Operating instructions

SICK i10 safety switch is an electromechanical switching device designed to be used with movable guards. It prevents hazardous machine functions from starting until the guard is closed and triggers a stop command if the guard is opened while the machine is running. By providing these functions, the SICK i10 safety switch helps to enhance the safety of personnel working with or near machinery by reducing the risk of accidents caused by unintended machine operation. Here is a summary of the key capabilities of the SICK i10 safety switch:

  • Monitors the position of movable guards
  • Prevents hazardous machine functions from starting while the guard is open

1 On safety
This chapter deals with your own safety and
the safety of the equipment users.
> Please read this chapter carefully before
working with the i10 or with the machine
protected by the i10.
The national/international rules and regula-
tions apply to the installation, commissioning,
use and periodic technical inspections of the
safety switches, in particular
the Machinery Directive 98/37 EC,
the Low Voltage Directive 73/23 EC,
the safety regulations as well as
the work safety regulations/
safety rules.
Manufacturers and operators of the machine
on which the protective devices are used are
responsible for obtaining and observing all
applicable safety regulations and rules.
1.1 Specialist personnel
The safety switch i10 must be mounted, in-
stalled and commissioned only by specialist
personnel. Specialist personnel are defined
as persons who
have undergone the appropriate technical
training
and
have been instructed by the responsible ma-
chine operator in the operation of the ma-
chine and the current valid safety guidelines
and
who have access to these operating
instructions.
1.2 Applications of the safety
switches
Safety switches of the i10 series are electro-
magnetic switching devices. They lock guards
(without locking device) so that
the dangerous state of the machine can only
be switched on when the protective device is
closed and locked,
a STOP command is triggered if the
protective device is opened with the
machine running.
For the control this means that
starting is only possible when the protective
device is in the closed position and the
dangerous motion should cease before
opening the protective device.
Prior to the use of safety switches, a risk
assessment must be performed on the
machine in accordance with
EN 954-1, Safety-related parts of control
systems, Annex B
EN 1050, Safety of machinery, principles of risk
assessment
EN 292, Safety of machinery.
Correct use includes
observance of the applicable requirements on
installation and operation, in particular
EN 954-1, Safety-related parts of control
systems
EN 1088, Interlocking devices associated with
guards
EN 60204-1, Electrical equipment of
machines
the regular inspection of the protective device by
specialist personnel in accordance with section
4.2.
1.3 Correct use
The safety switch i10 must be used only as
defined in chapter 1.2 “Applications of the safety
switches”. The safety switch must be used only on
the machine where it has been mounted, installed
and initialised by specialist personnel in
accordance with these operating instructions.
All warranty claims against SICK AG are forfeited in
the case of any other use, or alterations being made
to the safety switch, even as part of its mounting or
installation.
1.4 General safety notes and
protective measures
Safety switches provide a protection function for
persons. Incorrect installation or manipulation can
result in serious injuries.
a
Safety switches are not allowed to be
bypassed, turned away, removed or
made ineffective in any other manner.
a
The switching procedure may only be
activated by actuators specifically
designated for that purpose, which are
inextricably connected to the protective
device.
The i10 series safety switches comply with the
standard EN 60947-5-1 (incl. Annex K) and comply
with the requirements of the Berufsgenossen-
schaften für Maschinen, Anlagen und Personen-
schutz (German trade association for machinery,
systems and safety). The year of manufacture for
the switch is given by the manufacturing code
(from the type label).
1.5 Function
The safety switch signals that the guard is closed.
a
The switch does not provide any
locking!
> Closing: The safety contacts are closed by
inserting the actuator.
> Opening: The safety contacts are positively
opened by removing the actuator.
2 Mounting
a
Mounting is only allowed to be
performed by authorised and qualified
personnel.
Fit the safety switch such that
it is difficult for operators to access when the
protective device is open,
it is possible to inspect and replace the safety
switches.
a
Safety switches and actuators must not
be used as a mechanical stop.
a
Mount only in the assembled condition!
> Insert the actuator into the control cam.
> Mount the safety switch positively.
For safety applications (fixed position), mount
safety switch using M5 × 30 screws.
> Connect the actuator to the protective device
securely and permanently, e.g. using one-way
bolts or by riveting or welding.
> Fit additional stop for moving parts of the
protective device.
2.1 Reversing the actuating direction
Fig. 1: Reversing the actuating direction
> Loosen the bolts on the control cam.
> Set the required direction.
> Tighten screws to 0.6 Nm.
a
Increased actuator overtravel is not
possible with a vertical approach
direction.
2.2 Protection against surroundings
A precondition for a durable and perfect safety
function is the protection of the control cam
against penetration by foreign matter such as
shavings, sand, abrasive materials etc.; Seal
unused actuating slots with the enclosed slot
covers.
Cover the control slot, the actuator and the rating
plate when painting. Use only solvent free cleaning
materials when cleaning the safety switch.
3 Electrical installation
a
The electrical connection is only
allowed to be made by authorised
personnel.
a
Take note of the excess temperature in
the casing when selecting insulation
material or pigtails (depending on the
operating conditions)!
Fig. 2: Opening the safety switch
> Assemble screwed cable gland M20 x 1.5 with
the corresponding enclosure rating.
> Use wire cross section 0.5 to 1.5 mm

; for
contact configuration see Fig. 3.
> Operate all contact pairs in the same voltage
range.
> Connect all live parts to one side of the contact
block; For contact configuration see Fig. 3.

> Take account of the density of the line entrance.

4 Commissioning
4.1 Tests before the first
commissioning
Mechanical functional check
> It must be possible to insert the actuator into
the control cam without any problem. Close the
protective device several times to verify this.
Electrical functional check
> Close the protective device.
> Start machine.
a
Check whether the machine stops when
the protective device is opened.
> Switch off machine.
> Open the protective device.
> Attempt to start the machine.
a
The machine must not start with a
protective device open!
4.2 Regular technical inspections
Maintenance work is not necessary. To ensure
correct function over the long term, regular checks
are necessary.
Daily or prior to the start of the shift the operator
must check for:
correct function
no visible evidence of tampering.
Regularly according to the machine maintenance
schedule by the competent personnel:
correct switching function
safe assembly of the modules
deposits and wear and tear
correct sealing of cable entry
cable connections that have come loose.
a
The entire switch and actuator must be
replaced in the case of damage or wear
and tear.
It is not permitted to exchange
individual components or modules!
Safety switches i10 must be replaced completely
after 1 million switching operations.
