3. Getting Started

3.1. Evaluation Software Installation

Install the AS3630 Evaluation Software, which can be found on the USB-stick from the demokit.

3.2. Connecting the Demoboard

Follow the sequence to connect the AS3630 board (as shown in the picture below):

1. Connect the battery to VBAT and GND

2. Connect the ams AG USB-BOX

3. Turn the board on with the Enable switch

3.3. Starting the Software

The correctly installed demo software can be started from Start > Programs > ams > AS3630 or

from the computer’s desktop.

Under “Settings” enable “Enable Chip Detection”.

USB connection is immediately indicated in the status bar of the demo software.

4. Board Startup

• Check first if battery is charged!

• Connect Battery (~3.7V Lithium Ion) to VBAT.

• Connect USB Box.

• Turn on the Enable switch.

• Activate Status Polling

• Press the “Readout Registers”-button

• Press “Settings” an “ Enable Chip Detection”

• If the AS3630 demoboard is supplied and connected correctly to the USB-Box, the indicators on

the bottom right of the GUI will show the words “USB” and “AS3630 Rev.1” in green.

4.1. Automatic Readout of Fault Indications

Therefor go to the tab “settings” and activate automatic update. The software is now always

updating the Fault & Status Indications. If an Indication gets highlighted it must be reset

manually.

4.2. Indicator Mode\PWM

4.2.1. Application

Most times a red LED is used as Indicator in mobilephones.

In some countries it is a law to warn people before a picture is made or if somebody is using the

automatic release the LED starts blinking faster before it picture is made.

4.2.2. Operation

• Select the checkbox ‘On’ in the ‘Indicator’ settings. The LEDs will smoothy light up and

down.

• The ‘Blink on Time’ and the ‘Blink delay’ can be set.

4.3. Torch Light

4.3.1. Application

It can be used as torch function in an mobilephone or as autofocus infront of a flash

4.4. Flash Mode

4.4.1. Operation

• Select the desired flash time in the ‘Flash Timings’ settings. If a high current is selected the

flash time has to be limited to 100ms to prevent the LED of thermal damage.

• Enable charge SC. The Supercap will charge to a certain value.

6. GUI – Software

6.1. Updating the USB-Box

• Connect the USB-Box (J5) with the PC and start the AS3630 Demo Software.

• When connecting the USB-Box for the first time, the box has to be updated to the new Version.

• The update can be started by selecting ‘Firmware Upgrade’ from the Help menu.

6.2.1. Operation Mode

• Shutdown:

The AS3630 is in Shutdown mode

• Shutdown + discharge SC:

The AS3630 is in Shutdown mode and the Supercap gets discharged with ~5mA

• Precharge SC:

Charge the SC close to VIN. This mode is used to control the charging current

• Charge SC:

Charge the Supercap to the defined “End OF Charge Voltage” threshold voltage

• Torch operation:

Activates the torch mode

• PWM Op.:

Keep SC with 10mA current during torch mode

• Torch OP. sync to Strobe:

Torch gets only active if the Strobe is on.

• Falsh Op.:

Enables the Flash mode

6.2.2. NTC

The NTC input can be used to monitor the flash LED temperature if the NTC is enabled. A

internal current source controlled by the nTC current sources a current to the NTC. If the

voltage drops below the NTC threshold voltage, the Flash driver stops lightning.

6.2.3. Indicator

• Indicator current:

The current of the indicator could be set from 1-8mA

• Blink on time and Blink delay

The current source is constantly enabled and the rampup/down, normal or smooth, is done by a

PWM modulation. On time and delay of the PWM can be set.

6.2.4. Flash Setup

• Skip Enable:

Allow Pulseskip operation for ILED

• Balancer Force on

In external torch mode the balancer could be set to force the balance on even in these

operating modes (e.g. if an external source draws current directly from the Supercap)

• Coil2 Limit Red. LED Current

In this operating mode both peak

current settings together (coil1_peak and coil2_peak) are not

able to deliver the programmed led_current. Therefore both DCDCs are operating in coil current

limit and the LED current is the resulting sum of these two currents. If the register bit

curr_limit_curr_red is set, led_current is ramped down until DCDC2 leaves peak current limit

and operation continuous at mode 2. (DCDC1 and DCDC2 together deliver the flash current)

and led_current_min is set to the reduced LED current.

power load (e.g. the RF power

amplifier) without overloading

of the battery, the TXMask

function can be used to limit

the LED current to a certain

value
