99-00360-02 REV A0 Room Control Module Installation Guide for the 3000i 1
Installing the Room Control Module
These instructions explain how to install the SMART Room Control Module (part No. 3000i-RCM). For
information about programming the module to work with a third-party system, refer to the Room Control
Module Integration Guide for the Rear Projection SMART Board™ 3000i Interactive Whiteboard.
You can use a third-party room-control system to change the projector settings for a Rear Projection
SMART Board 3000i interactive whiteboard. However, when used on its own, a third-party room-control
system doesn’t provide access to the many features available from the control panel on the 3000i. To
provide an interface between the room control system and the 3000i, you need the SMART Room
Control Module. You can then use the control panel or the room control system to change the standby
state, source, display and volume settings for the 3000i.
NOTE: Check that the last four digits of the serial number for your 3000i are greater than 05000. The
Room Control Module only works with SMART Board 3000i interactive whiteboards that have a serial
number greater than 05000, because these units contain the SMART X-Port™ 20 switch.
The Room Control Module kit for the 3000i contains the following:
the Room Control Module
a custom straight-through MOD4 I
2
C cable with RJ11-6 (RJ12) connectors at both ends
(part No. 93-199-00) and a tie wrap
a custom I
2

3000i is between 05000 and 05999
an anti-static wrist strap

a diskette with the hex file for upgrading the control panel firmware

You’ll need a Phillips® No. 2 screwdriver and cutting pliers or wire cutters to perform the installation.
About the Custom Straight-Through MOD4 I
2
C Cables
Before you install the Room Control Module in the patch panel, you need to connect two cables. We
supply one of the cables and you must reroute the other from inside the cabinet. Both are custom
MOD4 I
2
C cables that use RJ11-6 (RJ12) connectors with four colored wires attached and identical pin
assignments at both ends. The pin assignments for the connectors, shown below, are vital for the
cables to work correctly.
WARNING: This is a custom straight-through cable, not a standard crossover telephone cable. Using a
telephone cable instead of this custom cable could damage the Room Control Module and the 3000i.

Removing the Blank Panel
NOTE: We recommend that you wear the supplied anti-static wrist strap throughout the
installation process. This wrist strap protects electronic components from damage due to
electrostatic discharge. Attach the adhesive side of the strap to your wrist and wrap the copper
tape on the other end of the strip around either of the two screws shown below.
Cables removed from
illustration for clarity
Wrap the copper tape on the anti-static
wrist strap around either screw
1 Shut down the computer, and put the projector into Standby mode. Wait a full minute to allow
the fans to cool the projector, and then unplug the 3000i from the power outlet.
2 With a Phillips No. 2 screwdriver, remove the four screws used to attach the blank panel at
the left end of the patch panel (rear of cabinet). Discard the blank panel, but keep the screws
handy. You’ll need them later to install the Room Control Module.

2 Connect the DB9F end of a DB9F/custom cable to the Control port on the Room Control
Module. This cable isn’t supplied by SMART Technologies. It’s usually supplied by the third-
party room control vendor.
NOTE: Do not use an off-the-shelf DB9 null-modem cable to connect the SMART Room
Control Module to a third-party room-control system, as the DTR/DSR pin will cause the
system to malfunction.

Updating the Control Panel Firmware
If the control panel card in your 3000i uses firmware version 2.0, 2.10 or 2.11, you'll need to
update the firmware to version 2.12.
NOTE: This procedure takes between 20 and 30 minutes. If you use a laptop computer to
complete the following steps, make sure it’s connected to a continuous power source.
To determine your firmware version
1 Disconnect the port in the SMART Board Control Panel as follows:
a Click the SMART Board icon in the System Tray and select Control Panel.
The SMART Board Control Panel opens.
b On the Boards tab, select the port for your interactive whiteboard.
c Click the Disconnect button.

2 Open the WBDiag application as follows:
a On the Boards tab, click the Log button.
The Status Log opens.
b Click the Diagnostics button.
The WBDiag application opens.
3 Open the port in WBDiag as follows:
a There are four numbered COM port buttons on the WBDiag toolbar. Ensure that the
correct one for your interactive whiteboard is selected.
COM 1 Selected
b Click the Open Port button.
When the port is successfully opened, an OPEN SUCCEEDED!! message appears.
4 Select Wonderbar > Hardware Info and take note of the firmware version in the dialog box
that appears.
5 If the firmware version is 2.0, 2.10 or 2.11, update the firmware as explained in the next
section.
OR
If the firmware version is 2.12 or higher, there’s no need to update the control panel firmware.
However, before you integrate the Room Control Module:
a Select File > Exit in the WBDiag window.
b Click the Close button in the Status Log.
The SMART Board Control Panel appears.
c On the Boards tab, click the Connect button.
The Select COM Port dialog box opens.
d Under Manual, select the correct COM port from the list and then click the Select button.
OR
Click the Detect SMART Hardware button. The system searches for the presence of the
interactive whiteboard until the correct COM port is located.
To update the control panel firmware
The port for your interactive whiteboard should still be disconnected. If it isn’t, follow the
instructions in step 1 on page 11. In addition, the WBDiag application should still be open. If it
isn’t, follow the instructions in step 2 on page 12.
1 Copy the hex file on the supplied diskette to the hard drive of the laptop or internal computer.
The hex file is also available from our Web site at www.smarttech.com/support/firmware.
NOTE: The port should still be open. If it isn't, select the COM port for your interactive
whiteboard in WBDiag and click the Open Port button.
2 Select Wonderbar > Download Firmware.
The Open dialog box appears.
WARNING:
Do not click the
button or the Download
Firmware command on
the Board menu, as that
would replace your serial
controller firmware with
firmware intended for the
control panel, thereby
rendering your system
inoperable.

3 Browse to the hex file and open it. The download process takes approximately 20 to 30
minutes. We recommend that you not disturb this process by performing any work on the
laptop or internal computer for the duration of the download.
During the download, a series of messages appear. At the end of the download, you will
see the following:
