The ComTrac is an adjustable speed tracon drive that
transfers power between a motor mounted drive cone and a
tracon ring.
Maintenance and Repair
ComTrac Adjustable Speed Drives automacally compensate
for normal wear of the tracon ring. However, if aer
several thousand hours the annular contact surface of the
tracon ring becomes worn, the output sha of the drive
will slip, and tend to stop under normal load – especially at
the top end of the speed range.
The condion of the tracon ring can be checked aer
removal of the housing cover (see illustraon). The tracon
ring must be replaced when the annular contact surface
has worn down almost to the metal edge of the mounng
ange.
Observance of the nameplate power range for the parcular
ComTrac Drive in use will ensure that the tracon ring will
wear evenly.
Changing the Tracon Ring
Cauon: Appropriate eye protecon must be worn prior to
beginning this procedure.
Step 1 Remove the 4 socket head cap screws and remove
the housing cover.
Step 2 Carefully pull out the tracon ring complete with the
ange and sha from the bearings.
Cauon: Protect the precision ground sha from damage.
Step 3 Remove the tracon ring from its ange as shown
below.
Step 4 Press in the new tracon ring by applying light
hammer strokes unl the ring is evenly seated. Use a block
of hardwood between the hammer and the ring or use a
so mallet. Be careful not to damage the new tracon
ring. Clean the housing and the ring hub.
Step 5 If desired, replace the tracon ring, ange (11), and
sha assembly (12) complete (Kit C).
Step 6 Carefully replace the tracon ring and sha taking
precauon not to damage the oil seal. Rotate the ring/sha
assembly to be sure the cams are properly seated.
Step 7 Be sure the annular contact surface of the tracon
ring and the drive cone surface are not damaged during
assembly, and are free from grease. Wipe o any oil or
grease with a dry rag, or preferably a clean paper ssue.
Step 8 When reassembling the housing, do not use more
force than is necessary to overcome the spring pressure.
Step 9 Replace the lubricant in the bearing/cam chamber
with the proper amount of lubricant. Replace the oil ll
plug.
Step 10 Grease the motor slideways by pumping small
amounts of grease through the grease ngs.
Step 11 The new tracon ring requires me to run in.
Therefore, avoid running the drive at full load during the rst
few hours of operaon.
