Preparation instructions for P 700 IQ-solutions
5
1 General section
1.1 Intended use
The following provisions describe the preparation of all standard, reagent and cleaning
solutions that are required for operating the P 700 IQ Orthophosphate Analyzer.
Each P 700 IQ Analyzer must only be operated with the specified standard, reagent and
cleaning solutions in order to ensure its proper function and measurement accuracy.
To do so, use either the WTW original solutions, or the solutions prepared according to the
preparation instructions stated here at your own responsibility. The use of solutions with a
different composition invalidates any guarantee or warranty claim for the P 700 IQ Analyzer.
1.2 Important prerequisites for the quality assurance of solutions
To operate the P 700 IQ Analyzer correctly, specific quality criteria are required such as
those also guaranteed by original solutions offered by WTW:
Qualification of the producer:
The producer must be technically skilled in dealing with chemicals (in this case especially
with acid (sulfuric acid) and lyes), in their handling, proper storage and disposal.
Certification:
The producer must be capable of accordingly checking the solutions prepared in
conformance with the specified preparation instructions. To do so, the producer must
possess at least one certificate based on ISO 9001. For the preparation of standard
solutions, the producer must be able to furnish a certificate of traceability to secondary
material in accordance with NIST or PTB.
If these certificates cannot be furnished, this will invalidate any claim for guarantee or
warranty claim in regard to the measuring accuracy for the P 700 IQ Analyzer and the shelf
life and long-term shelf life of the prepared solutions.
Change service:
The producer or the customer of the producer vouchsafes the accuracy of this document
which is subject to the WTW change service. If there a change, the newest version must be
used.
Labeling:
In the preparation instructions, templates are specified for the corresponding labels for the
containers, where safety features for hazardous substances etc. (international
markings/hazardous substance symbols, H+P statements) are already taken into account.
Label templates in the form of a file are available from WTW on request.
WTW does not allow solutions prepared by other producers to be sold under the name of
WTW. The producer or his customer appears here as the manufacturer of these solutions.
He marks the containers with the solutions accordingly with his manufacturer ID/address.
Should names and/or order numbers of solutions be changed, when the P 700 IQ Analyzer is
delivered, a corresponding list must be published on a separate supplementary sheet as the
original solutions are cited in the supplied operating manuals.
Preparation instructions for P 700 IQ-solutions
6
Safety datasheets (MSDS)
Safety datasheets (MSDS) for the original solutions are available from WTW. These must be
adapted to the special circumstances as necessary at your own responsibility. Editable
templates are available from WTW on request.
Containers, container volumes
Solutions with hazardous substances must be filled into containers that have the
corresponding approval for these substances. WTW keeps appropriate empty containers
ready for this, which can be ordered from WTW. It must also be ensured that the lid sets in
the P 700 IQ Analyzer are compatible with the containers.
The container sizes for the individual solutions are limited due to the space in the P 700 IQ
Analyzer and must not therefore vary from the original sizes. The container sizes are thus
also a guarantee
- that the usage counters (software) of the P 700 IQ Analyzer function correctly
- that the overall weight of the P 700 IQ Analyzer is not exceeded.
If alternative containers are used, the above-mentioned requirements on approval, volumes
and compatibility for the lid sets must be guaranteed by the customers/producers.
1.3 Chemicals and purity specifications
Always use all chemicals in the specified purity (as a rule p. A.). Impure chemicals can falsify
the measured result of the P 700 IQ Analyzer.
Note
For some substances we mention a source of supply as well as the purity grade. The
relevant solution was developed and tested by WTW using these chemicals. With these
solutions, the P 700 IQ Analyzer fulfills all specifications in regard to measuring accuracy. If
you want to use base substances from another manufacturer, pay special attention to the
corresponding purity.
1.4 Storage, shelf life, transport
Shelf life and lifespan are primarily conditional on the quality and purity of the base
substances and the container. If the requirements are fulfilled according to the preparation
instructions stated here, the shelf lives specified there also apply.
During transport and (intermediate) storage, the temperature ranges in particular and other
conditions must be adhered to, otherwise damage or limitation of the lifespan can result.
Frost in particular or significant overheating can lead to damage of the solutions and/or the
containers. The temperature data specified in the preparation instructions apply.
The international and national transport regulations must be taken into account for transport.

Testing
The quality of the prepared phosphate phosphor standard solutions should be checked using
a suitable measuring system
1
. The measuring system and the calibration standard must be
prepared for this as per Chapter 2.1. Calibrating with traceable standards ensures the
traceability to reference material by the NIST/PTB.
The standard solution is checked using a suitable measuring system
The presence of chloride must also be checked (qualitative testing for the use of
added hydrochloric acid).
1
Accuracy ≤ 1 % (deviation of the measuring system)
Preparation instructions for P 700 IQ-solutions
9
The testing of the added hydrochloric acid is carried out quantitatively via the pH
value. To do this, an indicator rod is brought into contact with the prepared standard
solution and the pH value read on a corresponding scale.
Testing for PO4-P
3 representative samples each per PO4-P calibration standard and PO4-P test solution must
be added to the measuring system to test for PO4-P. The samples must not remain in the
open glass beaker for a long time. Concentration of the sample due to evaporation can be
avoided by covering it (e.g. with parafilm).
- Measuring the 3 calibration standards: If the resulting standard deviation is <1.0 %,
the test can be continued. Otherwise repeat or find the cause of the deviations.
- Measuring the 3 test solutions: If the resulting standard deviation is <1.0 % and the
arithmetic mean of the three measurements is less than 2.0 % from the target value
2
,
the tested sample corresponds to the requirements and testing can be continued.
Otherwise repeat or find the cause of the deviations.
- Save and archive the test data for the calibration standards and test solutions.
- Use for further testing.
Testing for chloride
Qualitative testing only (e.g. photometric or titrimetric)
Testing the pH value:
A representative sample of the test solution is taken for the pH test. The sample must not
remain in the open glass beaker for a long time. Concentration of the sample due to
evaporation can be avoided by covering it (e.g. with parafilm).
- Immerse indicator rods in the test solution and read the pH value on the associated
scale.
- The pH value must be in the range of 2.0 ±0.5.
- Save and archive the test data for the test solution.
Using the test solution:
- Only if the above criteria are fulfilled may the test solution be re-utilized for
production. Otherwise this formulation must be discarded.
Filling
After passing the test, at least 1000 mL of the standard solution is poured into the approved
containers and sealed tight with the associated closure (containers as per Chapter 5.1).
The containers are provided with the corresponding labels (see Chapter 5.2)
Shelf life
A shelf life as per Table 2-2 can be warranted for the solutions prepared in this way. It is
printed with the label (see Chapter 5.2) on the containers in MM.YY format.

Storage:
A shelf life for the cleaning solution as of production according to Table 2-2 is specified, from
which the shelf life data on the label of the respective container is derived.
For storage prior to use (transport, distribution center), a storage temperature of +5 °C…25
°C is recommended. Brief heating during this time to 35 °C is not a problem. In the worst
case, irreversible damage from precipitates or even frost damage can occur below 5 °C.
For subsequent use, depending on the weather, temperatures of +15 °C…+45 °C are
obtained in the P 700 IQ which is why the labeled shelf life date continues to be valid without
restriction.
Storage times must be limited to max. 6 months in order to safeguard corresponding usability
for the user.
