5 is the denominator)
dividend — number to be divided (for example, in 10
÷ 2, 10 is the dividend)
divisor — a number by which another number is to be divided (for example,
in 10
÷ 2, 2 is the divisor)
greatest common factor (GCF) — the greatest number that is a factor of both the
numerator and denominator in a fraction (for example, in
, 4 is the GCF)
improper fraction — a fraction in which the numerator is greater than or equal to
the denominator (for example,
)
lowest terms — refers to a fraction in which the GCF of the numerator and
denominator is 1
mixed number — a number written as a combination of a whole number and a
fraction (for example,
)
numerator — the number on the top of the fraction line (for example, in
, 3 is the
numerator)
reduce — see simplify
simplify — to divide both the numerator and denominator by a common factor;
the resulting fraction has been simplified to lowest terms if the numerator and
denominator were divided by the GCF
