SonicWall WiFi Cloud Manager is a cloud-based WiFi network management system that simplifies
access point deployment, management, and monitoring. WiFi Cloud Manager is fully integrated with
Capture Security Center, providing seamless integration with MySonicWall, Licensing, and the
SonicWiFi app on your mobile device.
The various SonicWall access point devices in the WiFi Cloud Manager network handle all aspects of
authentication, association, fast and secure roaming, data forwarding, and power and channel
management.

About WiFi Planner
SonicWall WiFi Planner is an intuitive, web-based, wireless planning tool that is an important adjunct
to the SonicWall WiFi Cloud Manager (WCM). It provides options for creating, managing, and
assessing your WiFi Access Point (AP) deployments. The WiFi Planner is accessible from the
SonicWall WiFi Cloud Manager Dashboard screen.
The WiFi Planner simulates wireless deployment using SonicWall wireless products. You can create
new floor plans, upload existing floor plan images, and use Google maps to upload outdoor
environments. The Advisor tool helps you place access points on a floor plan, and viewing options give
you control of layers, devices, radio bands, channels, tools, access point inventories, and heat map
coverage. Exportable reports are available for download from WiFi Planner.

WiFi Planner includes the following features:
Projects - Create and manage different projects for different customer sites and deployments.
Floor Plans - Upload, scale, and manage floor plans.
Google Map Integration - Use Google maps to create outdoor floor plans.
Environments - Configure a floor plan environment by identifying WiFi zones, setting up
environment obstacles, and identifying a specific floor plan area type for improved coverage.
Access Point Advisor - Use the Advisor tool to automatically place access points, or add
access points manually. Additional configuration options include adjusting access point
locations and parameters, auto-placement, and auto-location settings.
Viewing Options - Configure floor plan layers, device information, switch radio bands, specify a
radio channel, and use the ruler tool.
Viewing and Adjusting Results - View and adjust floor plan access point inventory and heat
map of access point coverage.
Reports - Run the report generator and download PDF formatted reports for specific projects.
WDS Links - Create Wireless Distribution System (WDS) links between access points.

Getting Started
This chapter helps you get started using WiFi Planner to maximize the placement of your access
points in your WiFi Cloud Manager hierarchy.

You need the following to use the WiFi Planner:
A computer running a supported version of Windows or MacOS
An active Internet connection. Use the latest Google Chrome browser with HTML5 support.
A MySonicWall account
A hierarchy with locations and zones, set up under your Tenant/Group in WiFi Cloud Manager
(WCM). For more information about setting up your hierarchy in WCM, consult the WiFi Cloud
Manager documentation on the SonicWall support website.
Accessing WiFi Planner
WiFi Planner is accessible from the WiFi Cloud Manager Dashboard screen.
To access WiFi Planner via WiFi Cloud Manager:
1 Go to https://cloud.sonicwall.com to launch Capture Security Center.
2 Use your MySonicWall WiFi Cloud Manager credentials to log into your account. On the first
WCM screen, seen below, the Tenants/Groups you have set up in WiFi Cloud Manager are on
the left under Tenants/Groups.
3 Click on the Tenant/Group you want to work with to highlight the tile.

4 Click the Wireless tile under Cloud Services.
5 If the prompt appears for WiFi Planner, click Launch.
6 If the WiFi Cloud Manager Dashboard appears, click WiFi Planner at the bottom of the
navigation pane to launch the WiFi Planner tool.

Navigating in WiFi Planner
The WiFi Planner User Interface is entirely based on having easy access to your projects and to
options for configuring them. The first screen that comes up gives you an overview of all your projects.
When you first use WiFi Planner and have not yet created any projects or deployed any access point
devices, there is only a sample project shown on the My Projects screen. The screen below shows
several projects already created. The process is the same for creating a project whether this is your
first one or you have already created many projects in the zones of your WiFi Cloud Manager
hierarchy.
To bring up an individual project screen:
1 On the My Projects screen shown below, hover over the tile of the project you want to open.
Open Project appears on the tile.
2 Click on Open Project on the tile you want to open.
The options on this screen are explained below the screen:
Search: Click on the magnifying glass in the top left corner to search for a project.
Sort: The top right button next to New Projects has a drop-down list that gives the options for
sorting the projects.
New Projects: Click New Projects to bring up the screens for creating a new project.
When you hover over a project, new options appear:
Open Project: Click this button in the middle of the tile to go to the individual project screen.
Duplicate: Click Duplicate to create a similar project
Star: A starred project is marked so that it is easy to find.
Delete: Click on the delete icon to delete the project.

The Number of floor plans in this project and APs deployed in it are given in the center of the
tile.
3 When you click on Open Project on the project tile, the individual project screen appears. It
contains the details of this project’s current configuration.
The options for user configuration of this project are given below the screen starting top left, and
going clockwise around the screen:
Floor Plans: The top of the navigation pane shows the names of the floor plans in this project.
The one that is currently open on the screen is marked with a little orange circle to the right of
the navigation pane.
Arrow down (Layer icon): This icon allows you to adjust the access point layers, as explained in
Show/Hide Object Layers, and several other options.
Zone: This drop-down list is used to set up specific zones for WiFi Coverage Zones and WiFi
Exclusion Zones, as explained in a later section of this guide.
Obstacle: This drop-down list is used to identify obstacles in the floor plan that might alter WiFi
connectivity in the area. See Specifying Environment Obstacles for details.
Area: This drop-down list is used to indicate that this area is of a specific type, which might
impact WiFi coverage, as explained in Specifying a Floor Plan Area Type.
Manually-Placed APs: This icon identifies the APs you wish to place manually. See Manually
Adding Access Points for more information.
Advisor Icon: This icon is used to choose the Advisor to help with auto-placing APs on the floor
plan, as explained in Using Access Point Advisor.
Auto-Channel: Auto-Channel, explained in Using Auto-Channel Adjustment, automatically sets
the best channel for optimal service.
Optimizer: Click the Optimizer to run a check to see if the current AP placement is optimal. See
Using Auto-Position Adjustment for details.
Delete All: This icon is used to delete all APs that have been placed so far on the floor plan, as
explained in Removing All Access Points.

Inventory List: Gives a list of the APs that are currently deployed on this floor plan. See Viewing
an Access Point Inventory.
Heat Map: Click on this icon to bring up the Heat Map of this floor plan, which uses various
colors to show the strength of the local WiFi signal. This feature is explained in Viewing Heat
Map of Access Points.
WDS: This icon is used to indicate the APs that are part of a Wireless Distribution System
(WDS), as explained in Creating Wireless Distribution System Links.
Mesh Group: This icon is assigned to APs that are part of a Mesh group, as explained in
Creating Mesh Groups.
The little red paper symbol in the top right corner can be clicked to generate reports, as
explained in Creating a Report.
Save as Image: Clicking this button saves the current floor plan as a JPG image file on your
computer. It can be clicked at any time during your configuration session.
Ruler, Hide Grid, and Reset Scale: These options can be applied to the floor plan image at any
time to measure parts of the floor plan with the ruler, hide or show the grid, or reset the scale of
the image, as explained in Floor Plan Viewing Options.
Plus + Icon and paper: This symbol is used to add a new floor plan to the project.
2 Floor Plan(s): Gives the number of floor plans in the project and the country they are in.
Country Symbol: Gives the map of the country this floor plan is in.
Zoom/Ruler: Zoom and the ruler in the center can be used to zoom in and out from the image,
and view the scale of the floor plan.
Many of these options take the user to smaller dialog screens to enter data or check configurations.
The next chapters give details on these processes, most of which start on the My Projects screen with
the choice of a project to open and configure. Refer back to the information in this chapter for help
with the location of options and their uses.

Projects
This section describes how to create and manage wireless projects in your WiFi Cloud Manager zones
using the SonicWall WiFi Planner.

Creating a Project
A project is the basis for the deployment of access points in a zone of your WCM hierarchy.
To create a new wireless project:
1 On the My Projects screen, click New Project to bring up the Create New Project screen.

2 Type a unique descriptive name for your project in the Project Name field.
3 Select a Country from the drop-down menu
4 Click Create to save the project, or Cancel if you change your mind.
The My Projects screen reappears, showing the new project you just created along with any other
previously-created projects
Managing a Project
Once you have created projects, WiFi Planner provides tools for managing the projects.
Cloning a Wireless Project
Duplicating a project creates a new copy of the wireless project on your My Projects screen, along
with the original copy. This might be useful if you want to create a project that is very similar to one
you have already created.
To duplicate a wireless project:
1 Go to WiFi Planner > My Projects and hover over a project tile.
2 Click Duplicate . The project is duplicated in the list of available projects. Then you can
configure the project to your new specifications.
Deleting a Wireless Project
Deleting a wireless project removes the wireless project from your WiFi Planner My Projects screen.
To delete a wireless project:
1 Go to WiFi Planner > My Projects and hover over the project tile to see available options.
2 While hovering over the tile, click Delete .
3 Select Yes, delete at the prompt, to delete the project.
4 If you change your mind, select No, do not delete to keep the project.
5 Deleted projects are no longer shown on the My Projects screen. Access points that have been
deployed in deleted projects are no long active.
NOTE: Selecting a country is important because it applies the correct WiFi regulations when
the system is optimizing WiFi channels for access point placement.

Searching for a Wireless Project
When you have an extensive hierarchy, you might need to search for a project by name.
To search for a wireless project:
1 Go to WiFi Planner > My Projects and click Search .
2 Enter a project name in the search field and press Enter to see a list of results.
Starring a Wireless Project
Starring a wireless project makes it easier to find when scanning through your various projects.
To star a wireless project:
1 Go to WiFi Planner > My Projects and hover over the project tile to see the available options.
2 Click Star , and the project is marked for easy access.

Sorting Wireless Projects
Sorting wireless projects makes it easier to find similar projects.
To sort wireless projects:
1 Go to WiFi Planner > My Projects. Clicking on the drop-down menu next to New Project
brings up a list of sorting options.
2 Click an option from the list of sorting choices. The projects are sorted based on the selection
made.

Creating a Floor Plan
This section describes how to add, scale, and manage a floor plan in your WiFi Cloud Manager project.
You can upload multiple floor plans for your project based on deployment requirements. Floor plans
can include areas in a building, floors, entire buildings, and Google Maps areas.
Indoor and outdoor floor plans have different options available for WiFi Planner configuration. Some
of the features discussed in these chapters are not available for outdoor floor plans. These include:
Obstacles, Areas, and WiFi coverage and exclusion zone settings
Placement Advisor
Optimizer
Auto Channel
Outdoor floor plans have the following features not shared by indoor floor plans:
Outdoor report previews only contain the access point list.
Scaling is not necessary if the floor plan is created from a Google Map.
The outdoor map has the ability to switch between map and satellite viewing modes.

Adding a New Floor Plan
WiFi Planner allows you to upload a floor plan image or a Google Map area to an existing WCM
project. This feature can save time, because you don’t need to create a new floor plan when you
already have one that you wish to upload.
To add a new floor plan:
1 Hover over the project tile on the My Projects screen and click Open Project to bring up the
main project screen for that project.

2 Hover over and click Add Floor Plan. The Add New Floor Plan screen appears, where you can
add a floor plan to this project.

3 On the Add New Floor Plan screen, add a Floor Plan Name. Choose whether to Use Image, or
Use Google Map to import a new floor plan for your project.
4 If you choose Use Image, the screen below appears, where you can Drag and Drop your floor
plan or Browse for a file plan from your computer.
5 Click Apply to upload the floor plan. Your new floor plan appears in the middle of the Add New
Floor Plan screen, as shown below.
6 At this point, you can click Change to make changes before your floor plan is saved into your
project. For example, you can click the corner of the blue rectangle and drag it to crop the floor
plan.
NOTE: The image size upper limit is 10M. Supported image formats include PNG, JPG,
and GIF.

7 Once you are satisfied, click Apply to save the floor plan and return to the main screen for the
project where you have added the floor plan.
With the WiFi Planner you can Add a New Floor Plan that is an uploaded Google Map from the main
screen for a project.
To add a Google Map to a floor plan:
1 On the My Projects screen, hover over the project tile and click Open Project to bring up the
main project screen for that project. Repeat the steps given above for using a file image.
2 On the Add New Floor Plan screen, choose Use Google Maps, and fill in the Google Address at
the prompt.

Scaling a Floor Plan
The set scale feature helps you set the scale for newly created or altered floor plans. You must define
the scale before you can proceed to setting up an environment or placing access points on the floor
plan.
To scale a new floor plan:
1 Select a floor plan from the navigation pane. The selected floor plan appears.
2 Click Set Scale. Select a line whose length you know. Draw along it on the floor plan by holding
down the right mouse button as you move across the floor plan the length of the line.
3 Type a value when prompted, and select Feet or Meter units. The rest of the floor plan is scaled
to that value.
4 Click Reset at the bottom left if you wish to reset the scale settings.

Managing Floor Plans
WiFi Planner allows you to rename, duplicate, or delete a floor plan.
To manage a floor plan:
1 Select one of the floor plans in the project from the navigation pane to bring up the floor plan.
2 To rename a floor plan, right-click it and select Rename.
3 To duplicate a floor plan, right-click it and select Duplicate.
4 To delete a floor plan, right-click it and select Delete.
