SETUPWIZARD
Thesetupwizardshouldonlybeused,ifyouwanttosetuptheIntellinetCPEAccessPointasaCPEforawirelessISP.
Allotheroperationalmodesaresetupwithouttheuseofthesetupwizard.Foradescriptionoftheoperationalmodes,
refertothenextsection.
Onthefirstscreenofthesetupwizardyouneedtodefinewhichwirelesssignalyouwanttoconnectto.Thatsignal
shouldbe
thewirelesssignalofyourwirelessISP.ClickonScantodisplayofalistofallavailablewirelessnetworks,
selectthenetworkofyourWISP,andthentypeinthepasswordrequiredfortheWISPintheWPAKeyfield.
YoualsoneedtoselecttheWANTypethat
iscompatibletothesettingsofyourWISP.
ThesecondscreenallowsyoutodefinethedeviceIPaddressoftheIntellinetCPEAccessPoint.Thedefaultvalueis
192.168.2.1.


ThethirdsetupwizardscreendealswiththeDHCPserverfunctionoftheIntellinetCPEAccessPoint.Whetherornot
youwillneedtousethis,willdependonyourWISP.However,itismorelikelythannot,thattheDHCPservershouldbe
disabled.Ifyoudoneedto
enabletheDHCPserver,thenyouwillneedtofillouttheIPaddressrelatedfields.
Screennumberfourletsyousetupwirelessserviceforyourlocalclients.Ifyoudisableit,thenInternetservicewillonly
beavailabletoclientsthatareconnectedtotheLANportof
theaccesspoint,eitherdirectly,orindirectlyviaaswitch.
Ifyouenablethewirelessfunction,thenyouneedtodefinetheusualwirelessparameters,suchastheSSIDandthe
securitysettings.
ClickApplytosavethesettingsandreboottheaccesspoint.


Oncetherebootiscompleted,theIntellinetCPEAccess
PointwilltrytoestablishaconnectionwiththeWISPsignal,
indicatedbythestatusConnecting.ClickRefreshafterabout
30secondsandthestatuswillhavechangedtoConnected.
Thisscreenprovidesdetailedinformationaboutthe
connectiontotheWISP
signal,anditallowstoDisconnect
andReconnecttheWISPsignalusingthecorresponding
buttons.


OPERATIONMODESWHENTOUSEWHICH
YourIntellinetCPEAccessPointsupports4operationmodes:Router(Gateway),
WISP,AccessPoint(AP)andRepeater.Beforeyoustartmakingchangestothe
configuration,youshouldfamiliarizeyourselfwiththesemodes.
ROUTER(GATEWAY)
ArouterconnectsmultiplelocalnetworkclientstooneInternetconnection,andprovidesbasicNATfirewallprotection
atthesametime.UsethismodeifyouwanttheIntellinetCPEAccessPointtofunctionasthe(wireless)routerinyour
network.Ifyouchoosethismode,youmustconnecttheWAN
portoftheaccesspointtoanetworkportthatprovides
Internetconnection,suchasaDSLorcablemodem.
SelectthecorrectWANtypeforyourISP,e.g.,PPPOEforxDSLconnections,orDHCPforcableInternetservice.Ifyou
selectPPPOE,youmustprovidetheusernameand
password,aswellasadvancedparameterssuchasMTU,LCPecho
intervalandfailure.YourDSLserviceprovidehasthisinformation.IfyourInternetserviceusesstaticIP,you’llneedto
entertheIPaddressandrelatedinformationintotheconfigurationinterface.Inmanycases,however,yourInternet
accessisestablished
bymeansofDHCP.InthiscasethereisnothingtoconfigurebuttheoptionalclonedMACaddress,
whichyouonlyneedtoenterifyourInternetservicerequiresacertainMACaddress.
TheNATfunctionshouldbeenabled,asitprovidesthebasicrouterandfirewallfunctionalityyouwould
expectfroma
router.


WISPWIRELESSISP
AwirelessInternetserviceprovider(WISP)isanInternetserviceproviderwithanetworkbasedonwireless
networking.IfyouliveinanareawhereInternetserviceisprovidedbya2.4GHzWirelessIEEE802.11nsignal,youcan
utilizetheIntellinetAccessPointasaCPE(Customerpremisesequipment).When
youactivateWISPmode,youwill
needtospecifytheSSIDoftheWISPsignal,alongwiththesecuritysettingsifsorequired.Youalsoneedtodefinehow
theconnectiontotheWISPisestablished,i.e.,DHCP,PPPoE,etc.Aftertheobligatoryreboot,theIntellinetCPE
wirelesslyconnectsto
theWISP,andalsoprovideslocalwirelessaccessinyournetwork.
ClickonScantosearchforavailablewirelesssignalsinthearea.Selectthewirelessnetwork(“wlan_ISP”inthe
exampleabove),andthechannel,securitymodeandWLANEncryptwillbefilledoutautomatically.Typeinthe
passwordfor
thewirelessnetworkinthefieldWPAKey.NotethatthisisonlyrequirediftheWISPsignalusesWPA
encryption.ShouldtheWISPsignaluseWEPencryption,theinterfacepresentsyouwithslightlydifferentfieldsthat
needtobefilledout,namelytheWEPkeytype,keyidentifierand
theactualWEPkeyfields.
LockBSSIDmakessurethattheIntellinetCPEAccessPointwillalwaysconnecttothisWISPsignal,evenifthenameof
theWISPsignalweretoeverchange.


ACCESSPOINT
ThisisthedefaultoperationmodeoftheIntellinetCPEAccessPoint.Awirelessaccesspoint(AP)isadevicethatallows
wirelessdevicestoconnecttoawirednetworkusingWiFi.Inthismode,thedeviceactsasasimplenetworkswitch
connectingwirelessandwirednetworkclients.
InordertousetheIntellinetCPEasanaccesspoint,youneedtosettheStatustoEnable,settheModeto11B/G/N
(recommended),settheChanneltoavaluethatputsthiswirelessnetworkatleast4channelsapartfromanexisting
wirelessnetworkthatmightbein
closeproximity.Forexample,ifanotherwirelessnetworkinrangeissettochannel2,
thenit’dbebesttosetyourIntellinetCPEAccessPointtochannel6orhigher.Next,providetheSSIDandsetupthe
SecurityModeforthewirelessnetwork.WPA2PSKisrecommendedasit
providesthemostrobustsecurityforyour
wirelessnetwork.
IfyouuseaRadiusserverinyournetworktoauthenticatethewireless
clients,youmustselectEnterpriseasthesecuritymode,andagainthe
WPA2variantisthepreferredchoice.IfyouselectEnterpriseencryption,
youmustprovidetheserveraddress,
portandsharedsecretkey.
Finally,youmustspecifythelocalIPaddressforyouraccesspoint.Thedefaultaddressis192.168.2.1,butyoucan
changeithereifyousodesire.Seenextpageforfurtherdetails.

REPEATER
Awirelessrepeater(alsocalledwirelessrangeextender)takesanexistingsignalfromawirelessrouterorwireless
accesspointandrebroadcastsittoamplifythewirelesssignal,extendingitsrangeintheprocess.Whenyouactivate
thismode,youneedtospecifythewirelessnetworkwhichyouwishto‘repeat’,
oramplify.Afteryouprovidethe
requiredsecurityinformation,theIntellinetCPEAccessPointperformsarestart.
ThesetupisvirtuallyidenticaltotheWISPmode.ClickScantoshowwirelessnetworksinrange,thenselectthe
wirelessnetworkthatyouwithtorepeat(extenditsrange),andprovide
therequiredsecurityforthenetwork.Similar
totheAccessPointmode,youcanalsodefinetheLocalIPSettings.SelectDHCP,andtheIntellinetaccesspointwill
receiveit’sIPsettingsfromaDHCPserverinyournetwork,mostlikelythatwillbeyourrouter,andselectStatic
ifyou
wanttocontroltheIPaddressandrelatedsettingsyourself.

ThissectionprovidesvariousbitsandpiecesofinformationaboutthecurrentstatusoftheIntellinetCPEWireless
AccessPoint.Dependingontheoperationalmodethedeviceissetto,youwillseeoneofthefourpossiblemenus
below.

WAN
IftheaccesspointisoperatinginRouter
(Gateway)mode,you
canseeinformationaboutthestatusoftheInternetconnection
onthispage,including,butnotlimitedtotheWANIPaddress
anddatatraffic.Additionalinformationcanbefoundonthe
WANpage’ssidebarinyourwebbrowser.
WISP
IftheIntellinetCPEAccess
PointisconnectedtoawirelessISP,somerelatedinformationabouttheWISP
connectioncanbeobtainedfromthisstatusscreen.RefertothehelpsidebarontheWISPinformationpage
inyourwebbrowser.
Repeater
Ifthedeviceissetupasarepeater,youcansee
informationonthecurrentconnectionstatusonthispage.
Thiscanbehelpfulifyouneedtotroubleshootapotentialproblemrelatedtotherepeaterconnection.
AccessPoint
Thisoptionisavailableregardlessoftheoperationalmodeandshowsrelatedinformationtothecurrent
wirelessfunction,suchas
theSSID,channel,securityorconnectedclients.
LAN
ThisoptionisavailableregardlessoftheoperationalmodeandshowsinformationrelevanttotheLAN
connectionstatusoftheIntellinetCPEAccessPoint,includingforexampleitsIPaddress.
DHCPServer
TheIntellinetCPEAccessPointisequipped
withaninternalDHCPserver,whichmeansitcanprovideIP
addressestoconnectedclients.Thisscreenshowswhichclientsareconnectedintotal,andofthose,which
haveobtainedanIPaddressfromtheIntellinetCPEAccessPoint.
System
Basicsysteminformation,includingfirmwareversion,hardwareversionand
systemuptime.


WIRELESSSETTINGS
ThismenuprovidesaccesstoallparametersrelatedtothewirelessfunctionoftheIntellinetCPEAccessPoint.
BASIC
Asthenamesuggests,hereyoucancontrolthebasicsettings
relatedtothewirelessfunction.Youcandefinethenameof
thewirelessnetwork(SSID),thechannel,securitysettings,
i.e.,thewirelesspassword,youcanactivatewirelessclient
isolationwhichpreventscommunicationbetweenwireless
clients,andyoucanenableordisablethebroadcastofthe
SSID.Forinformationaboutthesecuritysettings,referto
sectionOperationModesAccessPoint.
MSSID
TheIntellinetCPEcansimultaneouslybroadcastfourdifferent
wirelessnetworks(SSIDs).Eachwirelessnetworkcanhaveits
ownsettings.
MSSIDSelectletsyoudefine,whichofthethreeadditional
SSIDsyouwanttoconfigure.Onceselected,youcanproceed
settinguptheparametersthesamewayasyoudidfor
the
mainSSIDaboveunderBasic.
ACL
ACLstandardsforaccesscontrollist.Withthisfeature,you
cancontrolwhohasaccesstothewirelessnetwork,andhow
manysimultaneoususersareaallowed.Allofthiscanbe
controlledforeachofthefourSSIDsindependently.
MSSIDSelectletsyoudefine,whichofthefourSSIDsyou
wanttoconfigure.TheMaxStationparameterallowsto
defineanupperconnectionlimitfortheparticularSSID.This
canbehelpfuliftheaccesspointisinstalledinabusyareaand
youneedtoputacapontheactiveuserstoensureadecent
wirelessperformancefor
theconnectednetworkclients.

ThesecondfeatureistheACLStatus,whichallows(value“Accept”)ordisallows(value“Drop”)accessbasedonthe
MACaddressofthewirelessnetworkclient.EntertheMacAddressmanually,orclicktheRescanbuttontofindthe
MACaddressofaconnectedwirelessclientautomatically,andthenclick
AddtoaddtheMACaddresstothe
configuration.
WDS
WDS(WirelessDistributionSystem)isamethodoflinkingtwoormorewirelessaccesspointsorwirelessrouters
together,withoutphysicallyconnectingthem.WDSisasystemenablingthewirelessinterconnectionofaccesspoints
inanIEEE802.11network.Itallowsawirelessnetworktobeexpandedusingmultipleaccesspoints
withoutthe
traditionalrequirementforawiredbackbonetolinkthem,andthatsavesinstallationcost.
ButWDSisn’twithoutitsproblems.DependingontheWDSsetup,theperformancecansuffergreatly,asmuchasa
lossof50%oftransferspeedperhop(accesspointinWDSmode).Ifthroughputandlowlatencyareimportanttoyou,
thenWDS,asimplementedinnonenterpriseequipmentsuchasyourIntellinetCPEAccessPoint,isn’treallyagood
option.WDSalsosuffersfromtheproblemthatonlystaticWPAkeyscanbeused,eliminatingoneofthekeystrength
ofWPA2encrypted
wirelessnetworks.Ifsecurityisofgreatimportancetoyou,WDSisn’ttheidealmodetousefor
yourwirelessnetwork.WDSsetupsarealsorestrictedinthatonlythesameequipmentcanbeusedinthesetup.Even
otheraccesspointsfromthesamemanufacturer,Intellinetincluded,maynot
becompatibleduetothefactthatoften
differentchipsetsfromdifferentchipsetmanufacturersareused.
Availablemodes:
LazyInthismodetheaccesspointwillautomaticallyconnectwithotherWDSdevicesthatusethesameSSID,
channel,encryptionmode,andphysicalmode.Thereisnoneedtomanually
typeintheMACaddressesoftheother
WDSAPs.However,oneoftheparticipatingaccesspointsmustbesettoBridgeorBridge+mode.Theycan’tallbelazy.
BridgeThismodecanbeusedtoconnecttwonetworkstogether.AllWDSbridgesmustbesettothe
samechannel,
SSID,encryptionmodeandphysicalmode.NotethattheaccesspointinWDSBridgemodeonlycommunicateswith
otherWDSbridges,butnotwithwirelessclients.


Bridge+Thismodecanbeusedtoconnecttwonetworkstogether.AllWDSbridgesmustbesettothesamechannel,
SSID,encryptionmodeandphysicalmode.UnlikeBridgemode,theBridge+modeallowstheaccesspointto
communicatewithwirelessclientsandotherWDSbridgesatthesametime.
However,donotethatduetothe
directionalantennacharacteristicsoftheIntellinetCPEAccessPoint,theuseablewirelesssignalislimitedtoarather
narrowbeam.Thatisgoodforpointtopointconnections,butwhenyouwanttoconnectwirelessclientsthatarein
thevicinityofthe
accesspointonallsides,notjustintheareaofthebeam,itisnotanidealsolution.Insucha
situation,theuseofanOmnidirectionalantennaconnectedtotheexternalantennaconnectorwouldbe

pagemaynotappearcorrectlyforyouas
mostWiFihotspotauthenticationsolutionsrequirecapturingtheMACaddressofyourtablet,smartphoneorlaptop
whichmaynotsuccessfullypassthroughtheuniversalrepeater.ButWDS,asweheardbefore,hasitsownshareof
problems:massiveperformancepenalties,poorcompatibility

todisable,unlessyouareexperiencingtechnicaldifficultiesandwanttodisableWMMaspartofthetroubleshooting.

BeaconInterval:AwirelessaccesspointssendsoutspecificdatapacketscontainingtheSSID,thechannelnumber,and
securitysettings.Thesepacketsarecalledbeacons.Anyclientthatwantstojoin
awirelessnetworklistensforthese
beaconframes,andanywirelessclientalreadyconnectedalsoreceivesthemwhenevertheyaresentout.Thebeacon
intervalcontrolshowoftentheaccesspointbroadcaststhebeaconframes.Possiblevaluesrangefrom20to1000(ms).
Theshorterthebeaconinterval,themore
oftenarethebeaconframessentout.Themoreoftenthebeaconframes
aresentout,thequickertheassociationandroamingprocesswillbe,butitalsoleadstomorenetworkoverhead,
whichthenleadstoadropinthroughputperformance.Increasethebeaconintervaltoreducethenetworkoverhead,
butthatcomesattheexpensiveofaslightlyslowerassociationtime,whichmeansittakesjustalittlebitlongerfor
wirelessclientstojointhenetwork.Thedefaultvalueis100.
DataBeaconRate(DTIM):TheDTIM(deliverytrafficindicationmap)ratenotifiesawirelessclientwithpower

modehowmanybeaconsuntilbufferedmulticasttrafficwillbebroadcastbytheaccesspoint.ThehighertheDTIM
rate,thelongeraclientdevicemaysleepandthereforethemorepowerthatparticularclientdevicemaypotentially

valueis1,whichmakestheDTIMIntervalthesameasthe
BeaconInterval.
BGProtection:B/GProtection,shouldbesettoOn.TheB/GProtectionmodeensuresthatolderwireless802.11band
802.11gdeviceswillnotdegradetheperformanceofthemuchfasterwireless802.11nnetwork.So,ifyou
haveamix
ofolderandnewerwirelessstationsinthenetwork,it’srecommendedthatyouenabletheprotectionmechanism.
OnlyifyouknowforcertainthatyournetworkconsistsonlyofwirelessNclientsshouldyouconsiderdisablingthis
