About this Manual
This is the hardware manual for the emPC-X1600 embedded PC. It starts with an introduction to the
emPC-X1600. After that it discusses some topics about installation of the product. The rest of the
manual then covers technical details about the emPC-X1600.
Throughout this manual the term emPC-X1600 also refers to emPC-X1100 when not otherwise
noticed. Both products only differ in the CPU option.
More in depth technical information will be found in secondary manuals, e.g. the ixBus system
reference manual.

prevent damage to property. These are visually marked with the following alert symbols:
DANGER
indicates that death or severe personal injury will result if proper precautions are not
taken.
WARNING
indicates that death or severe personal injury may result if proper precautions are not
taken.
CAUTION
indicates that minor personal injury can result if proper precautions are not taken.
NOTICE
indicates that damage to equipment can result if proper precautions are not taken.
indicates information that we think you should have read to save your time by avoiding
common problems. Important suggestions that should be followed will also be marked
with this sign.

1 Introduction
The emPC-X1600-Platform is a flexible computer system. It consists of one CPU board and can be
expanded with a variety of IO expansion boards. The boards are stacked together and are inserted into a
rail mounted housing. This allows flexible system building. Internal busses are documented, so users can
build application specific IO expansion boards.

1.1.2 Hardware Customization
Due to it’s flexible system architecture, the emPC-X1600 can be easily customized if the standard
products do not provide optimum features or price. Customization is possible even at moderate
quantities. Ask sales department for details.
Following you find a (non-complete) list of possible customization:
Internal SSD with up to 4 GByte MLC Flash. Soldered to PCB for improved mechanical reliability.
Without nvSRAM for price reduction.
Serial ports can be modified for RS485 physical layer (optionally isolated)
More CAN ports are possible by using expansion cards (in a larger housing)
More serial ports are possible (but not currently supported for WindowsXP)
Digital/Analog-IO expansion card
Customer specific expansion cards
Power supply monitor to supervise power supply voltage and one external control voltage. The
monitor can be configured to turn system on/off upon configurable thresholds and with
configurable timeouts.

an improper power supply.
WARNING: Unauthorized Opening
Improper opening of the device may result in substantial damage to the equipment.
Remove power before you open the housing of the product. Do not connect power or
operate the product until you have closed the housing and tightened all screws.
WARNING: Electrical Shock
The IO interfaces (connectors) of the product are only suited to be connected to SELV
circuits. Use interfaces (connectors) for their intended use only.
CAUTION: Explosive Risk
Danger of explosion when replacing with wrong type of battery.
The product equipped with a Lithium battery. Replace only with battery of the same or
equivalent type.
2.2 Ambient and Environmental Conditions
DANGER: Explosive Risk
This product is NOT designed to be used in potentially explosive atmosphere.
Do not operate this product in potentially explosive atmosphere.
WARNING
This product does NOT fulfil the requirements for a fire enclosure according to EN
60950-1 in all possible mounting positions. In these mounting positions, installation is
only permitted above concrete or other non inflammable materials.
NOTICE: Damage
Do not operate the product beyond the specified ambient conditions. Do not cover the
vent slots of the product.

3 - 8 emPC-X1600 (Hardware Manual) Installation/Maintenance
3 Installation/Maintenance
WARNING
The emPC-X1600 is designed as a fan less computer system. Nevertheless a certain
amount of heat is generated inside the housing. The housing transports this heat to the
environment. Caution when touching the housing, burns hazard!
The external power supply has to be connected to “+” and “-“. The additional input “S” is the sense input
of an optional power supply monitor (Leave open if the power supply monitor is not available).
If the Power LED does not lit after power is applied, the input polarity might be reversed. Swap the wires
and try again.
Once during power-on, the BIOS detects which type of monitor is connected to the
emPC-X1600 and configures the video system accordingly. Therefore:
If you have no monitor connected to the DVI connector during power-on, you will
not see any video output, even if you connect a monitor later on.
If the monitor you have connected during power-on is not supported, then you
will not see any video output, even if you connect a proper monitor later. Note
that the BIOS rejects to operate with monitors that have a larger physical
resolution than supported. E.g your UXGA monitor will not work as 1600x1200 is
rejected by BIOS.
3.1 cFast Card Removal
Due to space limitations for the emPC-X1600, there is no opening in the housing for the
internal cFast Flash card on the CPU module. For removing the cFast Flash card the
housing of the emPC-X1600 must be opened. Therefore the back panel of the housing
must be removed by removing the two screws – the back is the one with which the
emPC-X1600
is
mounted on the DIN rail.
NOTICE
Power must be turned off before removing or inserting the compact flash card. When
installing the Compact Flash Card, precautions against electrostatic discharge (ESD)
must be taken.
3.2 Battery replacement
The battery is needed for keeping the RTC alive. To replace the battery the housing must be opened by
removing the four screws at the front.
CAUTION
Explosion risk in case of improper replacement of the battery. Disposal of used batteries
according to local regulations. Replace only with the same or equivalent type. When
installing the battery, precautions against electrostatic discharge (ESD) must be taken.

4.1 Power Supply, Reset and Power LED

and is included in delivery. The assignment of this connector is shown in Figure 5 and Table 3.

There is a Reset button next to the power connector. The LED next to the power connector is the power
LED.
Internal system GND is connected to the housing and routed to the power supply
connector via a common mode choke.
If voltage is applied the GND pin of the connector (e.g. + and - reversed) while the
housing is still connected to GND (e.g. by cables shields) then the common mode choke
or the internal PCB traces can be destroyed. The polarity reversal protection will not
protect this fault.
4.2 RS232 (Console)
The RS232 (Console) serial interface is provided by Super IO W83627 chip, hence it is a legacy
compatible serial port. The connector is a standard 9 pin D-SUB plug, but the interface is connected with
four wires only, table 4 shows the pin out. The names and the address for this connector are shown in

4.3 RS232
Additional serial interfaces might be implemented by a XR16V2750
dual UART chip. This type of serial
port has proprietary implementation over the internal expansion bus. Hence it needs special software
driver. For a description of UART registers refer to the TI manual. The UART clock input is 14,7456MHz
to allow error free generation of standard baud rates. This RS232 variant provides all 8 interface signals
as shown in table 5.

4.4 RS485
In the RS485 variant, there are only the differential signals D+ and D- provided. The transceiver is
enabled to send data, when RTS# of the corresponding UART is low. Data received on the RS485 will
always be seen on the UART’s RxD input. This is regardless of the RTS# state. It is however possible to
modify the hardware, so that transmitted data is not received (RTS# low disables receiver).
When the receiver is enabled and no data is send (MARK=1), then D+ > D-.
