External Bracket Removal
Figure 2: External Actuator Mounting Components
!
CAUTION:
Shock Hazard.
Disconnect the
electrical power supply before
removing the back cover to avoid
possible electrical shock or
damage to the equipment.
1. Remove power to the actuator.
2. Use two 7/16 inch open-end wrenches to remove
the swivel ball joint from the damper crank arm.
3. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the four
screws securing the cover to the actuator.
Remove the cover and save the screws.

4. Disconnect the wires from the actuator.
5. Remove the conduit from the actuator.
6. Use two 7/16 inch open-end wrenches or one
wrench and one nut driver to remove the three
mounting nuts and bolts securing the actuator to
the mounting bracket. Save the bolts and nuts for
further use.
7. Remove the actuator from the mounting bracket.
8. Use two 1/2 inch open-end wrenches to remove the
bolts and nuts securing the bracket to the side plate.
9. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to pry the clip from the
blade pin extension and then remove the blade pin
extension along with the bracket.
10. Use a drill with 3/16 inch bits to remove the nuggets
securing the side plate to the damper frame.
Blade Arm Installation
1. Locate the drive blade which will be the first, third,
or fifth blade from the bottom and using a 3/16 inch
bit, drill two holes for the blade arm (item 2, 3, or 4
in Figure 1). For best results:
Figure 3: Double-Piece Blades
Double-piece blades - drill out the second set
of nuggets from the end channel.
Figure 4: Airfoil Blades
Airfoil blades - measure 1-1/8 inches from the
end channel and drill on the lines etched in the
blade.
Figure 5: Installing Blade Arm
2. Secure the blade arm to the preferred driving blade:
Double-piece blade: Use the two #12-24 x 1/2 inch
hex-head, self-tapping screws (item 5 in Figure 1).
Airfoil blade: Use the two #10-32 x 1-1/4 inch
hex-head screws (item 6 in Figure 1) and two
#10-32 hex nuts (item 7 in Figure 1).

Bracket Installation
Figure 6: Bracket Installation
1. Place the mounting bracket onto the frame and mark
the location for the two drill holes shown in Figure 6.
Remove the actuator from the frame.
2. Use a center punch at the drill hole locations and use
a drill with a 3/16 inch drill bit to make the holes.
3. Place the mounting bracket onto the frame and
secure it using two #12-24 x 1/2 inch self-tapping,
hex-head screws (item 5 in Figure 1).
Figure 7: Internal Mounting Components
4. Place the actuator on the mounting bracket and use
the three nuts and bolts from the external mounting
to secure. Use two 7/16 inch open-end wrenches or
one wrench and one nut driver to tighten the
mounting nuts and bolts.
Figure 8: Connecting Swivel Ball Joint
5. Insert the swivel ball joint into the second hole in the
blade arm (item 2, 3, or 4 in Figure 1) as shown in
Figure 8. Use two 7/16 inch open-end wrenches to
secure the swivel ball joint to the blade arm.
6. Insert the linkage rod into the swivel ball joints and
use a 7/16 inch open-end wrench to verify that the
swivel ball joints are securely connected to the
linkage rod.
7. Connect the wires inside the actuator.
8. Apply power to the actuator and verify that the
actuator drives the damper blades open.
9. If the damper blades do not fully open and close,
adjust the linkage until full open and closed
conditions are met.
10. Secure the cover to the actuator.
The performance specifications are nominal and conform to acceptable industry standards. For application at conditions beyond these specifications,
consult the local Johnson Controls office. Johnson Controls, Inc. shall not be liable for damages resulting from misapplication or misuse of its products.
