Be sure to remove the storage battery from the main body before servicing. Inadvertent triggering of the
switch with the storage battery connected poses the danger of the motor being accidentally turned on.
1. Precautions on disassembly and reassembly
[Bold] numbers in the descriptions below correspond to item numbers in the Parts List and exploded
assembly diagram for the Models DV 14DL2 and DV 18DL2.
1. Adjust the clutch dial to “ ” with the triangle mark of the main body.
2. Removal of exterior parts
(1) Remove the Hook Ass’y [48]. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or a coin to remove Special Screw (A) M5
[59]. Then remove the Hook Ass’y [48] and Holder Spring [51].
(2) Remove the four Tapping Screws (W/Sp. Washer) D3 x 20 (Black) [3] from the front side of the body,
and then remove Cover (A) [4].
(3) First remove the Brush Cap [40], and then use a flat-blade screwdriver to pry off the Carbon Brush 5 x
6 x 11.5 [39] (where the collars are positioned). Be sure to remove the Brush Caps [40] and Carbon
Brushes 5 x 6 x 11.5 [39] on both sides.
3. Disassembly of the main unit
Remove the eleven Tapping Screws (W/Flange) D3 x 16 (Black) [56] from the main unit. While holding the
battery chamber of the Housing (A).(B) Set [41], gently open the Housing (A).(B) Set [41]. The internal
parts can then be removed in the fully assembled state or individually. All parts can be easily removed by
raising Dial Holder (B) [6]. The parts are separated into the drive unit, Click Spring [11], Armature and
Pinion Set [36], Magnet [37], Pushing Button [44], power supply unit, Shift Knob [45], and Strap (Black)
[55].
4. Disassembly of the gear unit
(1) Turn the Motor Spacer [35] counterclockwise (as viewed from the rear of the Armature and Pinion Set
[36]) until a clicking sound is heard, and then remove the Motor Spacer [35] from the Rear Case [21].
(2) Remove the Screw Set D2 x 3.5 (2 pcs.) [23] from the Rear Case [21], and then remove the Shift Arm
[22] from the Gear Box Ass’y [5]. Do not deform the Shift Arm [22] by applying excessive force.
(3) Disassembly of the deceleration mechanism
Turn Washer (B) [34] mounted in the Rear Case [21] counterclockwise to remove it.
Take out the First Ring Gear [33], Planet Gear (A) Set (4 pcs.) [32], Needle Bearing Set (4 pcs.) [31],
Pinion (B) [30], Planet Gear (B) Set (4 pcs.) [26], Pinion (C) [25], and Slide Ring Gear [27] in this order.
Then remove the Screw Set M3 x 12 (4 pcs.) [24] that connects the Front Case [10] and Rear Case
[21]. Take out Washer (A) [20], the Planet Gear (C) Set (5 pcs.) [18], Carrier [17], Ring Gear [19],
Lock Cam [16], Needle Roller Set (6 pcs.) [15], Lock Ring (A) [14], Washer (A) [13], and Pin Set (6
pcs.) [12] from the Front Case [10] in this order.
NOTE: Do not lose any small parts. Pay attention to the Needle Roller Set (6 pcs.) [15] and Pin
Set (6 pcs.) [12] in this operation.

5. Removal of the drill chuck and drive unit
(1) Attach the spindle lock jig (an accessory of special repair tool J-355) to the spindle of Front Case [10],
and then mount it in special repair tool J-355 clamped in the vise as illustrated in Fig. 1.
(2) Turn the sleeve of Drill Chuck 13VLRL-N [2] counterclockwise (as viewed from the front) to fully open
the jaws of Drill Chuck 13VLRL-N [2]. Turn the Flat Hd. Screw (A) (Left Hand) M6 x 25 [1] clockwise
and remove it. (Note that this screw is left-hand threaded.)
(3) Fit the hexagonal bar wrench (M10) into Drill Chuck 13VLRL-N [2] as illustrated in Fig. 1, and then
remove Drill Chuck 13VLRL-N [2] by turning the hexagonal bar wrench counterclockwise.
(4) Remove Dial Holder (B) [6] and the Click Spring [11] from the Front Case [10].
(5) Disassembly of the clutch mechanism
Turn the Nut [7] counterclockwise to remove it from the Front Case [10]. Take out the Spring [8],
Stopper (A) [28], and Stopper Spring [29] in this order.
NOTE: Do not disassemble the Front Case [10].
6. Disassembly of the armature unit
(1) Remove the Magnet [37] from the Armature and Pinion Set [36].
Note that the Magnet [37] has strong magnetic force. Hold the Motor Spacer [35] securely and pull it
toward the back of the Armature and Pinion Set [36] to remove.
NOTE: When removing the Magnet [37], note that the ball bearing and washer behind the
Armature and Pinion Set [36] may be attracted to the Magnet [37] and come off the
Armature and Pinion Set [36].
(2) Remove the Motor Spacer [35].
Remove the Motor Spacer [35] from the Armature and Pinion Set [36]. If the Motor Spacer [35] is too
tight to remove, push up the head of the armature shaft in the Armature and Pinion Set [36] while
holding the Motor Spacer [35].
7. Disassembly of the power supply unit
Disconnect the two soldered internal wires (red and black) coming from the Brush Block [38], and the
three soldered internal wires (red, black and white) coming from the DC-Speed Control Switch [46].
The power supply unit can now be disassembled.

Reassembly can generally be conducted by reversing the disassembly procedure. However, special
attention should be given to the following items.
1. Reassembly of the power supply unit
Perform wiring according to the wiring diagram (Fig. 2). Pay attention to the direction in which to connect
the internal wires and terminals.
(1) Crimp the internal wire (yellow) of the DC-Speed Control Switch [46] and the internal wire (black) of the
LED Holder [42] together with Connector 50091 (10 pcs.) [47].
(2) Solder the Terminal [52] and LED Holder [42] (brown internal wire for 14.4 V or red internal wire for
18 V) to the (B+) terminal of the DC-Speed Control Switch [46].
(3) Solder the Terminal [54] to the (B-) terminal of the DC-Speed Control Switch [46].
(4) Fasten the Holder Spring [51] and Terminal Piece [53] to soldered Terminals [52] and [54] with the
Tapping Screw D4 x 10 [50].
(5) Solder the internal wire (red) coming from the Brush Block [38] to the (M2) terminal, and the internal
wire (black) to the (M1) terminal of the DC-Speed Control Switch [46] (Fig. 2).
(6) When mounting the DC-Speed Control Switch [46] in housing (A), fit the protrusion of the
forward/reverse changeover lever on top of the DC-Speed Control Switch [46] into the hole groove of
the Pushing Button [44].
(7) Pass the internal wire connected to the LED light between the housing ribs.
(8) Pass the internal wire connected to the DC-Speed Control Switch [46] between the ribs.

2. Reassembly of the clutch unit
(1) Mount the Stopper Spring [29], Stopper (A) [28], Sleeve [9], and Spring [8] to the Front Case [10] in
this order (Fig. 3).
(2) Screw the Nut [7] into the Front Case [10] (Fig. 4).
Align mark (i) on the Nut [7] with mark (ii) on the Front Case [10], and then screw in the Nut [7]. Rotate
the Nut [7] about a turn clockwise to align mark (i) on the Nut [7] with mark (ii) on the Front Case [10].
At this time, confirm that the “Y” surface of the Nut [7] is almost flush with the “Z” surface of the Front
Case [10].

3. Reassembly of the gear unit
(1) Mount Washer (A) [13], Lock Ring (A) [14], and
the Lock Cam [16] to the Front Case [10].
The protrusion of Lock Ring (A) [14] aligns with
the concave portion of the Front Case [10]
(Fig. 5).
(2) Mount the Needle Roller Set (6 pcs.) [15].
NOTE : Apply grease (MOLUB-ARROY
NO. 777-1) to the inner portion of
Lock Ring (A) [14].
(3) Apply grease (Shell Alvania RL3) to the engaging portions of each gear, and the claw portion of the
Ring Gear [19].
(4) Mount the parts from the Pin Set (6 pcs.) [12] to Washer (B) [34] in order (Fig. 6).
• Pay attention to the needle mounting direction of the Ring Gear [19], Carrier [17], Slide Ring Gear
[27], Pinion (C) [25], and Pinion (B) [30] (Fig. 6).
• Mount the Front Case [10] to the Rear Case [21] so that the concave portions of the Front Case [10]
align with the protrusions of the Rear Case [21].
Fit the protrusions of Washer (B) [34] into the concave portions of the Rear Case [21], and then turn
Washer (B) [34] clockwise (as viewed from the armature) until it contacts the Rear Case [21] (Fig. 7).

4. Reassembly of the armature unit
(1) Mounting the Motor Spacer [35]
Mount the Motor Spacer [35] to the Armature and Pinion Set [36]. If mounting proves too difficult, use a
hand press to support the Motor Spacer [35] and press down on the rear end of the armature shaft of
the Armature and Pinion Set [36] (Fig. 8).
(2) Mounting the Magnet [37]
Mount the Magnet [37] to the Armature and Pinion Set [36] so that the notch of the Magnet [37] faces
the rear of the Armature and Pinion Set [36]. Hold each part securely as the Armature and Pinion Set
[36] may be attracted to the Magnet [37] by strong magnetic force.
NOTE: When mounting the Magnet [37], note that the ball bearing and washer at the rear of the
Armature and Pinion Set [36] may come off due to the strong magnetic force of the
Magnet [37].
5. Reassembly of the drive unit
(1) Fit the protrusions of the Motor Spacer [35] into the concave portions of the Rear Case [21] by
engaging the pinion of the Armature and Pinion Set [36] with Planet Gear (A) Set (4 pcs.) [32]. Turn
the assembly fully clockwise as viewed from the rear of the Armature and Pinion Set [36] (Fig. 9).

(2) Mount the Shift Knob [45] and Shift Arm [22]
(Fig. 10).
Mount the Shift Arm [22] to the cylindrical
protrusions inside the Rear Case [21]. Insert
the cylindrical protrusions of the Rear Case
[21] into the holes of the Shift Arm [22] on both
sides. Confirm that the protrusions of the Shift
Arm [22] are properly inserted into the grooves
of the Slide Ring Gear [27]. Then secure the
Shift Arm [22] onto the Rear Case [21] by
using the Screw Set D2 x 3.5 (2 pcs.) [23].
Insert the Shift Arm [22] inversely into the
groove of the Shift Knob [45] by facing the
“High” indication on the Shift Knob [45].
CAUTION: The Shift Arm [22] has a
proper mounting direction.
(3) Mount the protrusions of the Click Spring [11] to the concave portions of the Front Case [10].

6. Reassembly of the main unit
(1) Mount the V-Lock Nut M5 [49] to the Housing (A).(B) Set [41].
(2) Mount the power supply unit and drive unit that were reassembled in the procedure above to the
Housing (A).(B) Set [41]. At this time, align the protrusions of the Front Case [10] and Motor Spacer
[35] with the concave portions of the Housing (A).(B) Set [41].
(3) Mount the Pushing Button [44] into the Housing (A).(B) Set [41]. Confirm that the protrusion of the
forward/reverse changeover lever of the DC-Speed Control Switch [46] is inserted into the hole groove
of the Pushing Button [44].
(4) Mount the Strap (Black) [55] to the Housing (A).(B) Set [41].
(5) Mount the assembly reassembled in step (3) above to housing (B), and then secure it with the eleven
Tapping Screws (W/Flange) D3 x 16 (Black) [56].
(6) Mount Dial Holder (B) [6] and Cover (A) [4] on the body from its front end, and then fasten both
together with the four Tapping Screws (W/Sp. Washer) D3 x 20 (Black) [3].
(a) There is a wider concave portion among the four concave portions of the Nut [7], and a wider
protrusion among the four protrusions on the inside of Dial Holder (B) [6]. When fitting the four
concave portions to the four protrusions, fit the wider concave portion to the wider protrusion.
(b) There is a wider concave portion among the four concave portions on the outer periphery of Dial
Holder (B) [6], and a wider protrusion among the four protrusions on the inside of Cover (A) [4].
When fitting the four concave portions to the four protrusions, fit the wider concave portion to the
wider protrusion.
(7) Upon completing steps (1) to (6) above, turn the dial from "1" to the hammer mark "
" and confirm
that each digit and the mark are respectively aligned to the triangle mark of Cover (A) [4]. Also confirm
that the dial turns with adequate restraint. If the dial does not turn from "1" or the hammer mark "
"
does not align with the triangle mark of Cover (A) [4], Dial Holder (B) [6] may be improperly
assembled. Repeat disassembly and reassembly correctly as described in "2. Reassembly of the
clutch unit," "3. Reassembly of the gear unit," and "5. (1) Reassembly of the drive unit."
Confirm that the Shift Knob [45] switches normally between "HIGH" and "LOW." If the Shift Knob [45]
cannot switch the speed correctly or has no restraint, it may be assembled improperly. Repeat
disassembly and reassembly correctly as described in "3. Reassembly of the gear unit" and "5. (2)
Reassembly of the drive unit."

7. Mounting the drill chuck
Mount Drill Chuck 13VLRL-N [2] to the spindle, and then tighten the Flat Hd. Screw (A) (Left Hand) M6 x
25 [1].
8. Mounting hook
Confirm that the V-Lock Nut M5 [49] is mounted to the Hook Ass’y [48]. Mount the Hook Spring [58] and
secure it with Special Screw (A) M5 [59]. Be sure to mount the Hook Spring [58] with its larger diameter
side pointing inward toward the housing.
9. Checking lighting of the LED light
Press the trigger of DC-Speed Control switch [46] and check whether the LED light turns on. The LED
light remains on as long as you push the trigger of the DC-Speed Control Switch [46].
10. Other precautions on reassembly
After completing reassembly, confirm that the rotating direction of Drill Chuck 13VLRL-N [2] matches the
position of the Pushing Button [44]. When the Pushing Button [44] is pressed from the (R) side, the
rotating direction of Drill Chuck 13VLRL-N [2] should be clockwise (as viewed from the rear). Use the
battery to power the Model DV 14DL2 or DV 18DL2 on and off. Use a 12-mm dia. test bar to check that
runout of Drill Chuck 13VLRL-N [2] is 0.8 mm or less at a position 110 mm away from the tip of the chuck.
11. Screw tightening torque
Flat Hd. Screw (A) (Left Hand) M6 x 25 [1] : 3.29 to 4.90 N•m (40 to 50 kgf•cm)
Drill Chuck 13VLRL-N [2] : 17.6 to 21.6 N•m (180 to 220 kgf•cm)
Screw Set D2 x 3.5 (2 pcs.) [23] : 0.10 to 0.20 N•m (1.0 to 2.0 kgf•cm)
Screw Set M3 x 12 (4 pcs.) [24] : 0.5 to 1.1 N•m (5 to 11 kgf•cm)
