The following procedure generally describes the materials and steps that are necessary to install the 3M Marine Fire Wrap System (MFW).
Check the applicable Classification Society approval certificate for additional details.
NOTE: Consult each product’s Safety Data Sheet for Exposure Controls / Personal Protection
Surface Preparation
1. A thorough cleaning of the collar systems and before applying MFW is recommended. Removal of all foreign matter and
contaminants such as adhesives, grease, oil, dust, water, surface dirt, old sealant or lose paint by using a 3M Citrus Base cleaner,
alcohol or commercial cleaning solution. Detergent or soap and water treatments are not recommended for this step.
2. Spray the collar surface with the solution of choice. Let stand for 5 minutes, then wipe off the solution with a clean oil-free and lint-
free cloth. If the area is particularly dirty a light scrub with a 3M Synthetic Steel Wool Pad of choice is recommended to loosen
contaminates. A second application of the solution and final wipe with a lint-free cloth should make sure that all contaminants are
removed.
3. Scrape areas of the collar that have lose paint or accumulated dirt, grease or oil with a metal scraper to remove all lose foreign matter,
then thoroughly clean the collar a final time with the 3M Citrus Cleaner and a lint-free cloth or wipe.
4. If the penetrating items, i.e. cables, wires, pipes area dirty, also clean with 3M Citrus Base Cleaner to remove foreign material a
minimum 6 inches on either side of collar system.
3M Marine Fire Wrap (MFW) Installation
1. It is recommended that the cables, wires and pipes are supported above the collar body before installing the MFW system, this will
facilitate easy access to the inside collar surface. The 3M MFW system requires a minimum 6 mm (1/4") separation between
penetrants to achieve adequate water tightness. Loosen all cable bonds or pipe clamps to achieve this spacing.

2. Install the 3M Marine Fire Wrap material by sizing the length of the material to the inside of the collar. Material may be overlapped but
cannot be cut short. Cutting should be done with a sharp scissors, single edge razor or utility knife. Cut squarely across the MFW to
form a flat surface (a straight edge may be used for this application).
3. Align the MFW so that the edge of the MFW is recessed 10mm (3/8”) form the even with the edge of the collar.
Helpful Hint: It is recommended that the liner tape be slightly removed before installing into collar this will allow for easy removal of liner
without damage to the adhesive layer and the MFW material. This will also allow you to tack the start of the MFW strip in the collar.

4. Secure the MFW by removing the adhesive liner and pressing the MFW into place as the liner is removed. Force the MFW strip tightly
into the corners maintaining a flat surface bond.
Mineral Wool Installation
Rockwool Firebatt 825 (110 kg/m
3
density) should be used for this step. The mineral wool should bear the Wheelmark and be
accompanied by the Declaration of Conformity. Other materials such as fiberglass insulation, cotton packing materials and cardboard
should not be used for this step. Using a serrated knife, utility knife or other sharp knife type instruments can be used for the cutting of the
mineral wool
1. Fill the annular space inside the MFW and around the cables with the mineral wool. Friction fit the mineral wool into the coaming and
arrange it so it is recessed 10 mm (3/8”) in from the end of the coaming.
2. Pack mineral wool between cables to achieve a minimum 6 mm (1/4") spacing. Pushing small pieces of mineral wool between the
penetrants with a spatula can help force the separation.

4
Caulk Installation
Use the 3M Fire Barrier 1000 NS sealant for this step A minimum 10 mm (3/8") depth is required.
1. Apply the sealant with a standard hand applicator gun, electric caulk gun or pneumatic application systems. Fill areas around
penetrants first with a small bead of sealant, this will help to get good adhesion around the cables. Work sealant out from penetrants
to form a light coat or enough to cover mineral wool. Apply a second coat to fill to appropriate depth.
Note: When applying sealant, make sure to not induce air bubbles onto the sealant by lifting the sealant bead. Smooth straight bead
application will allow for a neater application.
2. Areas that are hard to reach with a standard applicator gun can be done by adding a length of minimum 13 mm (1/2") flexible or rigid
tubing to the end of the cartridge tip. This will allow for a much smaller applicator end when necessary.

3. Immediately after applying the sealant use a spatula or putty knife smooth/tool the surface of the sealant. Using the end of the
spatula blade, while moving up and down rapidly can level the areas between the cables pipes or wires.
Note: Do not wait too long after application of sealant to surface the sealant as certain conditions can accelerate surface skim over.
Likewise, too much surfacing may actually make the surface look worse.
Curing times may vary depending on temperature and relative humidity. Full curing/adhesion can take up to 21 days, depending on
conditions.
Cleanup
1. To cleanup sealant from tools and work surfaces use the 3M Citrus Base Industrial Cleaner. Spray on a rag and wipe off tools or
other metal surfaces.
Precautionary Notes:
Care should be taken when spraying directly on the surface of an object. Follow the directions on the 3M Citrus Base Industrial Cleaner
can for details.
Be careful not to step on adhesive and transfer to carpeting, floors or other sensitive surfaces.
Should you get some of the sealant on the surrounding surfaces an application and gentle wipe with the 3M Citrus Base Industrial Cleaner
solution can be used.

Adding - Removing Cables or Repairing
Adding cables
To add a new cable, cut an "X" into the 1000NS and the Packing Material and force the cable through the system or cut a hole that is
slightly undersized for the cable to maintain the compression of the packing material. Apply sealant to fill voids or openings.
Removing cables-repair
Carefully cut through the 1000NS around the cable and then pull it out of the through penetration. Use mineral wool to re-pack the area
where the cable has left a void and re-seal with 1000NS.
