SettingModeOverview
The Settings switch has five positions to select a parameter, turn a
parameterONorOFF,andtoadjustparametervalues.
PressandreleasetheMeasurementTrigger.
Press the
button left to enter the Setting Mode. The
parameterselectedwillappearinthedisplay.
Pressthe
buttonrighttoadvancetothenextparameter.
Presstheup
ordown buttonstochangeaparameterstatusoradjustaparameter
value.
Pressthe buttontostoreparameterchangesandadvancetothenextparameter.
Pressthe buttonlefttoexittheSettingsmodeandreturntoMeasurementmode.
Note:IfnobuttonispressedwithintheAPOtimethemeterwillshutdown.Itmaybehelpful
toextendtheAPOtimewhenmakingadjustmentsintheSettingsmode.

SurfaceTemperatureMeasurements
1. Typicalsettingshouldbe:LaserpointerON,BacklightON,Temperatureunitssetasneeded,
Emissivitysetto0.95,APO(autopowerOFF)setto10secondsandFlashlightONif
measuringinadimlylitarea.
2. Openthelensprotectivelenscoverbyrotatingthe
coverwheelclockwise(facing
thelens)untilthedotis
visibleonthewheel.
3. HoldthemeterbyitsHandleGripandpointittoward
thesurfacetobemeasured.
4. PullandholdtheTriggertoturnthemeteronand
begintestinginScanmode.Thedisplaywilllightifthe
batteriesaregood.Replacethebatteriesifthedisplay
doesnotlight.
5. ReleasetheTrigger;thereadingwillHOLDforthetime
setintheAPOsetting.Thebacklightwillturnoffafterapproximately4seconds.
6. Themeterdefaultstotheprogrammedconditionsinusewhenthemeterwas
lastswitched
OFF.
LaserPointer
The laser pointer circle identifies the area being
measured.Thesizeof theareaisdeterminedby the
distance to spot ratio. Objects outside the circle are
notmeasured. The spot measuredshould always be
largerthanthecircleforaccuratemeasurements.
MAX,MIN,AVERAGEandMAXMIN
IntheMAXMINAVGmodethemeterwillrecordtheMaximum valuescanned,Minimumvalue
scanned,theAverageofthescannedvaluesandtheDifferencebetweentheMaxandMinvalue.

UVLeakDetector
Injectasmallamountofflorescentdyeintothesystemundertest.Thedye/systemmixture
(refrigerant,forexample)willescapeandaccumulateatallleaksites.TurntheblueUVLEDson
intheSettingmodeandscanthesystem.Theresidueofthedyeattheleakcanbeeasily
observedundertheUVlight.DyesareavailableatmostHVACsupplyoutlets.
LocatingHotorColdSpots
Todetectahotorcoldspot,aimthethermometerataregionbeyond
thetargetandthenscantheentireregioninaslow,up/downmotion.
DistancetoSpotRatio(FieldofView)
Themeter’s fieldof view is 12:1(distance tospotratio). For example,if themeteris60cm (24
inches)fromthetarget(spot),thediameterofthetargetmustbeatleast5cm(2inches).Other
distancesareshownbelowinthefieldofviewdiagram.
Note that measurements should normally be made further than 60cm (24 inches) from the
target.Themetercanmeasurefromfurtherdistancesbutthemeasurementmaybeaffectedby
externalsourcesoflight. In addition,thespotsize may besolarge that it encompassessurface
areasnotintendedtobemeasured.

Itis necessary to ensure thatthe sizeof thetarget is largerthan thespot size.The smallerthe
target,thecloserthedistanceshouldbe.

Emissivity
Emissivityrepresents theenergyreflectivity ofa material.Most organicmaterials and painted
oroxidizedsurfaceshaveanemissivity ofapproximately0.95. Ifpossible,masking tape orflat
blackpaintshouldbeappliedtocoverthemeasuredsurface.
Waitaperiodoftimetoallowthetapeorpainttoreach
thermalequilibriumwiththesurface
ofthecoveredobject.Measurethetemperatureofthesurfacecoveredwithtapeorpaintonly
afterequilibriumhasbeenachieved.
HighLowLimits
TheHI/LOlimitsprovideanalarmwhenapresettemperatureisexceeded.
LensCover
Thelenscoverprotectsthelensfromdustwhenthemeterisnotinuse.Alwaysclosethecover
whenstoringthemeter.
MeasurementNotes
1. Theobjectundertestshouldbelargerthanthespot(target)sizecalculatedbythefieldof
viewdiagram.
2. Ifthesurfaceoftheobjectundertestiscoveredwithfrost,oil,grime,etc.,cleanbefore
takingmeasurements.
3. Ifanobject'ssurfaceishighlyreflectiveapplymaskingtape
orflatblackpainttothesurface
beforemeasuring.
4. Themetermaynotmakeaccuratemeasurementsthroughtransparentsurfacessuchas
glass.
5. Steam,dust,smoke,etc.canobscuremeasurements.
6. Themetercompensatesfordeviationsinambienttemperature.Itcan,however,takeupto
30minutesforthe
metertoadjusttoextremelywideambienttemperaturechanges.
7. Tofindahotspot,aimthemeteroutsidetheareaofinterestthenscanacross(inanupand
downmotion)untilthehotspotislocated.
8. Whenthemeterisheldattheoptimumdistancefromthetarget,
thesinglelaserdotwill
appearatthetopofthecircularlasertarget.Aslongasthesinglelaserdotiswithinthe
circularlasertarget,themeterwillmakeanaccuratemeasurement.

Maintenance
Cleaning
Tocleanthelensusecompressedairtocleardustandotherparticles,thencarefullycleanwitha
wetcottonswab.Thecottonswabshouldbemoistenedwithcleanwater.
Tocleanthemeterhousing,wipewithadamp,softcloth.Donotusesolventsorabrasives.Do
notimmersethe
IR300UVinwaterorotherliquid.
ReplacingBatteries
Whenthebatteryiconindicatesalowbattery,orwhenthemeter
doesn’tswitchON,replacethebatteries.
Thebatterycompartmentlidislocatedontherearofthehandle.
RemovetheonePhilipsheadscrewandliftthelidoff.
Replacethethree1.5VAAbatteriesfollowingcorrectpolarityand
then
replaceandsecurethebatterycompartmentlid.
BatterySafetyNotes:Pleasedisposeofbatteriesresponsibly;neverdisposeof
batteriesinafire,batteriesmayexplodeorleak.Ifthemeterisnottobeused
for60daysormore,removethebatteryandstoreseparately.Donotmix
batterytypesorfreshnesslevels;pleaseusebatteriesof
thesametypeandofthesamefreshnesslevel.
Neverdisposeofusedbatteriesorrechargeablebatteriesinhouseholdwaste.
Asconsumers,usersarelegallyrequiredtotakeusedbatteriestoappropriatecollectionsites,the
retailstorewherethebatterieswerepurchased,orwhereverbatteriesaresold.
Disposal:Donot
disposeofthisinstrumentinhouseholdwaste.Theuserisobligatedtotakeendoflife
