attach the transmitter to the elastic strap using the locking parts.
2. Adjust the strap as tightly as possible as long as the strap is not too tight to remain comfortable.
3. Position the transmitter with the Spirit logo centered in the middle of your body facing away fromyour chest (some
people must position the transmitter slightly left of center). Attach the final end ofthe elastic strap by inserting the
round end and, using the locking parts, secure the transmitter andstrap around your chest.
4. Position the transmitter immediately below the pectoral muscles.
5. Sweat is the best conductor to measure very minute heart beat electrical signals. However, plainwater can also be
used to pre-wet the electrodes (2 black square areas on the reverse side of the beltand either side of transmitter). It’s
also recommended that you wear the transmitter strap a fewminutes before your work out. Some users, because of
body chemistry, have a more difficult time inachieving a strong, steady signal at the beginning. After “warming up”, this
problem lessens. Asnoted, wearing clothing over the transmitter/strap doesn’t affect performance.
6. Your workout must be within range - distance between transmitter/receiver – to achieve a strongsteady signal. The
length of range may vary somewhat but generally stay close enough to theconsole to maintain good, strong, reliable
readings. Wearing the transmitter immediately againstbare skin assures you of proper operation. If you wish, you may
wear the transmitter over a shirt. Todo so, moisten the areas of the shirt that the electrodes will rest upon.
Note: The transmitter is automatically activated when it detects activity from the user’s heart. Additionally, itautomatically
deactivates when it does not receive any activity. Although the transmitter is water resistant, moisture canhave the effect
of creating false signals, so you should take precautions to completely dry the transmitter after use toprolong battery life
(estimated transmitter battery life is 2500 hours). The replacement battery is Panasonic CR2032.
Erratic Operation:
Caution!Do not use this treadmill for Heart Rate Control unless a steady, solid Actual HeartRate value is being
displayed. High, wild, random numbers being displayed indicate aproblem.Areas to look for on interference:
(1) Treadmill not properly grounded -A must!
(2) Microwave ovens, T.V.s, small appliances, etc.
(3) Fluorescent lights.
(4) Some household security systems.
(5) Perimeter fence for a pet.
(6) Loose treadmill console / upright.
WARNING!
DO NOT USE THE HEART RATE CONTROL PROGRAM IF YOUR HEART RATE IS NOTREGISTERING
PROPERLY ON THE TREADMILL’S DISPLAY!
Special Operations of Heart Rate Functions
All Spirit treadmills that are factory equipped with a Heart Rate Control system have many distinctfeatures both in the
Heart Rate Control program and during heart rate monitoring. This section willgive you a more detailed background to
use your treadmill in the most effective manner.
1458AU-16
HEART RATE CONTROL
How the Heart Rate Control Program Works
Heart Rate Control (HRC) uses your treadmill’s speed and incline systems to adjust your heart rate.Increases
and decreases in elevation affect heart rate much more efficiently than changes in speedalone. The HRC program
automatically changes the speed and elevation gradually to achieve theprogrammed target heart rate.
Selecting a Heart Rate Control Program
You have the option, during the setup mode, to choose either the Weight Control (H-1) program orthe Cardiovascular
(H-2) program. Weight Control attempts to maintain your heart rate at 70% ofyour Maximum Heart Rate.
Cardiovascular attempts to maintain your heart rate at 90% of yourMaximum Heart Rate. Your Maximum Heart Rate is
based upon a formula that subtracts your agefrom 220. Your age input is performed during the setup mode.
CAUTION!
The target value used in H-1 and H-2 programs is a suggestion only for normal, healthyindividuals. Do not exceed your limits!
You may not be able to obtain your chosen target. If inquestion, enter a higher age value that will set a lower target goal.
Heart Rate Control programming
CAUTION!
Intended for wireless transmitter chest strap only. Do not use Pulse Grip bar for Heart Rate Control. You must receive a
strong / steady value in heart rate window.

BELT TRACKING ADJUSTMEANT
If during use you notice that walking belt either shifts to the right or the left of center, firstremove “Safety Key” and
unplug equipment from AC power source. Using M6 Allen wrenchprovided, turn left rear roller adjustment as indicated
below clockwise no more the 1/4” of aturn. Remove M6 Allen wrench, insert “Safety Key” and insert AC power cord into
AC outlet.Turn on your treadmill and observe after running a few minutes to see if problem has beencorrected. This may
take several adjustments, so repeat the above procedure.
TREADMILL LUBRICATION
Your treadmill should require little maintenance other then periodically applying lubricant.Lubricating under the treadbelt
will ensure superior performance and extend its life expectancy.
HOW TO CHECK TREADBELT FOR PROPER LUBRICATION?
Lift one side of the treadbelt and feel the top surface of the treadboard. If the surface is slick to the touch, then no further
lubrication is required. If the surface is dry to the touch, apply one packet of lubricant or half of the bottle of lubricant.
HOW TO APPLY LUBRICANT?
1. Lift one side of treadbelt.
2. Pour one half of the lubricant bottle under the center of the treadbelt on the top surface of thetreadboard.
3. Walk on the treadmill at a slow speed for 3 to 5 minutes to evenly distribute lubricant.
NOTE: DO NOT over lubricate treadboard. Any excess lubricant that comes out should be wipedoff.
IMPORTANT: ONLY USE HALF THE BOTTLE OF LUBRICANT PER APPLICATIONLUBRICATION SCHEDULE.
1. After the first 25 hours of use (2-3 months) apply one half bottle of lubricant.
2. Every 50 hours of use (5-8 months) apply one half bottle of lubricant.
1458AU-19
AEROBIC EXERCISE
Aerobic exercise is any sustained activity that sends oxygen to your muscles via your heart and lungs. Aerobic exercise
improves the fitness of your lungs and heart - your body’s most important muscle. Aerobic exercise fitness is promoted
by any activity that uses your large muscle -arms, legs, or buttock, for example. Your heart beats quickly and you breathe
deeply. An aerobic exercise should be part of your entire exercise routine.
WEIGHT TRAINING
Along with aerobic exercising which helps get rid of and keep off the excess fat that our bodies can store, weight train
-
ing is an essential part of the exercise routine process. Weight training helps tone, build and strengthen muscle. If you are
working above your target zone, you may want to do a less amount of reps. And as always consult your physician before
beginning any exercise program.
MUSCLE CHART
CYCLE
The exercise routine that is performed on the cycle will develop the lower body muscle group as well as condition the
circulatory system and provide a good aerobic workout . These muscle groups are highlighted on the muscle chart below.
FITNESS TIPS AND TRCHNIQUES
1458AU-20
How you begin your exercise program depends on your physical condition. If you have been inactive for several years, or
are severely overweight, you must start slowly and increase your time on the equipment; a few minutes per workout.
Initially, you may be able to exercise only for a few minutes in your target zone, however, your aerobic fitness will improve
over the next six to eight weeks. Don’t be discouraged if it takes longer. It’s important to work at your own pace. Ulti
-
mately, you’ll be able to exercise continuously for 30 minutes. The better your aerobic fitness, the harder you will have to
work to stay in your target zone. Please remember these essentials :
• Have your doctor review your training and diet programs to advise you of a workout routine you should adopt.
• Begin your training program slowly with realistic goals that have been set by you and your doctor.
• Monitor your pulse frequently. Establish your target heart rate based on your age and condition.
• Set up your equipment on a flat, even surface at least 3 feet from walls and furniture.
EXERCISE INTENSITY
To maximize the benefits of exercising, it is important to exercise with the
proper intensity. The proper intensity level can be found by using your heart
rate as a guide. For effective aerobic exercise, your heart rate should be
maintained at a level between 70% and 85% of your maximum heart rate as
you exercise. This is known as your target zone. You can find your target zone
in the table below. Target zones are listed for both unconditioned and condi
-
tioned persons according to age.
During the first few months of your exercise program, keep your heart rate
near the low end of your target zone as you exercise. After a few months,
your heart rate can be increased gradually until it is near the middle of your
target zone as you exercise.
To measure your heart rate, stop exercising but continue moving your legs
or walking around and place two fingers on your wrist. Take a six-second
heartbeat count and multiply the results by 10 to find your heart rate. For ex
-
ample, if your six-second heartbeat count is 14, your heart rate is 140 beats
per minute. (A six-seconds count is used because your heart rate will drop
rapidly when you stop exercising.) Adjust the intensity of your exercise until
your heart rate is at the proper level.
