Quick Start Guide

Pre-Installation Checklist

Before beginning the actual installation, the Site Implementation Engineer must perform the following tasks:

Step 1. Check the packing list to verify all ordered equipment has been

received. The box should contain:

HCA 7204

CD ROM(s) containing:

Technical Documentation

Release Notes

Software

Step 2. Unpack the box.

Step 3. Inspect all contents for any shipping damage.

NOTE: Any shipping damage should be reported to the shipping company.

Step 4. Verify that the equipment shipped matches the packing list.

Hardware Installation

Tools and Equipment Required

An ESD wrist strap

Standard and Phillips head screwdrivers

Install HCA 7204 Hardware

NOTE: Remove any existing HCA software and associated hardware from the server prior to installing the HCA 7204.

Step 1. Shut down the server’s operating system.

Step 2. Power down the server.

Step 3. Remove covers as required to provide access to the server’s PCI

slots.

NOTE: Wear an anti-static wristband before proceeding to the next step.

Step 4. Install the HCA 7204 Card in an x4 (or greater) PCI-Express slot.

Step 5. Replace covers on the server.

Step 6. Boot the server.

Connect the HCA

Step 1. Connect an IB-compliant cable to an IB port on the HCA,

Step 2. Connect the other end of the cable to one of the following:

1. A SilverStorm™ 9024 or 9000 Series Multi-Protocol Fabric Director.

2. A third-party IB switch.

NOTE: For non-redundant installations, ensure that the IB cable is connected to port 1 on a dual-port HCA.

Installing QLogic IB Basic software components

NOTE: If the system has an existing HCA, remove the HCA and any of associated software.

Installing from a CD

Step 1. Insert the CD.

Step 2. Login as user root and mount the CD as follows:

mount -r /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

(if the system requests a file system type, use -t iso 9660). For example:

mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

Step 3. Go to the following install directory:

cd /mnt/cdrom/SOFTWARE

Step 4. Unpack from CD to /root directory:

tar zxvf QLogicIB-Basic.<VERSION>.tgz -C /root

Step 5. Change directory to root/QLogicIB-Basic-<VERSION>.

cd /root/QLogicIB-Basic-<VERSION>

Step 6. Execute the following command to launch the install script.

./INSTALL.sh

Step 7. After completing the installaiton, unmount the CD as follows:

cd /

umount /dev/cdrom

Installing Documentation from a CD

Installing Documentation on a Linux Host

Step 1. Place the product CD in the CD-ROM drive.

Step 2. Check that the CD has been mounted. Type:

ls /mnt/cdrom.

The system returns a list of files on the CD.

Step 3. Create a subdirectory on the drive where the documentation will

reside.

Step 4. Copy the documentation to the subdirectory created in Step 3.

Type:

cp /mnt/cdrom/ <SUBDIRECTORY NAME>/<SUBDIRECTORY NAME>

Step 5. Navigate to the subdirectory created in Step 3 and open the

applicable PDF file.
