2. START UP
CONNECTING THE AC POWER ADAPTER
Connect the supplied AC power adapter to the dedicated
socketontherearoftheinstrument.Then,plugitintoawall
socket.
Warning: Use only thesuppliedadapter,oranadapter sug
gested by Korg. Other adapters may look similar, but they
maydamageyourinstrument!
TURNING THE INSTRUMENT ON AND OFF
Turningthepoweron
•Pressthe power button() locatedon the upperright
sideofthefrontpanel.
The startup screen will appear in the LCD, and after a
time it will display the main page in Style Play mode
andtheunitwillbereadyforsoundoutput.
Turningthepoweroff
•Pressthe pow

sideofthefrontpaneltoturnoffthepower.
Warning: When turning the instrument off, all data con
tainedinRAM(avolatilememory,usedforSongediting)will
be lost. On the contrary, data contained in the SSD disk (a
nonvolatilememo
ry,usedforFactoryandUserdata)willbe
preserved.
Note: Never turn off the power while the SD card data is
beingreadorwritten.

Controlling the Volume
ABOUT THE AUTO POWER-OFF FUNCTION
With the factory settings,this instrument will automatically
poweroffwhenfourhourshavepassedsinceyoulastplayed
thekeyboardorusedthebuttons.Ifdesired,youcanturnoff
(disable)thisfunction.
The power will also turn off automatically after four hours
passwithonlysongsordemosongsbeingplayed.
To adjustpowe
ron/offsettings, pressthe [GLOBAL] button
to enter the GLOBAL page, and adjust the settings on the
Page1Gen.Controlspage.
CONTROLLING THE VOLUME
•UsetheMASTERVOLUME
slider to control the overall
volume of the instrument.
This slider controls the vol
ume of the sound going to
theinternalspeakers,
the L/MONO & RIGHT
OUTPUTS, and the HEAD
PHONESconnector.
Note:Startatamoderatelevel,
thenraisetheMASTERVOLUMEup.Don’tkeepthevolume
atanun
comfortablelevelfortoolong.
•Usethe ACC/SEQ VOLUMEslider to control the Style
tracks (drums, percussion, bass…) volume. This slider
also controls both of the Sequencers tracks, excluding
theRealtime(Keyboard)tracks.
•Bydefault, you can use the ASSIGN.SLIDERto control
the keyboard tracks volume. This slider is userassign
able,butissettoth
eKeyboardExpressionparameterby
default.
THE BALANCE SLIDER
The BALANCE slider sets the relative volume of the two
onboardsequencers(Sequencer1andSequencer2).
•Move it fully left to set Sequencer 1 to the maximum
levelandSequencer2tozero.
•Move it fully right to set Sequencer 1 to zero and
Sequencer2tothemaximumlevel.
•Moveittothece
nterto
setbothSequencersatthesame
level.
Note:Whenturningtheinstrumenton,movethisslidertothecen
ter,toavoidstartingaSongattheminimumlevel.
HEADPHONES
Youcanconnectapairofheadphonestotherearpanelhead
phone jack (PHONES: stereo minijack). You can use head
phoneswithanimpedanceof16–200Ω(50Ωrecommended).
AUDIO OUTPUTS
Youcansendthesoundtoanexternalamplificationsystem,
instead of theinternal speakers.Thisis useful whenrecord
ing,orwhenplayinglive.
AUDIO INPUTS
You can connect the output of another electronic musical
instrument,anunpoweredmixer,oranyaudiodevicetothe
rearpanelinputjack(INPUT:stereominijack).Sincethisisa
linelevelinput,youʹllneedtouseaseparatelysoldmicpre
ampormixerifyouʹreconnectingamic.
Usetheconnecteddev
ice’svolumecontroltoadjusttheinput
level.Becarefulnottomakeitdistort(or“clip”).Hereishow
tosetthevolumeoftheconnecteddevice:
•ifthesoundheardonmicroARRANGER’soutputsistoo
low, you should increase the output level of the con
necteddevice.
•ifitsou
ndsfi
ne,it’sok.
•ifitdistorts,youshouldlow erthelevelalittle,untilthe
soundsisfineagain.
MIDI CONNECTIONS
You canplaytheinternalsoundsofyourmicroARRANGER
with an external controller, i.e. a master keyboard, a MIDI
guitar,awindcontroller,aMIDIaccordion,oradigitalpiano.
1. Connect a standard MIDI cable from the MIDI OUT of
your controllerto theMIDI INconnectoronthe micro
ARRANGER.
2. Select a transmission MIDI channel on your controller.
Some controllers, like the MIDI accordions, usually
transmitonmorethanonechannel.
3. On the microARRANGER, select the MIDI Setup that
bestfitsyourcontrollerstype.
DAMPER PEDAL
ConnectaDamper(Sustain)pedaltotheDAMPERconnector
on the back panel. Use a KORG PS1, PS3 or DS1H foot
switchpedal,oracompatibleone.
DEMO
ListentothebuiltinDem oSongstoappreciatethepow erofthe
microARRANGER.Thereare16DemoSongstochoosefrom.
1. Press the STYLE PLAY and SONG PLAY buttons
together.TheirLEDsstartblinking.
Atthispoint,ifyoudon’tpressanyotherbutton,allthe
DemoSongswillbeplayedback.
2. Choose a page using the PAGE buttons. Therearetwo
differentpagesintheDemomode.
3. SelectaDemoSongbypressingthecorrespondingVOL
UM
E/VALUEbuttonaroundthedisplay.TheDemowill
automaticallystart.
4. StoptheDemobypressingSTART/STOP.

1 Power switch ( )
ThisturnsthemicroARRANGERʹspoweronoroff.
2 MASTER VOLUME
This slider controls the overall volume of the instrument,
bothoftheinternal speakers,the L/MONO andRIGHTout
puts,andtheHEADPHONESoutput.
Warning:Atthemaximumlevel,withrichsoundingSongs,Styles
or Programs, the internal speakers could distort during signal
peaks.Shouldthishappen,lowertheMasterVolumealittle.
3 ACC/SEQ VOLUME
Thisslidercontrolstheaccompanimenttracksvolume(Style
Play mode) or the Song tracks volume, excluding the Real
time tracks (Song and Song Play modes). This is a relative
control,wheretheeffectivemaximumvalueisdeterminedby
theMASTERVOLUMEsliderposition.
4 ASSIGN.SLIDER
Thisisafreelyprogrammableslider.Bydefault,itactsasthe
Keyboard Expression control, to let youbalancethe relative
volumeoftheRealtime(Keyboard)tracks.
5 MODE section
Each of these buttons recalls one of the operating modes of
theinstrument.Eachmodeexcludestheothers.
STYLEPLAY Style Play mode, where you can play Styles
(automaticaccompaniments)and/orplayupto
fourRealtimetracksonthekeyboard.
In the main page, Realtime (Keyboard) tracks
areshownontherighthalfofthedisplay.Yo

canreachthemainpagebypressingEXITfrom
anyoftheStylePlayeditpages.Ifyouareina
different operating mode, press STYLE PLAY
to recall the Style Play mode. If the TRACK
SELECT LED is on, press TRACK SELECT to

SONGPLAY Song Play mode, where you can playback 16
trackSongsinStandardMidiFile(SMF)format
directly from the memory card. You can also

equipped with two se
quencers, you can even
playtwoSongsatthesametime,andmixthem
withtheBALANCEslider.
In addition to the Song tracks, you can play
one to fourRealtime (Keyboard) tracks, along
with the Song(s). In the main page, Realtime
(Keyboard) tracks are shown on the right half
ofthedisplay.Yo
ucanreachthema
inpageby
pressing EXIT from any ofthe Song Play edit
pages.Ifyouareinadifferentoperatingmode,
press SONG PLAY to recall the Song Play
mode. If the TRACK SELECT LED is on or
flashing,pressTRK SELECT one or twotimes

kingSequencemode,whereyoucanrecord
a new Song based on the Realtime and Style
tracks,andsaveitasanewStandardMIDIFile.
SONG Songmode,whereyoucanplay,record,oredit
aSong.
PROGRAM Programmode,toplaysingleSoundPrograms
onthekeyboard,oredi
tthem.
Press the STYLE PLAY and SONG PLAY but
tons together to select the Demo mode. This
mode lets you listen to some Demo Songs, to
let you hear the sonic power of the microAR
RANGER.
6GLOBAL
This button recalls the Global edit environment where you
canselectvariousglobalsettings.Thiseditenvironmentover
lapsanyoperatingmode,whichwillstillremainactiveinthe
background.PressEXITtogobacktotheunderlyingoperat
ingmode.
7 SD CARD
ThisbuttonrecallstheCardeditenvironment,whereyoucan
executevariousoperationsonfilesandcards(Load,Save,For
mat,etc…).Thiseditenvironmentoverlapsthecurrentoper
atingmode,whichwillstillrem a in activeinthebackground.
PressEXITtogobacktotheunderlyingoperatingmode.

8 MEMORY (TIE)
ThisbuttonturnstheLowerandChordMemoryfunctionson
oroff.Gotothe“Page24‐Preferences:controls”editpageto
decide if this button should be a Chord Memory only, or a
Lower/Chord Memory button. When it works as a Lower/
ChordMemory:
ONThesoundtotheleftofthesplitpoint,andthe
chord for the automatic accompaniment, are
kept in memory even when you raise your
handfromthekeyboard.
OFF The sound andchords arereleasedas soon as
youraiseyourhandfromthekeyboard.
ThisbuttondoublesasaTIEfunctionfortheSongmode.
9 BASS INV. (REST)
ThisbuttonturnstheBassInversionfunctiononoroff.
ON
The lowest note of a chord played in inverted
formwillalwaysbedetectedastherootnoteof
thechord.Thus,youcanspecifytothearranger
compositechordssuchasAm7/Gor“F/C”.
OFF The lowest note is scanned together with the
other chord notes, and is not always consid
eredastherootnote.
ThisbuttondoublesasaRESTfunctionfortheSongmode.
10 MAN. BASS
ThisbuttonturnstheManualBassfunctiononoroff.
Note:WhenyoupresstheMAN.BASSbutton,theBasstrackvol
ume is automatically set to the maximum value. The volume is
automaticallysetbacktotheoriginalvaluewhentheMAN.BASS
buttonisdeactivated.
ON The automatic accompaniment stops playing
(apart for the Drum and Percussion tracks),
and you can manually play the Bass track on
the Lowerpart of the keyboard. You can start
the automatic accompaniment againby press
ingoneoftheCHORDSCANNINGbuttons.
OFF The bass track is automatically played by the
Style.
11 SPLIT POINT (<)
Keep this button pressed to open the Split Point window.
Whilethiswindowisopen,youcansetthesplitpointsimply
byplayingthesplitpointnoteonthekeyboard.Then,release
theSPLITPOINTbutton.
Tomemorizetheselectedsplitpointnote,presstheGLOBALbut
ton,thenpressWRITEtosavetheGlobalsettingsintomemory.
This buttondoublesas aPREVIOUS EVENTfunction for
theBackingSequenceandSongmodes.
12 G.QUANTIZE (>)
Press this button to open the Groove Quantize window,
where you can select a realtime groove quantization to be
appliedtotheSong(onlySequencer1).
This button doubles as a NEXT EVENT function for the
BackingSequenceandSongmodes.
13 TEMPO (= LOCK)
ThisbuttonturnstheTempoLockfunctiononoroff.
ON When you select a different Style or Perfor
mance, the tempo doesn’t change. You can still
changeitusingtheDIALortheTEMPObuttons.
OFF When you select a different Style or Perfor
mance, the memorized tempo value is auto
maticallyselected.

ThisbuttonturnstheSingleTouchfunctiononoroff.
ON When a different Style (or the same again) is
selected,aSingleTouchSetting(STS1)isauto
matically selected, meaning that the Realtime
tracks and effects will change, together with
theStyletracksandeffects.
OFF WhenyouselectadifferentStyle(orthe same
again),theStyletracksandeffectsarechanged,
whiletheRealtimetracksarenotchanged.
15 STYLE section (NUMERIC KEYPAD)
UsethesebuttonstoopentheStyleSelectwindowandselect
aStyle.See“SelectingaStyle”onpage 14.
Theleftmostbuttonletsyouselecttheupperorlowerrowof
Stylebanks.Pressituntilyou’veselectedtherowyou’ relook
ing for. (After both LEDs have turned on, press the button
againtoturnthemoff).
UPPERLEDON
UpperrowStylesselected.
LOWERLEDON
LowerrowStylesselected.
A word about Style banks and names. Styles from “8/16
BEAT” to “WORLD 3”, andfrom“LATIN1” to “TRAD”are
standard Styles, the user can’t normally overwrite with a
Loadoperation.
“DIRECT SD” Styles are Styles di
rectly accesse
d from the
memorycard(noneedtoloadfromcard).
Styles from “USER1” to “USER3” are locations where you
canloadnewStylesfromthememorycard.
Eachbutton(Stylebank)contains2pages,eachwithupto8
Styles.BrowsethroughtheStylesusingthePAGEbuttons.
Thereisashortcut
tosee theoriginalbankforaStyle.
You
canseetheoriginalbankwhereaStyleiscontained.Justkeep
theSHIFTbuttonpressed,andthenpressthelefmostbuttonof
the STYLE section. A messagewindow will appear, showing
thenameoftheoriginalbank.ReleasetheSHIFTbutton toexit
thewindow.
Thereisashortcuttoseeallpagesoftheselectedbank.To
cycle all pages for a selected bank, press the banks button
untilyouseethepagethatyourelookingfor.
Thesebuttonsdoubleasa
numerickeypad
oncertainpages.
16 FADE IN/OUT
When the Style stopped, press this button to start it with a
volumefadein(thevolumegoesfromzerotothemaximum).
WhentheStyleisplaying,pressthisbuttontostopitwitha
volumefadeout(thevolumegraduallydecreases).
Youdon’tneedtopressSTART/STOPtostart orstoptheStyle.
17 VARIATION 1–4 (NOTE LENGTH) buttons
Eachofthesebuttonswillselectoneofthefourvariationsof
the current Style. Each variation can vary in patterns and
sounds.
ThesebuttonsdoubleasaNOTELENGTHfunctionforthe
Songmode.
18 FILL 1–2 (NOTE LENGTH) buttons
Thesetwobuttonstriggerafillin.Pressthemtwice(LEDblink
ing)toletthemplayinloop,andselectanyotherStyleelement
(Fill,Intro,Variation)toexittheloop.
They also double as a NOTE LENGTH function for the
Songmode.

This is a doublefunction button, acting in a different way
dependingontheStylestatus(stop/play).
TapTempo:WhentheStyleisnotplaying,youcan“beat”the
tempo on this button.At the end,the accompaniment starts
playing,usingthe“tappedin”tempo.
Reset:Whenyoupressthisbuttonwhilethe Styleisinplay,
theSt
ylepatterngoesbacktothepreviousstrongbeat.
ThisbuttondoublesasanINSERTfunctionfortheBacking
SequenceandSongmodes.
Itisalsousedtoinsertacharacteratthecursorposition,dur

25 WRITE/CARD IN USE
InStylePlaymode,thisbuttonopenstheWritewindow,that
letsyousaveallthetracksontoaPerformance,theRealtime
(Keyboard) tracks in a Single Touch Setting (STS), or the

Chords are detected on the full keyboard
range. You must always play three or more

OFF No chords will be detected. After pressing

40 KEYBOARD MODE section
These buttons define how the four Keyboard (or Realtime)
tracksarepositionedonthekeyboard.
SPLIT The Lower track plays below the split point,
whiletheUpper1,Upper2andUpper3tracks
play above it. By default, selecting this key
board mode automatically selects the Lower
chordscanningmode.
FULLUPPER
The Upper 1, Upper 2 and/or Upper 3 tracks
playonthewholekeybo
ardrange.TheLower
track does not play. By default, selecting this
keyboard mode automatically selects the Full

Theinstrumentisequippedwithtwosequencers(Sequencer
1 and Sequencer 2), each with its own set of transport con
trols.
<<and>> Rewind and Fast Forward commands. If you
usethemwhiletheSongisinplay,theymakeit
scrollbackorforward.
When pressed once, these buttons move the
Song to the previous or follo
wing measure.
Whenkeptpressed,theymaketheSongscroll
continuously,untilyoureleasethem.
In Jukebox mode (Sequencer 1), keep
theSHIFTbuttonpressed,andpressthesebut
tons to scroll to the previous or next Song in
theJukeboxlist.
PAUSE Pauses the Song at the current position. Press

PLAYING ON THE KEYBOARD
Justplayon thekeyboard.YouwillheartheRealtimetracks
playing. There are four Realtime tracks: Upper 1–3 and
Lower. They may play all at the same time,or just oneor a
few of them, depending on their Mutestatus.Ifyoucannot
hearatrack,checkthemutestatusofthatpart.

SELECTING A PERFORMANCE
APerformanceisasetofProgramsandsettingsfortheKey
boardandStyletracks,thatmakesselectingcomplexcombi
nationslivefastandeasy.WhentheSTYLECHANGELEDis
on,aPerformancecanalsoselectadifferentStyle.
It is always advisable to use Performances, rather than single
Programs,whenplayingevenasolosound,sinceaPerformance
lets you select the right effects, transposition, plus many other
parameters,togetherwiththePrograms
.
Other“performance”parametersaresavedintheGlobal.
1. Press the PERFORM button. This
changes the PROGRAM/PERFOR
MANCEsectionintoaPerformance
selector.
2. Use the leftmost button of the PROGRAM/PERFOR
MANCE section to select the first row of ten banks (1–
10, upper LED turned on), or the second row of ten
banks(11–20,lowerLEDturnedon).

Note: To assign different Programs to the Style tracks, press
TRACK SELECT to see the Style tracks. If you select a Program

Programwillbeassignedtothelastselectedtrack.
Each Style Element (Variations, Fills…) can have different
Programs, so your selection might be automatically reset
whenselectingadifferentElement.

(Automatic Accompaniment)
A Stylewill be your virtual band for your best solos. Select
oneofthe304Styleswefittedinthismachine…
1 OK, select your favorite musical Style.
Thereareplenty ofStylestochoosefrom.Wewillgowitha
JazzStyle—the“JazzBrush”.
1. SelectthesecondrowofStyles.PresstheleftmostSTYLE
buttontoswitchthelowerLEDon.
2. Now, you are free to press button number 4, called
“JAZZ1”.
TheStyleSelectwindowappears.
3. Press one of the A VOLU
ME/VALUE buttons to select
“JazzBrush”.
2 Call an Intro.
You can engage an Intro to be played before the Style.Press
INTRO1 or INTR O 2 . The former plays more freely, without
lettingyoud e cidethechords.Thelatterletsyouplayachord
progressionwhileit’splaying.
3 Start the Style!
Playachord,andpresstheSTART/STOPbutton.
Thenbeginplaying.
Usually (when the SPLIT LED is on) chords are recognized
underthesplitpoint,i.e.ontheLowerpartofthekeyboard.
With the UPPERor FULL Chord Scanning mode,you must
playthreeormorenotestohaveachordrecognized.
4 Play your chords and your melody.
Go on playing. As you may notice, the microARRANGER
features a very sophisticated chord recognition engine.Rec
ognizedchordsareshowninthedisplay.
5 Make a break—or should we say “a fill”?
Duringyourplaying,youarefreetocallaonebarbreak.Try
it:

Anending isinstantaneously called,andwillbeginplaying,
toleadtheStyletoacolorfulend.Asusual,ENDING1ispre
programmed,while ENDING2asks foryourchordprogres
sion.

2 Play a chord on the keyboard.

3 Stop the Style using your chosen method.

WhenyouturnthemicroARRANGERon,Performance11is
automaticallyselected.
ThissetstheRealtime(Keyboard)tracksforyou.Inthiscase
yougettheUpper1trackplayingonthefullkeyboardrange,
withtheGrandPianoProgramselected.
As you may know, there are four available Realtime tracks:
Upper 1–3 and Lower. Upper Realtim
e tracks may play on
the full range of the keyboard (the selected KEYBOARD
MODE shall be FULL UPPER). Otherwise, the Lower track
plays on the left of the Split Point, and the Upper tracks on
theright(KEYBOARDMODEshallbeSPLIT).
If you are not satisfied with this setting at startup, yo
u can
simplyselectanotherPerformance.Orchangethetrack’sset
tings—as you will see in this tutorial—and save them into
Performance11.Youllsoonseehowtodoit.
2 Select a different Performance.
IsthePERFORM.LEDon?
Ifso,pressoneofthePROGRAM/PERFORMANCEbuttons,
andselectaPerformancewiththeVOLUME/VALUEbuttons
(onthesideofthedisplay).
Go ahead and try out the different Performances. We pro
vided160ofthemforyou.
3 Select Performance 1-1 (“Grand Piano”) again.
As above: press Performance bank 1, and use the A VOL
UME/VALUEbuttonstoselectPerformance11.

4 Unmute the Upper 2 track.
Press both F VOLUME/VALUE buttons.
The Upper 2 track will be selected and
unmuted. The Play icon will appear, sur
roundedbythe“selectedtrack”frameand
accompanie d bythepointingarrow.YouwillheartheDarkPad
ProgramplaytogetherwiththeGrandPiano.
5 Press SPLIT on the KEYBOARD MODE section,
and play.
Now,thekeyboardissplitintwoparts:theLowerpartonthe
left,andtheUpperpartontheright.TheAnalogStrProgram
isplayingontheLowerpart,whiletheGrandPianoandthe
DarkPadareplayingontheUpperpart.
6 Set the split point.
Not happy with the current split point? Keep the SPLIT
POINTbuttonhelddown,andplaythenewsplitpointonthe
keyboard.Youcanevensavethissettinginmemory.
7 Mute/unmute various tracks.
Press both H VOLUME/VALUE buttons. You will mute the
Lowertrack.
PressthemagaintounmutetheLowertrack.
Try also with the Upper tracks, using the E, F and G VOL
UME/VALUE buttons. You will notice the sound becomes
more or less fullersounding, depending on the number of
tracksmutedorunmuted.
8 Set the relative volume of the Realtime tracks.
Use each E–H VOLUME/VALUE button pair to set the vol
ume of the Realtime tracks. Press one of the VOLUME/
VALUE button to select a track. Thenpress the right one to
increasethevolume,theleftonetolowerit.
9 Press FULL UPPER on the KEYBOARD MODE
section, and play.
Again, the Upper tracks can play across the full keyboard
range.
10 Save your track configuration in a Perfor-
mance.
That’sall!Whenyoufindtherightsound,youcanpressthe
WRITE button to save the track configurationinto a Perfor
mance,aSingleTouch Setting(STS),ora StylePerformance.
ThePerformanceisahandywaytosaveRealtimetracks.
