1 Product overview

This manual is written for users of the Nevion FCS193 Advanced Element Management

System. It provides the necessary information for installation, configuration and operation

of the product.

1.1 Warnings, Cautions and Notes

The following warnings, cautions and notes are used and highlighted in this manual as

shown below:

Caution: This is a caution. Cautions give information, which if strictly followed,

will prevent damage to equipment or other goods.

Note: Notes provide supplementary information. They are highlighted for

2 Description

The FCS193-AEMS (Advanced Element Management System) is a management card for

the Nevion Ventura line cards installed in the VS101-2H and VS103 chassis.

Alarms for the chassis, cards and FCS193-AEMS are shown by the front panel LED’s. This

module allows the configuration, status monitoring and reporting of alarms for the installed

Ventura functional cards via a web browser.

The 10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet port on the FCS193-AEMS back panel is used to

manage the chassis using HTTP(S), SNMP, SSH, NTP and FTP/SFTP. An RS232 serial

port is available for local management and initial setup of the network configuration.

Firmware and software upgrades, for both installed cards and the FCS193-AEMS itself are

remotely downloadable to the element management card. Line cards that support remote

upgrade can be upgraded through the element management card.

3 Applications

The FCS193-AEMS provides monitoring for up to 9 line cards in the VS103 Chassis, or up

to 2 line cards in the VS101-2H Chassis.

The FCS193-AEMS is intended for remote configuration, performance monitoring, fault

isolation, and operation management of your Broadcast Network. This remote element

management solution allows users to access their transport networks via web server.

Problems in the network can be detected by the user and defined through alarms viewed in

the web browser. A user can view card operation status and failure conditions. History logs

are created, which can be saved for later viewing and analysis. Remote configuration can

be carried out as shown in the application diagram below.

If one of the circuits or links in your network fails, then you can verify which equipment has

been affected. A local broadcast station can monitor and manage its remote locations for

signal losses and equipment failures.

The Web-based interface provides an updated snapshot of the chassis with the status of

each front panel LED, allowing the viewing or configuration of each card. AEMS also lists

the alarms for each card or the entire chassis, and offers a highly configurable handling of

alarms at the element management level.

The SNMP interface provided by AEMS integrates with existing SNMP management

solutions such as DataMiner. AEMS sends notifications to the SNMP manager if alarm

situations occur that require corrective action.

5 System Configuration

5.1 Default console users and passwords

By default FCS193-AEMS provides three console user accounts:

 anms:Accountusedforremotelogin.

The passwords for these accounts can be changed from the console using the passwd

command:

passwd [user]

The root user can change the password for any user by adding an optional username after

the password. Other users can only change their own password.

5.2 Default Web Interface users and passwords

It is possible to enable user authentication for the FCS193-AEMS Web interface. For details

see section 5.11.2.

By default FCS193-AEMS provides three web interface user accounts:

Only users which are members of the edit group are allowed to change the configuration, if

the --edit-group option is enabled (see section 5.11.2).

The passwords for these accounts can be changed from the console by the root user using

the htpasswd command:

htpasswd -B /etc/apache2/htpasswd [user]

5.3 Default IP Setting

The FCS193-AEMS factory default IP address is 10.0.0.1.

The network configuration of the FCS193-AEMS Element Management card can be

changed via SSH or the RS232 serial port console.

Note: The default IP Address setting for the FCS193-AEMS is 10.0.0.1

The default subnet mask is set to 255.255.255.0

5.4 The Serial Port Interface

It is possible to log into a local console port on the FCS193-AEMS card through the RS232

serial port on the rear panel. Terminal emulation software should be used to access the

AEMS serial port. The serial port settings are as follows:

Session type VT100

Rate 115200 baud

Bits 8 bits

Parity / Stop No parity, 1 stop bit

Press return in the terminal emulator software. The serial port should detect the connection

and display a login message.

5.5 Logging into the FCS193-AEMS console

The FCS193-AEMS console can be accessed through SSH or through the RS232 serial port.

After connecting to the AEMS a welcome message will be displayed and a prompt to enter a

user name.

The default settings only allow the anms user to log into the console. The default password

for the anms user is password:

Username: anms

Password: password (will not be shown)

Sometimes superuser (root) permission is required, for example to change the

FCS193-AEMS Network settings. The su <enter> command can be used to change to root

user. The interface will prompt for the root password.

Password: qazxsw (will not be shown)

Note: For security reasons it is not possible to login via SSH directly as root

user. The user must log in as anms user and change to root user using the

‘su’ command.

5.6 Configure Network settings

To configure the IP settings via the command line, log in to the AEMS console using either

the serial port or SSH and become the root user (section 5.5).

1. Start the network configuration process by typing netconfig at the ‘#’ prompt.

2. Choose ‘Configure Network Configuration’ using the cursor keys and press enter.

3. Follow the instructions in the dialogue windows to enter the IP address, netmask,

hostname, domain name, gateway, NTP server and DNS server.

If the netconfig window looks unusual or you get an error message like ‘Error opening

terminal: xxxx’, make sure the terminal used is vt100 compatible.

On the last window of the netconfig dialogue the new settings can either be discarded,

applied immediately or applied after the next reboot. When applying the settings

immediately the current Ethernet connection might get lost if the IP address, gateway or

netmask have changed.

5.7 Setting Date and Time

It is recommended to use an NTP server to synchronise the system time on the

FCS193-AEMS. The NTP server can be configured from the console using the netconfig

command (see 5.6) or from the ‘Edit System Information’ page (see Figure 5). If no NTP

server is used the date and time on the system have to be set manually. This can be done

from the ‘Edit System Information’ page or from the console using the date command.

To check the current clock settings from the console, enter the date command and press

enter:

# date

Only the root user is allowed to change the date and time using the date command. The

command takes the month (MM) day (DD) hour (hh) minute (mm) century (CC) year (YY)

and seconds (ss) in the following order:

date MMDDhhmm[[CC]YY][.ss]

Example:

# date 061016292009

Tue Jun 10 16:29:00 PST 2009

To get a more complete overview of the date command enter:

# date –-help

FCS193-AEMS has a battery to maintain the clock while powered down.

5.8 Setting Time Zone

The time zone on the FCS193-AEMS system can be configured through the WEB GUI.

1. Select ‘Edit System Information’ from the left hand menu.

2. In the ‘Date and Time’ section select the desired time zone from the menu and

press ‘Save Changes’. A reboot is not required.

5.9 RADIUS authentication

For FTP, HTTP(S) and SSH (including SFTP and SCP) it is possible to select between remote

authentication using RADIUS or local authentication. The selection between local or RADIUS

authentication is done from the command console as root user using the auth-config

command. To see a full list of options for the auth-config command enter:

auth-config -h

To configure the IP address of the RADIUS server and the shared secret (password) use the

following command:

auth-config --radius <server_ip> --passwd <password>

Caution: Changing the authentication method for SSH while being logged in

via SSH means the system might become remotely inaccessible (e.g. if the

RADIUS server configuration is invalid).

Configure SSH and HTTP(S) to use RADIUS authentication:

auth-config –-ssh-radius --http-radius

The FCS193-AEMS RADIUS Access-Request contains the following attributes:

For http or http-ssl Access-Accept packet can additionally contain the Filter-Id (11) attribute

with the value set to the string “edit”. If the string doesn’t match “edit” or the Filter-Id attribute

is missing from the Access-Accept packet, then the user will have read-only access and will

not be able to edit configuration via the web GUI.

5.10 Firewall iptables

FCS193-AEMS includes the Linux iptables firewall. Changes to the firewall rules are done

from the command console as root user using the iptables command. Documentation for

the iptables command is widely available on the internet.

Caution: All iptables rules must be restricted to interface eth0 by using

the -i eth0 option, as seen in the example below.

E.g. to add a rule to block incoming ping requests use the following command:

iptables -A INPUT -p icmp --icmp-type echo-request -j DROP –i eth0

To see the currently configured rules use the following command:

iptables -L

To delete (flush) all rules and allow all traffic:

iptables -F

To temporarily disable the firewall and allow all traffic:

/etc/init.d/iptables stop

To enable firewall again:

/etc/init.d/iptables start

Saving the firewall rules:

All changes by the iptables command are only temporarily and will be lost on reboot,

unless the changes are saved using the following command:

/etc/init.d/iptables save

5.11 HTTP server

Various configuration options are available for the HTTP server. Use the following command

to see all available options:

httpd-config -h

5.11.1 Enabling and disabling HTTPS

The FCS193-AEMS web server supports HTTP (unencrypted) or HTTPS (encrypted

connection using TLS).

To use HTTPS a SSL/TLS certificate and key must be installed on the FCS193-AEMS.

Authoritatively signed certificates can be obtained by various online retailers.

To use HTTPS the certificates need to be transferred to the FCS193-AEMS and copied to

the following location:

/etc/apache2/server.crt

/etc/apache2/server.key

Once the certificate and key are installed HTTPS can be enabled using the following

command:

httpd-config --https-enable

To switch back to the unencrypted HTTP protocol use the following command:

httpd-config --https-disable

5.11.2 Password protection

It is possible to enable password protection for the web GUI using the following command on

the console as root user:

httpd-config --passwd-enable [--edit-all | --edit-group]

If the --edit-all option is used all authenticated users are allowed to edit the

configuration. If --edit-group option is used only users which are members of the edit

group are allowed to edit the configuration (see section 5.2).

To disable password protection use:

httpd-config --passwd-disable
