LEDSTRIPS
LEDstripsareanewgenera tioninnovativelightingproductwithwhichspectacularlightingeffectscanbecreatedin
aneasyway.Theyoffermanyadvantagesincludingsmalldimensions,lowheatgeneration,higherenergyefficiency,
moresaturatedcoloursandeasilycontrollable.AsyouwillnoticetherearecountlessapplicationsforLEDstrips.
VellemanoffersafullrangeofLEDstripsandaccessories;thisoverviewshouldgiveyouagoodimpressionofwhatis
possibleandhowtoimplementyourownpersonalizedlightingapplication.
GenerallyLEDstripscanbedividedinto2maingroups:flexibleandrigid(nonflexible)strips.
Inthistutorial
andselectionguidewewillonlyfocusonflexibleLEDstripsastheyaremostfrequentlyused.
Selectingtherightstripforyourapplicationisa5stepprocess:
1) Selectastripaccordingtotheplacewhereitwillbeused
(indoors,outdoors)
2) Determinethelengthandthedesired
numberofLEDsperunitoflength.
(lengthinmetersanddesirednr.ofLEDspermeter)
3) Selectthecolour
(singlecolourorRGB)
4) Selectasuitablepowersupply
(voltageandpower)
5) Selectasuitablecontroller
(dimmable,remotelycontrolled,DMXcontrolled,...)
1)Selectastripaccordingtoapplicationarea
Mainlythereare3typesofLEDstripswhichcanbeusedindifferentenvironments:
Barestrip(noprotectionagainstdustorwater)
Idealforindoorapplications,e.g.inorundercupboards,stairs,
indirectlightingapplications
Siliconcoveredstrip(IP67,weatherproof)
Suitableforuseinhumidlocationssuchasbathroomsandfor
useoutdoors,forexampleongardenfurnitureoraccent
lightingonhousesandbuildings...
SiliconsleevedLEDstrip(IP68,fullywaterproof)
Thisstripisfullyencapsulated byasiliconsleeveandis
suitableforuseinextremelyhumidenvironmentssuchas
swimmingpools,saunas,oroutdoorusewheredirectcontact
withrainorwaterisunavoidable.

Note:
OriginallythePCBsholdingtheLEDswerecoppercoloured.NewgenerationLEDstripshavewhitecoated
PCBs,whichgiveamoreuniformlightdistribution.
2)Determinethelengthandthenr.ofLEDspermeter
StandardLEDstripshavealengthof5mandcontaina numberofseriesandparallelconnectedLEDs.This
designenablesyoutocutthestripeveryfixednumberofLEDs;theplaceswher ethestripcanbecutare
clearlymarkedonthestrip.
Cutoffpartsofthestrips
arenotwastedasitispossibletosoldernewpowersupplywirestothesecutoff
parts.
AlsoLEDstripsmayhaveadifferentamountofLEDspermeter.MostcommonareLEDstripswith30or60
LEDspermeter,thusastandardlength5mLED
stripisavailablewith300or600LEDs.
WhichamountofLEDsisbetterforyourapplicationcanbede terminedbyfollowingfactors:
MoreLEDspermeter:
Morelightoutput,moreuniformlightdistributionbetterfordirectlighting
Highercurrent/powerratingswhichha simpactonheat,totallength,power
supplyandcontroller
LessLEDspermeter:
Lesslightoutput,moredispersedlightdistributionespeciallysuitableforindirectlighting
Lowercurrent/powerratingswhichhasimpactonheat,totallength,powersupplyandcontroller
IsitpossibletointerconnectLEDstripstocreatelongerdistances?
Yes,butkeepfollowinglimitationin
mind:
EachLEDstripwillconsumethesameamountofpower.IfLEDstripsareinterconnectedthetotalpowerand
thuscurrenttroughtheLEDstripsincreasesandthiscurrentislimitedbythedesignofthestrip(checkthe
LEDstripdatasheetforratingsandlimitations).
Example:
You
needatotalLEDstriplengthof20mblueLEDstripwith60LEDspermeter(VellemanCHLS3B).Itwould
seemlogicaltojustinterconnectfourfulllengthstripsof5mtoreach20m.
InthedatasheetyoufindthatasingleCHLS3Bneedsa12Vdcsupplyanddraws1.5A
current(18Wpower).
IfcurrentorpowerisnotrateduseJoule’slaw:Power(W)=Voltage(V)xCurrent(A)orCurrent(A)=Power
(W)/voltage(V).
Ifyouinterconnect4stripsthepowerincreasesto4x18W=72Wandcurrentincreasesto4x
1.5A=6A.
Thiscurrentmustpassthroughthefirststriptoreachthelaststrip.Duetodesignlimitations,thetracks
insidetheLEDstripcanonlytakeabout4Awithoutbeingirreversiblydamaged,whichlimitsthetotallength
to10m(2x1.5A=3A)ofLEDstrips.
Thesolutionistointerconnecttwotimes2strips,andconnectthese
separatelytothecontrollerorpowersupply.Todeterminethepowersupplyorcontrollerreferto§4and§5.

3)Selectthecolour
TherearebasicallytwotypesofLEDstripswhencolourisconcerned:
Singlecolourtypes
TheseLEDstripsonlyhaveonecolour.Mostoftenthiscolourisblueorwhite(coldwhite‐CW:resembles
daylight,warmwhite‐WW:resemblesincandescentlight),butothercoloursarealsoavailablee.g.red,
green,amber…
Thesestripscanbeeasilyidentifiedastheyhaveonly2wires(plusandminus)forpowersupply.
Bycontrollingthepowerthestripcanbedimmed(preferablyusingPulseWidthModulationorPWM).
RGBLEDstrips
Withthesestripsitispossibletoprodu ceanycolourbyusingadditivecolourmixing.Thesestripscontain
red,greenandblueLEDs;eithercombinedinasingleRGBLEDorasseparateLEDs(resultinginmoreLEDs
permeter,see§2).
Typicallythesestripshave4
wires,acommonwireand3otherwires:onepercolour(red,greenandblue).
Bycontrollingthepowertoeachseparatecolour,theintensityoftheindividualcolourscanbeadjustedand
thusanycolour(includingwhite)canbecreated.
Notes:
WithRGBstripsthecommonwireisusuallyconnectedtotheanodesoftheLEDs(positive)oftenthiswireis
colouredblack;thewiresforcontrollingR,GandBareconnectedtothecathodes(negative)oftheLEDs,
oftencolouredred,greenandblue.Inthiscase
redandblackwirearenot+andsupplyvoltages!
Theratedpowerismostoftengivenforeachsinglecolour,notforthewholestrip.Keepthisinmindwhen
choosingthepowersupplyorcontroller.Addupthecurrent/powerofthethreecolourstodeterminethetotal
current/powerconsumption.
SpecialRGBstripsareavailablewhereeverysingleRGBLEDisseparatelycontrollableandmagnificentcolour
andanimationeffectscanbecreated.Thesestripscanonlybeusedwithaspecialdedicatedcontroller.
4)Selectionofthepowersupply
TherequiredpowersupplydependsofthechoiceofLEDstripandtheirtotallength.
Both12Vdcand24VdcLEDstripsareavailable.Themainadvantageof24VdcLEDstripsisthatyouhave
doublethequantity ofLEDsforthesamecurrentandpowerconsumptionthanwitha12VdcLED
strip.
Obviously‐sincetheLEDquantityisdoubled‐thelightoutputisalsotwiceasstrong.
Thesecondcriterionisthetotallengthwhichdetermineshowmuchoutputpower(Watts)yoursupplymust
becapableofdelivering.ThecurrentsorpowerratingsareastandardspecificationforeachLEDstrip
and
canbefoundinthedatasheets.
ForinterconnectionofLEDstripssee§2
Example:
Weassumethesameexampleof§2forcalculationofthepowersupply(20mVellemanCHLS3B).
In§2wecalculatedthatonly2stripsmaybeinterconnectedwhichtotalsto10m.Sinceweneed
20m
wemuststillconnect2oftheselengthsinparalleltothepowersupply.
Aswealreadycalculatedweneed4x18W=72W.Whatwearelookingforisaprotected12Vdc
supplywhichiscapableofdeliveringapowerofatleast72W.
