Introduction
Magenta’sVoyagerseriesisamodularvideoextensionsystem.Itisfieldconfigurabletohandleawidevariety
ofdigitalandanalogvideoformats,extendingtheirreachusingreadilyavailableITgradefiberopticcable.
ThesystemisbasedonastandardizedVoyagerCOREmodule,whichprovidestheprimaryimageprocessing
andfiberopticlinkfunctionality.TotheCORE,anoptionalVIDEOand/orAUXmodulecanbeeasilyattached.
VIDEOmodulesareofferedindifferentmodels,supportingdigitalandanalogvideoformatsatvirtuallyany
resolutionorrefreshrate.TheAUXmoduleaddssupportforserialRS232,analogstereoaudio,and
IR(remote
control)signalextensionaswell.Voyagerextensiontechnologycurrentlysupportsthesesignaltypes:
Video
o HDMI&DVIdigitalvideo.
o VGA(RGB+HV)analogvideo.
o Composite,component,andY/C(SVideo)formats.
Audio
o EmbeddedHDMIaudiostreams(8channels).
o Stereolinelevelanalogaudio.

TheVoyagervideoextensiontechnologycanbeusedinpointtopointapplicationsandavarietyofswitched,
distributedanddaisychainedapplicationsaswell.
Note: The IR capability is designed into the hardware, but not currently supported by the firmware. Check with Magenta
Research for applicable firmware updates.

Voyager Applications
TheVoyagerextensionproductscanbeutilizedinavarietyofsystemtopologiestosuitspecificneeds.This
includesbasicpointtopointextension,daisychainedextension,switchedvideo(byaddingaVGMatrix
switch),andautomatic2:1switchorfailoverbackup(2:1switchatreceiver).Belowaresomeexamplesof
these
configurations.PleasecontactMagentatodiscussyourspecificsystemconfiguration.
Basic HDMI-TX/RX, with RS232
ThisconfigurationexampleshowsaverybasicpointtopointextensionapplicationforHDMIvideo.Ifthe
sourcecontentisprotected(withHDCP),thenitwillremainprotectedtothelocalport,andallthewaytothe
receiver’soutput.
IfthesourceprovidesembeddedHDMIaudio,thatwillbepassed
totheremoteHDMIdisplayunmodified.
TheHDMIdigitalaudiocanalsobedrivenouttheanalogaudiojacks.
Thereisalsofullduplexserialcontrolofthedisplay.Sinceaduplex(twin)fiberisbeingusedbetweentheTX
andRXunits,thedisplayCANsendresponsesbackto
thecontrolsystem.Ifasimplex(single)fiberwereused,
thenonlyvideoandserialcanflowTOthedisplay,andnoresponsescanbereturnedtothecontrolsystem.

ThisconfigurationexampleshowsadaisychainedDUPLEXmodeextensionapplicationforHDMIvideo.Ifthe
sourcecontentisprotected(withHDCP),thenitwillremainprotectedtothelocalport,andallthewaytoeach
receiver’soutput.Notethatthe“HDCPkeylimitmayapplyinthiscase.See
theApplicationNotessection.
IfthesourceprovidesembeddedHDMIaudio,thatwillbepassedtoeachremoteHDMIdisplayunmodified.

thedisplaysareserialportaddressable,thenthedefaultserialmode(broadcasttoallreceivers)canbe
utilized.Allreturndatawillbemergedtogethersoit’simportantthatonlyonedisplayrespondatatime.If
thedisplaysarenotaddressable,thenit’spossibletomakedistinct“virtual
connections”withindividual
receivers’serialports.

HDMI with HDCP-protected content – HDCP Key limit
WhenthevideosourceisprotectedHDMIcontent(withHDCP),theremaybealimittothetotalnumberof
displaydevicesallowedforaparticularsourcedevice(PC,BluRayplayer,etc.).
ThislimitationisafunctionofthesourcedevicenottheVoyagerextension.Sometimesthelimitcanbe
aslow
as1,2or3displays.Tobecertaincheckthetechnicaldocumentationforyoursourcedevice,orconducta
benchtesttoconfirmthatyoucanindeeddrivetheactualnumberofdisplaysrequiredforyourapplication.
Notethattheabsolutemaximumnumberofdisplaysfor
HDCPprotectedcontentis127,whichisdefinedby
theHDCPcontentprotectiontechnology.Notallsourcedeviceswillsupportthismaximum.
ForvideoswitchingapplicationsusingtheVoyagerMatrixproducts,pleasecontactMagentaResearchwithany
concernsregardingHDCP“keylimits”.
Using HDMI (with HDCP-protected content) with DVI outputs
WhenthevideosourceisprotectedHDMIcontent(withHDCP),itwillstillbepossibletoviewthatprotected
contentbyusingaDVIRXmodule.MostdisplaysequippedwithonlyDVIconnectorsalsoacceptHDMIvideo.
IfthereisanydoubtregardingHDCPsupportwithinaparticulardisplaythe
bestwaytoconfirmthisisto
simplytestitfirst.
Using RS232 Serial With Daisy-Chained Receivers
ThefollowingonlyappliesiftheISAauxiliarymoduleisbeingusedwithdaisychainedreceivers:
TheVGTX2COREmodulecansendRS232serialtrafficdownstream(toreceivers)usingeither(orboth)optical
portssimultaneously.TheVGRXCOREmoduleispreconfiguredtobehaveasfollows:
Serialtraffic
receivedontheOptical1portissenttotheISA’sserialportonthisreceiver.Also,thesame
serialtrafficisimmediatelyretransmittedtotheOptical2porttothenextreceiverinthedaisychain.
SerialtrafficenteringtheISA’sserialportonthisreceiverisonly
sentupstream(totheVG2TX)onthe
Optical1port.
SerialtrafficreceivedontheOptical2portisimmediatelyretransmittedtotheOptical1port.

RS232 Port Settings and Addressable-Receiver Operation
ThedefaultRS232portsettingsare:9600baud,8databits,onestopbit,noparity(9600/8/n/1).Thebaudrate
andstopbitsettingsareconfigurableusingtheMAGuiutility.
ThedefaultbehaviorfortheISA’sRS232serialportistosimplyprovidetheequivalentofa“passthrough”
cablefrom
thetransmitterendtooneormorereceiverendpoints.Anydatacomingintothetransmitteris
broadcasttoallreceivers.Anydatafromanyreceiverissenttothetransmitter.Iftworeceiverssenddataatthe
sametimethedatawillcomeoutoftransmitterinterleaved(andeffectively
garbled).
Insomecases,theabilitytoselectivelycommunicatewithonereceiveratatimeisrequired.Toaddressan
individualreceiver,thecontrollingdeviceatthetransmitter(typicallyaPCorothercontrolsystem)must
transmitthefollowingstring:

quotes(“)arenottransmittedtotheVGTX2onlythecharactersbetweenthem.

2seconds.Ifeither
