1 About this document
This instruction manual contains important information for the
safe and appropriate installation and commissioning of the
Velocity-Time-Meter, VTM. It also contains information about
service and maintenance, and how to remedy simple malfunctions
yourself.
O Read this instruction manual carefully, especially chapter 3
“For your safety”, before you start working with the VTM.
1.1 Abbreviations

VTM is used to measure time and velocity for pneumatic
components.

The VTM has been manufactured in accordance with current
engineering standards and safety regulations. Even so, there is a
risk of injury or damage if the following general safety instructions
and the specific warnings given in this instruction manual are not
observed.
O Read these instructions completely before working with the
VTM.
O Keep these instructions in a location where they are accessible
to all users at all times.
O Always include the operating instructions when you pass the
VTM on to third parties.
3.1 Intended use
O The VTM may only be used within the limits listed in the
technical data.
O The VTM is primarily intended to be used in industrial
applications.
Intended use includes having read and understood these
instructions, especially the chapter “For your safety”.
3.2 Improper use
It is considered improper use when the VTM
W is used for any application not stated in these instructions, or
W is used under operating conditions that deviate from those
described in these instructions.

3.3 Personnel qualifications
Installation, connection and commissioning require fundamental
knowledge of electronics and pneumatics, as well as knowledge of
the applicable technical terminology. For this reason, the device
may only be installed, connected and commissioned by a specialist
in electronics and pneumatics or by a person under the control and
supervision of such a specialist.
Qualified personnel are those who can recognize possible hazards
and institute the appropriate safety measures due to their
professional training, knowledge, and experience, as well as their
understanding of the relevant conditions pertaining to the work to
be done. Qualified personnel must observe the rules relevant to
the subject area.
3.4 Safety instructions
In this document, there are safety instructions before the steps
whenever there is a danger of personal injury or damage to the
equipment. The measures described to avoid these hazards must
be followed.
Safety instructions are set out as follows:
W Safety sign: draws attention to the risk
W Signal word: identifies the degree of hazard
W Type of risk: identifies the type or source of the hazard
W Consequences: describes what occurs when the safety
instructions are not complied with
W Precautions: states how the hazard can be avoided

The signal words have the following meaning:
3.5 Observe the following for the VTM
In pneumatic systems, good design aims to minimise the risk of
failure or injury in the event of malfunctions.
Particular attention must be paid to the following:
W Collisions between moving parts must not be possible.
W Unexpected and unwanted cylinder movements must not be
possible to occur.
W Vented strokes must not be possible (ie a cylinder movement
when the opposite chamber is not pressurised).
General information W Observe the local regulations to protect the environment in the
country of use and to avoid workplace accidents.
W The VTM must never be altered or modified from its original
configuration.
W The VTM may only be used within the power ranges stated in
the technical description. See the product catalogue.

Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could
result in death or serious injury.

If this information is disregarded, the operating procedure may be

Damage may occur when built-in protection is bypassed
When you tamper with sensors or control signals to valves you bypass any built-in
protection. This increases the risk of injury to personnel and damage to equipment.
O Vented strokes are especially serious. Here there is a risk of extremely high speeds,
which may lead to failures in which the load comes loose and goes outside the normal
area of action.

On installation W Position cables where people cannot trip over them.
Maintenance W Never use solvents or strong detergents. Never hose down the
VTM with water. Clean the VTM only with a cloth slightly
moistened with water or a mild detergent.
Waste disposal W Dispose of the device in accordance with local regulations.

7 Instructions
7.1 Commissioning
Note: The cylinder may only be commissioned by a specialist in
pneumatics or by a person under the control and supervision
of such a specialist (see “Personnel qualifications”, page 31).
7.2 Velocity measurement
Note: The meter can only measure the velocity of cylinders that
have a magnet.

1. Plug the connector of the probe (1) into the meter.
2. Switch on the instrument by pressing “On”.
3. The word “Velocity” appears on the display. If not, press the
function button repeatedly until it does.
4. Press “Enter” to choose velocity measurement.
5. Position the probe at least one metre from powerful magnets
or wires carrying a high current, and calibrate it by pressing
“Cal”.

6. The meter is now ready to be used for velocity measurement.

7. Position the locating edge (1) of the probe in the sensor slot of
the cylinder. Apply the probe to the point on the stroke of the
cylinder where you want to know the velocity of the cylinder.
You can use the strap to fix the probe in place.
8. The arrow on the probe must be pointing in the direction of
motion of the cylinder (2).
9. Press “Enter” to set the instrument to standby for
measurement.
10. When the sensors have registered the passing of the piston, the
velocity appears on the display.
11. To repeat the velocity measurement, press “Enter” to set the
instrument to standby for measurement.
Explanation The position of the sensors in the probe is indicated by two marks
in the form of dots. VTM measures the time taken by the piston to
travel between the two dots and calculates the average velocity.
Usually it is the peak velocity of the cylinder before the piston
reaches the damping position that is measured.
Limitations The meter is limited to velocities up to 9.99 m/s. If you measure the
velocity in the wrong direction, “Error” appears on the display.

7.3 Time measurement with PNP sensors
Only valid for VTM adjusted for PNP.
7.3.1 Measurement with two proximity sensors

1. Apply the sensors (1) to the cylinder.
2. Using the extension cables (see item 5 on page 34), connect the
M8 connectors (2) of the sensors to the meter, as shown.
3. Switch on the instrument by pressing “On”.
4. Repeatedly press the function button until the display shows
“Time”.
5. Press “Enter” to choose time measurement.
6. Press the flank setting button until a falling and a rising flank
appears on the display (3).
7. Press “Enter”. The display shows “Start ?”.
8. Press “Enter” again to start measurement.
9. To repeat the time measurement, press “Enter” to set the
instrument to standby for measurement.
Explanation With a falling flank, triggering takes place when the voltage goes
from high to low. With a rising flank, triggering takes place when
the voltage goes from low to high.

In the example above, initially the right-hand sensor is low and the
left-hand sensor is high. The meter waits for the cylinder to begin
its plus motion so that the left-hand sensors goes low and timing
can start. At the end of the stroke, the right-hand sensor goes high,
measurement ends and the time difference between the two
flanks is displayed.
Limitations The longest possible measuring time is 60 seconds.
7.4 Measurement with valve control box

1. Apply the sensor to the cylinder (1).
2. Connect the M8 cable between the box and the “Start”
connector of the meter (2).

3. Connect the two M12 connectors to the box and connect the
cables to the pilot connections of the valve (3).
4. Connect the mains adapter (24 V) (4).
5. Switch on the instrument by pressing “On”.
6. Repeatedly press the function button until the display shows
“Time”.
7. Press “Enter” to choose time measurement.
8. Repeatedly press the flank setting button until the display
shows two rising flanks (5).
9. Press “Enter”. The display shows “Start ?”.
10. Press “Enter” again to start measurement.
11. To start a new time measurement, press “Enter” to set the
instrument to standby for measurement.
Explanation When the switch on the box is turned to “Start”, a signal is sent to
the instrument and to the M12 “Start” connector. When the switch
is turned to “Return”, a signal is sent to the M12 connector
“Return”. The cylinder is sent to the starting position. For unistable
valves, only the “Start” connector is connected.
7.4.1 Time measurement with NPN sensors
Only valid for VTM adjusted for NPN.

1. Apply the sensors (1) to the cylinder.
2. Using the extension cables (see item 5 on page 34), connect the
M8 connectors (2) of the sensors to the meter, as shown.
3. Switch on the instrument by pressing “On”.

appears on the display (3).
7. Press “Enter”. The display shows “Start ?”.

8 Care and maintenance
The VTM is maintenance-free and does not normally require any
particular care or maintenance.
Batteries If the meter is to be left unused for a long time, we recommend
removing the batteries.
8.1 Care
8.2 Maintenance
Normally the VTM requires no maintenance.
O However, observe the maintenance intervals that apply to the
system in which the VTM is installed, and see the points below.
8.2.1 Check the cables
O Check occasionally that all cables are securely connected.
Replace damaged and crushed lines.
8.3 Waste disposal
Careless disposal of waste my result in environmental pollution
and failure to recycle raw materials.
O Scrap the device in accordance with local regulations.
NOTICE
The unit may be damaged by solvents and aggressive cleaning agents.
O Use only a slightly damp cloth to clean the unit. For cleaning, use only a little water or
mild detergent. If aggressive chemicals are used, the VTM may be damaged or its life
may be shortened.
