1 INTRODUCTION

The ProtoCast wireless gateway is a high performance, cost effective Building and Industrial Automation

multi-protocol gateway that allows devices to communicate to the cloud via Wi-Fi.

NOTE: The latest versions of instruction manuals, driver manuals, configuration manuals and

support utilities are available online at the Sierra Monitor website.

ProtoCast is cloud ready and connects customer devices to the SMC Cloud via Wi-Fi for remote

accessibility. See Section 4.1 for further information.

3 INSTALLING PROTOCAST

3.1 Connector Pinout

In Figure 3, the label on the left is the original version while the label on the right is the new version.

3.2 DI Reference Pin and Power

The DI reference Pin details are shown below, with respect to Digital Input and Output.

3.2.1 Digital Input Wiring

The Digital Inputs are sinking type inputs. This means the external circuit must drive the input low. The

default I/O configuration is input. Ensure unused leads are protected and secured to prevent a short.

WARNING: Configuring a digital input as an output when an external driver is connected may

damage the digital input on the ProtoCast. Note that all device I/O’s are non-isolated. Dry

contact drivers are recommended.

Inputs driven using a sinking driver, including dry contacts such as pushbuttons or relays, should drive the

Pullup (DI) Reference. The 5V output is available as a convenient source.

The ProtoCast can accommodate a combination of both 24VDC digital inputs and 5VDC digital inputs by

using the 5V Power Out terminal to power the 5VDC sensor, as shown below.

3.2.2 Digital Output Wiring

The digital outputs are primarily sinking type outputs. They are capable of sinking approximately 10mA.

The outputs have a limited drive capability of 3V@10mA. When connecting to external inputs that require

higher voltages, use the Pullup (DI) Reference to pull the output up to the target voltage. Ensure that the

circuit design limits the output current to less than 10mA. Use of a current limiting resistor might be

needed.

WARNING: All device I/O’s are non-isolated. When using an external device to drive Pullup (DI)

Reference, make sure that the external device’s GND and Digital GND signals are

connected together. Ideally both this device and the external device are using the same

DC power supply.

4 PROTOCAST SETUP VIA PC

The following instructions walkthrough ProtoCast setup when using a local PC.

NOTE: Only one device (SMC Cloud Tunnel, ProtoCast App or PC Web Brower) can connect to

the ProtoCast GUI at a time.

4.1 Connecting the ProtoCast to the SMC Cloud

4.1.1 Login

• On boot-up the device will be in access point mode with SSID “ProtoCast-XXXX”. Find and

connect to the ProtoCast-XXXX via Wi-Fi.

o Replace “-XXXX” with the last 4 digits of the Ethernet MAC Address found on a label on the

side of the unit

o The network password is “12345678”

• In a browser window, connect to the access point provisioning home page by entering the

following address: http://192.168.10.1/provision.html.

NOTE: If entering 192.168.10.1/provision.html doesn’t bring up the configuration page when

connected to the ProtoCast access point, disconnect the Cat-5 cable from the computer’s

Ethernet port. Some computers do not allow using two network interface cards

simultaneously.

• Login using the default username (“admin”). The default password is the last 4 digits of the Wi-Fi

MAC Address. This is the same 4 digits from the SSID.

NOTE: To change the login password follow the instructions in Appendix A.6.

The ProtoCast allows the following session features on login:

• A session will expire after 20 minutes of inactivity.

• A user session is maintained per browser, independent of the browser window.

o The user is not logged out on refreshing the page

o Inputting the address in multiple new tabs or windows (not in incognito mode) will not be

considered multiple sessions

• Up to 5 sessions are supported at once.

4.1.2 Network Setup

NOTE: Network setup is required only after initial boot-up of the device.

• Click on the Network Settings button to open the Network Settings page.

• Select the type of network connection desired.

NOTE: For Static IP configuration, fill in the required parameters in the input boxes available.

NOTE: Once connected to the local network, Wi-Fi signal strength is shown by the number of

bars next to the network name ( ).

• Click on the “Scan Available Networks” button. This generates a listing of the nearby Wi-Fi

networks available below the Scan button.

• Select the desired network and enter the network password in the input box available.

• Click on the “Connect to Selected Network” button.

• Once successfully connected, the ProtoCast will acquire an IP Address that will be shown in the

browser window.

• Record the IP Address for later configuration.

4.1.3 Registering the ProtoCast to the SMC Cloud

• Connect the host to the network selected in Section 4.1.2. And in a browser window go to the IP

Address shown in the last step in Section 4.1.2.

• On the landing page (Figure 8), click on the Device Registration Settings button. This will start

the device registration process with the cloud server.

• Fill in the details of the fields shown on the Device Registration page. The username and

password fields are the credentials for the cloud server user login.

• To input the latitude and longitude do one of the following:

o Drop a location directly on the google map

o Enter the latitude and longitude manually

• Click the Register Device button.

• Once the device is successfully registered, the following screen will appear listing the device

details and additional information auto-populated by the FieldServer.

4.2 Modbus Device Configuration

• Connect the host to the network selected in Section 4.1.2.

• In a browser window, enter the IP Address shown in the last step in Section 4.1.2.

• Click on the Modbus Device Configuration button.

4.2.1 Modbus Slave Device Details

• On the Modbus Device Configuration page, fill in the Device Slave Address, Baud Rate, Parity,

and Stop Bits fields as per the slave device configuration.

• Click on the Submit Device Settings button.

4.2.2 Add Device Profiles and Set to Active

• From the Modbus Device Configuration page (Figure 13), go to the Add Modbus Device Profile

header and click Choose File button.

• Select the desired file and click Upload Profile.

• Upload files as needed if multiple profiles are required.

• Click on the desired profile and click Set Selected Profile to make the profile active.

• Click System Restart to save changes.

NOTE: Click Override Settings to change the communication configurations from those loaded by

the profile.

4.2.3 View Modbus Data

Go to the ProtoCast landing page for the device (Figure 8) and click on the View Modbus Data button.

This should show the current values of the Modbus device registers.

NOTE: The page may take time to load completely.

4.2.4 Set Alarming

• On the Modbus Data page (Figure 15), click the Configure Alarming button to add, delete or

change alarm settings.

• Add or change alarm values as needed.

The following alarm attributes can be modified by filling in the corresponding field:

Select Severity – Set alarm severity of Alarm, Warning, Trouble, or None.

Setpoint – This value triggers the alarm/warning/trouble.

Falling – If falling is checked, then the alarm/warning/trouble event is triggered when the value falls

below the setpoint. If unchecked, the alarm/warning/trouble event is triggered when the value rises

above the setpoint.

Deadband – No alarming occurs if the value changes by less than the deadband value.

• Click Submit and then OK on the pop-up message that appears to save alarm settings.
