First,connectaTPL304E200MbpsPowerlineAVAdapterwithBonusOutlettoaLANportonthe
routersothatthePowerlinenetworkcanaccesstheInternet.
NOTE:DonotconnectthePowerlineadaptertoapowerstrip,extensioncord,orsurgeprotectoras
thismaypreventitfromworkingproperlyordegradethenetworkperformance.
a. PlugtheEthernetcablethatcameintheboxintoaLANportonyourrouterorswitchin
yournetwork.
b. PlugthePowerlineadapterintoanelectricaloutletneartherouter.
c. PlugtheotherendofEthernetcablethatcameintheboxintothePowerline adapter.
Checkthestatuslights:
Power:ThepowerLEDturnssolidgreen.Ifitdoesnot,seeChapter2,
“Troubleshooting”.
PowerLink:ThePowerLinkLEDblinkstoindicatethatthedeviceisconnectedto
thepowerline,andthatnootherPowerlinedeviceshavebeendetectedatthis
stage.
EthernetLink:TheEthernetLEDblinkstoindicateactivity.Ifnot,makesurethat
theEthernetcableonthePowerlineadapterthatyouconnectedintheprevious
stepissecurelyattachedtothePowerlineadapterandtherouter,thattherouteris
connectedtothemodem,andtherouterandmodemarepoweredon.
d. MakesurethattheInternetportofyourrouterisconnectedtoyourmodem,andthatyour
computeriseitherconnectedtoaLANportontherouterortoaportonthePowerline
adapter.
ConnectotherPowerlineAdapters
1. BeforeplugginginyourotherPowerlinedevices,takeanoteofthedevicepasswordprintedon
thelabelonthebackofeachdevice.Youwillneedthispasswordlaterifyouwanttochangethe
Powerlinenetworkpassword.IfyouareaddingmorethanoneotherPowerlineadapter,also
notetheMACaddressgivenonthelabel,sothatyouwillknowwhichdevicethepasswordis
for.
2. PlugyourotherPowerlinedevicesintopoweroutletsinyourhomeneartotheothercomputers
andperipheralstobeincludedinyourPowerlinelocalareanetwork.
3. Usean
EthernetcabletoconnectanEthernetportoneachofthecomputersandperipheralsto
thenearestPowerlinedevice.
4. WhenyoupluginasecondPowerlineadapterintoapoweroutlet,checktheblueHomePlug
LEDs.TheyshouldturnonandthenbrieflyblinkatthesametimeastheEthernetactivityLED.
ThiscompletesthePowerlineinstallation.
InstalltheUtility
TheutilitygivesyoutheoptionofsettingauniqueencryptionPowerlinenetworkpassword.
Importantfeatures:
z Theencryptionpasswordiscasesensitive.(locatedonthedevicelabel)
z Eachdevicemustbesettoexactlythesameencryptionpassword—iftheyareto
communicateonthesamenetwork.Powerlinedevicesondifferentnetworkswillnotbeable
tocommunicate.
z Adefaultbuttonresetstheencryptionpasswordtothedefaultpassword(HomePlugAV).
z Theencryptionpasswordcanprotectyournetworkfromunauthorizedaccessthroughthe
Powerlinenetwork.
z AdevicepasswordisprintedoneachPowerlineproduct.Thisisnotthe
networkpassword,
butyouarerequiredtoenteritifyouaresettingthenetworkpasswordwithanother
Powerlineadapterdevice.
ToinstallthePowerlineEncryptionUtility,followthesesteps:
1. InserttheTPL304E/TPL304E2KCDROMintoaCDROMdriveonthecomputerthatis
connectedtoyourrouter.TheCDwillstartupautomatically.
IftheCDdoesnotstartautomatically:
GotoMyComputerontheWindowsStartmenu,anddoubleclickthedrivethat
containstheTPL304E/TPL304E2KCDor
SelecttheCDdriveandclickontheAutorun.exeexecutablefile.
All devices on a Powerline network can be managed from one computer. If you add another
TPL304E device to an existing Powerline network, you can install the Powerline encryption
utility on the computer connected locally to the new TPL304E device or on the computer
originallyusedtosetupthePowerlinenetworkpassword.Youcanuseanycomputertomanage
the network, but this procedure assumes that you are working from the computer that is
connectedtoyourrouter.
2. ClickInstallUtilitytostarttheinstallation
Priortotheutilityinstallation,itwillpromptyoutoinstalltheWinPcapprogram.ClickNextto
continue.
3. Thenthepowerlineutilityinstallationwillstart,clickNexttocontinue
4. ClickNextandfollowtheinstructionsonthescreen.
5. TheInstallShieldWizardindicatesthattheinstallationiscomplete.ClickClose.
SetYourPrivateNetworkName
Thefastestandmostreliablewaytosetthenetworknameistosetthepasswordforalldevicesat
once.Todothis,youneedthedevicepasswordonthebacklabelofeachPowerlinedevice.Thereare
twostepstosettingthenetworkname:firstenterthedevicepasswordforeachremotePowerline
device,andthensetthenetworkname.
1. EnterthedevicepasswordforeachremotePowerlinedevice:
a. MakesurethatallPowerlinedevicesarepluggedinto100~240VACwallsockets.
b. StartthePowerlineencryptionutility
Note:Accessingtheutilityforthefirsttime,youmightreceivethefollowingwarningmessage,please
connectOKtocontinue.
c. CheckthattheutilitylistsalltheremotePowerlinedevices.
d. SelectaPowerlinedeviceand,ifmorethanoneremotedeviceislisted,identifyitfromthe
MACaddress.
e. ClickEnterPassword.
f. EnterthepasswordrecordedfromthelabelonthebackoftheselectedPowerlinedevice.
g. ClickOK.
h. Repeatthisstepforalldevicesthatyouwantattachedtoyournetwork.
2. SetthePrivateNetworkName
i. SelectthePrivacytab.
a. TypeaNameinthePrivateNetworkNametextbox.
b. ClickSetAllDevices.Apopupwindowindicatesthattheoperationwassuccessful.
AddaDevicetoanExistingPowerlineNetwork
ToaddadevicetoaPowerlinenetworkwiththedefaultnetworkpassword,allyouneedtodoisplug
thenewdeviceintoapoweroutlet.
Ifthenetworknamehasbeenset,thenyouwillneedtorunthePowerlineencryptionutilitytosetthe
newdevicetothenetworkname.Howyoudothisdependsonwhetherthecomputerrunningthe
PowerlineencryptionutilityisconnnecteddirectlytothenewPowerlinedevice(local)orisconnected
toadifferentdeviceinthePowerlinenetwork(remote).
AddingaNewDevicefromaLocallyConnectedComputer
1. PlugthenewPowerlinedeviceintoanavailableACpoweroutletandconnectittoanEthernet
portonthecomputer.
2. StartthePowerlineencryptionutilityandselecttheSecuritytab.
3. TypethenetworknameinthePrivateNetworkNametextboxandclickSetLocalDeviceOnly.
4. SelecttheMaintabandcheckthattheotherdevicesinthePowerlinenetworkappearinthe
devicelist.Itmaytakeaminuteortwoforalldevicesinthenetworktobedetected.
AddingaNewDevicefromaRemotelyConnectedComputer
1. NotethedevicepasswordgivenonthelabelonthebackofthenewPowerlinedevice.
2. PlugthenewPowerlinedeviceintoanACpoweroutlet.
3. StartthePowerlineencryptionutilityontheremotecomputerandselecttheSecuritytab.
4. ClickUseDefault(PublicNetwork).ThepasswordinthePrivateNetworkPasswordtextbox
changestothedefaultpassword,HomeAVPlug.
5. ClickSetAllDevices.
6. SelecttheMaintabandwaitforthenewPowerlinedevicetobelisted.
7. SelectthenewPowerlinedevicefromthedevicelist,andclickEnterPassword.
8. Inthe
popupwindow,enterthepasswordfromthebacklabelofthedeviceandclickOK.
9. SelectthePrivacytab.
10. ReenterthenetworknameinthePrivateNetworkNametextbox,andthenclickSetAll
Devices.
Troubleshooting
ThischaptergivesinformationabouttroubleshootingyourTPL304E/TPL304E2KMbps WallMount
EthernetAdapter.Aftereachproblemdescription,instructionsareprovidedtohelpyoudiagnoseand
solvetheproblem.
BasicFunctioning
AfteryoupluginthePowerlineadapter,thefollowingsequenceofeventsshouldoccur:
1. Whenpowerisfirstapplied,verifythatthePowerlightison.
2. Afterapproximately10seconds,checktheLEDsonthePowerlineadapter.Thefollowingshould
occur:
c. ThepowerLEDissolidgreen.
a. ThegreenPowerLinkLEDislit.
b. TheEthernetLEDblinks.
Ifanyoftheseconditionsdoesnotoccur,refertotheappropriatefollowingsection.
z PowerLightNotOn
Make sure that, if power to the AC power outlet is controlled by a wall switch, the wall
switchisintheonposition.
Verifythatthewallsocketislive.Todothis, disconnectthePowerlineadapterandplugin
anotherelectricalproduct,suchasalamporahairdryer.
IfthePowerLEDstilldoesnotcomeon,andyouhaveconfirmedthepoweroutletislive,you
haveahardwareproblemandshouldcontacttechnicalsupport.
z PowerLinkLightNotOn
IfthepowerlightisonbutthePowerLinklightisnot,checkthefollowing:
MakesurethatpowerisbeingprovidedtomorethanonePowerlinedevice.
AnotherPowerlinedevicemustbeinstalledforsuccessfulcommunicationacross
thePowerline.
VerifythatthenetworkpasswordisthesameonalldevicesinthePowerline
network.
z EthernetLightisOff
MakesurethattheEthernetcableispluggedinproperlyatbothends.
Besurethatyouareusingthecorrectcableon
therouterthatthefirstPowerline
adapterisconnectedto.Whenconnectingtherouter’sInternetporttoacableor
DSLmodem,usethecablethatwassuppliedwiththecableorDSLmodem.This
cablecouldbeastandardstraightthroughEthernetcableoranEthernetcrossover
cable.
On
theattachedEthernetdeviceornetworkadaptercard,checkthattheLinklight
ison.
Syncthedevice
Press the Syncbutton for 3 seconds to synchronizethe encryption keyand connect to the
existingnetwork.
Resetthedevice
PresstheResetorSyncbuttonfor10seconds,thepowerlineadaptersettingswillberesetto
factorydefaultvalue.
PowerSaving
Theunitwillautomaticallyreducethepowerusagewhentheconnecteddeviceispowered
off,unpluggedornotactiveformorethan10minutes.
