Site Requirements
Environment: 32–104
o
F (0-40
o
C) and 5–95% humidity, non-condensing.
An AC power outlet of the appropriate voltage (110–125/60 Hz or 200–240
VAC/50 Hz) must be located within five feet of the device.
For adequate air flow, allow at least four inches of clearance at the rear and at
least two inches at the sides, front, and top. DO NOT remove the rubber
mounting feet from the bottom of the unit, as these provide necessary space for
air flow through the fan. Also, make sure the FRX4000 sits on its mounting
feet, not on its sheet metal bottom surface. Do not place the unit on a surface
that is smaller in area than the spaces between the mounting feet.
If you will be rack mounting the FRX4000, the holes in the vertical mounting
angles in the rack must either be threaded (10-32) or have captive nuts installed.
For reference, an FRX4000 weighs 9 lbs. (4.1 kg), and is 17.5" (44 cm) wide,
11" (27.7 cm) deep, and 1.75" (4.4 cm) high.
Required Equipment
Tools
The only tools you need are a small flat-head screwdriver and a medium
Phillips-head screwdriver.
User Cables
The LAN interface on the Ethernet model of FRX4000 is provided in RJ-45
(UTP) and 15-pin "D" female (AUI, for Thicknet). The LAN interface on the
Token Ring model is provided in RJ-45 (UTP) and 9-pin "D" female (STP).
The LAN cable and, if Ethernet AUI, the transceiver, must be provided by the
customer.
The optional CSU/DSU interface is RJ-48S. The cable must be provided by the
customer.
Assuming that you ordered the necessary WAN interface cables with the
FRX4000, you will need to know which cable will plug into which WAN port.
Table 1 (on page 7) lists the WAN ports and cables.
Installation & Setup Guide 1
Operator Interface
The FRX4000 does not require a keyboard or terminal for normal operation.
However, setup and configuration of a new FRX4000 requires a directly con-
nected async terminal or a PC emulating a terminal.
Set the async terminal device for:
9600 bps Autowrap Application keypad
8 bits no parity No newline Application cursor key
No break VT100 mode Tab every 8 columns
For direct connection to a terminal or PC, each FRX4000 is shipped with:
Cable, DB9S to DB9S, 5 feet, Cabletron number FRX-PC-CAB, for
connecting the Console port (see Figure 7 on page 6) directly to a PC
(with software emulating an async terminal). (See Figure 1.)
Adapter, DB9P to DB25S, Cabletron number FRX-9/25-ADAP, for
connecting the FRX4000 directly (via cable FRX-PC-CAB) to a cus-
tomer-supplied async terminal (See Figure 2).
Cable, DB9S to DB9P, 5 feet, Cabletron number FRX-MOD-CAB, for
connecting the FRX4000 to a modem. (See Figure 3.) This requires the
following, supplied by the customer:
Two auto-answer modems, capable of 9600 bps. (If the modem at
the FRX4000 end does not have a DB25S connector, you will also
need a gender adapter.)
One straight-through cable from async terminal to modem.

Installation & Setup Guide 3
Installing an FRX4000
The customer and sales representative decide on the necessary hardware and
software components at the time a FRX4000 is ordered. These components
(except cables) are then installed before the unit is shipped to the customer.
Steps to be taken at the customer site are described in this section.
1. Unpack and inspect the equipment. A shipment will generally include two
boxes, the contents of which are described below. If there is evidence of
physical damage, contact the transport company that delivered the
equipment. If parts are missing, contact your sales representative.
Box 1 contains:
"Read Me First" packet: includes software license agreement, updates
to this document, and other pertinent information.
FRX4000 (including serial expansion card, if ordered).
Power cable.
One V.35 DTE I/O cable.
Auxiliary Console cable set:
Cable FRX-PC-CAB
Cable FRX-MOD-CAB
Adapter FRX-9/25-ADAP.
Rack-mount kit:
2 rack-mount brackets|
12 6-32x1/4 flat-head screws
4 10-32x5/8 pan-head screws
4 #10 split-ring lock washers
4 #10 flat washers.
This Installation & Setup guide.
Box 2 contains all other cables that were ordered with the FRX4000.
2. Record the serial number found on the bottom of the FRX4000. This will
be needed for any correspondence with Cabletron Systems concerning the
device.
3. If you are not rack mounting the unit, go to step 5. If you are mounting the
unit into a 19-inch rack, attach the mounting brackets as shown in Figure
4, using the 6-32x¼ screws included with the brackets.
Note that the design of the brackets allows you to attach them with the tabs
at either the front or the rear of the FRX4000.

4. Attach the FRX4000 to the rack's mounting angles as shown in the next
two figures. If mounting the device into a rack with EIA-standard hole
spacing (repeating pattern of 5/8"-5/8"-1/2"), make sure each mounting
tab on the FRX4000 is centered on a hole with 5/8" between it and the next
hole in either direction, as shown in Figure 5.

Tighten the retaining screws on each WAN port cable connector and the
Console port cable connector. If attaching a Thick Ethernet cable to the
AUI port, note that the connector has a slide latch. Snap the latch over the
posts on the cable connector to lock it in place.
If the assembly is rack mounted, secure the cables to the sides of the ver-
tical rails or to a horizontal bar or rail with cable ties, to provide strain
relief to the cable connectors.
WAN ports 0-7 provide the following interfaces:
* If the optional CSU/DSU port is used, WAN port 1 is not functional.
DCE cables have female connectors at the user end, and DTE
cables have male connectors.
Installation & Setup Guide 7
The cable connected to the Console Port depends on what device is at the
other end of the cable, as shown in Figure 1 through Figure 3.
6. Make sure the AC power switch on the rear of the FRX4000 (see Figure
7) is Off. (The switch is off when the left side is depressed.) This is simply
to assure the FRX4000 will not start before you are ready.
7. Plug the other ends of the cables into the appropriate devices: modems,
user devices, other FRX4000s, extender cables, AC receptacle.
Secure each connector by the appropriate means. Note that each WAN
port cable has retaining screws to secure it to another cable or device. The
mating connector should have threaded (4-40) stand-offs to accept the
screws. If it does not, wrap the connection with cable ties, electrical tape,
or something else that will ensure a secure fit.
8. Switch on the terminal (if necessary), then the FRX4000. The FRX4000's
green Power light should come on.
Figure 8 LEDs
9. As the FRX4000 boots (starts), a series of messages will be displayed,
tracking the loading of the software. These messages are written to a file
named
BOOTRPT.TXT
. If there appears to be a problem during boot-up,
the contents of this file can be displayed (as described later), to help
determine the problem.
When the boot process is complete, a screen similar to Figure 9 will be dis-
played. (No status will be shown until the software is configured.)

This completes the installation. If this FRX4000 is the first one in a network
that contains other FRX4000s running an older release of the software, the new
software can be downloaded to the other FRX4000s. (This works only with
other FRX4000s-although the base software is the same, you cannot download
from an FRX4000 to an FRX6000, 9W004, or SmartSwitch 1800.)
Updating Other FRX4000s
To remotely update another FRX4000 with software from the new FRX4000,
follow this procedure:
1. Make sure File Transfer IDs are specified in the Node Defaults records of
both FRX4000s.
2. Press
[C]
at the On-Line Node Operations menu (or
[B], [A], [C]
from the
Main Menu).
3. When prompted, enter the File Transfer ID and password of the node you
are updating.
4. Press
[Y]
or
[N]
when asked:
Will the remote node be using any of IP, LLC2,
or IPX?
5. Press
[Y]
when asked:
Are you sure you want to do a remote software update?
The transfer process, repeated for each file, is as follows:
1. The originating node will send a message that includes the name and size
of the largest file to be sent. A request for the remote node's release
number will also be sent with the first file name. If the release numbers of
the sending and receiving nodes are incompatible, the transfer will not
occur, and an error message will be displayed. If this happens, contact
your service representative.
2. The remote node will check to make sure there is enough disk space to
accept the file; if not, the connection will be cleared and a corresponding
message displayed. If there is enough disk space, the file will be trans-
ferred, and stored in the remote node under a temporary file name until the
node verifies that the file is the expected size. (If it is not, the temporary
file will be deleted.)
3. If the temporary file is the expected size, the "old" file will be deleted and
the new file renamed. As the update progresses, you can press
[F4]
at any
time to abort the transfer and clear the connection. Once the update is com-
plete, the sending node will clear the connection.
