Network Testing’s well-known
benchmarking solutions QVoice Symphony
and QVoice Presentation.
InSIGhT InTo QUALITy
In order to attract and retain satisfied customers, operators must combat the
number one source of dissatisfaction: poor quality stemming directly from inadequate
services or weak network performance. The TEMS Symphony benchmarking solutions
give insight into the customer’s experience of both voice and IP-based messaging, and
video services from the operator and the competition. This information is crucial for
making network improvements, changes, and investments that will improve customer
satisfaction.
QVoice Symphony is a Quality of Service (QoS) wireless benchmarking solution
for cellular network operators. Providing voice, data, and video service testing, both
offer a wide range of supported phone and data cards and a modular configuration
for easy installation and operation. QVoice Symphony is paired with our QVoice
Presentation software for optimal post-processing.

QVoice Companion
QVoice Symphony
QVoice Symphony measurements are possible on all generations of
cellular networks (2G, 2.5G, 3G and 4G). They are organized into two groups:
Subscriber View
QVoice Symphony collects Quality of Service measurements including
real speech and video quality, drop call rates, failed call rates, SMS/MMS/
e-mail success rates and delivery times, FTP/UDP/HTTP throughputs, and
other IP-data parameters.
Engineering View
QVoice Symphony delivers detailed air interface information such as
signal strength, signal quality, interference, serving/neighbor cells, layer 3
messages and more. This engineering information allows drill down and
detailed analysis of the reasons for low QoS in the network.
QoS Measurements
Mobile speech call test parameters are user-defined and can be MOC,
MTC, MOC/MTC mixed, or mobile-mobile. The speech signal direction can be
uplink, downlink or half-duplex. Call duration, retry interval, pauses, and
other criteria can be pre-programmed.
Important voice benchmarking KPIs are as follows:
Service Accessibility – percentage of call attempts that fail
Call Setup Time – delay time before a call starts ringing
Retainability – how often subscribers are not interrupted by
dropped calls
Voice Quality – a value of voice quality scores as classified to a
vast majority of user (MOS)

TEMS™ SYMPHONY SUITE
Mobile data tests assess network performance with respect to trans-
ferring data and messages. There are suites of test protocols available for
QVoice systems including HTTP, FTP, UDP, WAP, SMS/MMS, PING and e-mail.
IP-Data KPIs are:
Service accessibility
Setup time
Session time
Mean data rate
Data transfer cut-off ratio
Technical Data Collection Features
Best algorithms for speech, video, and audio testing – industrial
and ITU standards
Video telephony clips are directly feed into the mobile device
Video telephony clips on the screen of the mobile device are
captured electronically
Referenced and unreferenced video algorithms
Speech MOS values displayed in real time during tests
Compact measurement data files
On-line display of AMR codec status
Video quality MOS algorithm on mobile video applications
Real speech quality
In-band audio problem detection with silence, level jump, echo,
gaps
Mobile data tests: FTP, UDP, Ping, HTTP, SMS, MMS, E-Mail
Mobile application protocol stack (e.g. MMS/WAP)
Measurement trigger points precisely defined per ETSI
Protocol messages recorded with air interface layer 3 data
Combined test mobile phone and scanner measurements
Subscriber view of QoS in uplink and downlink
Simulation of subscriber behavior
Live recording and call statistics
Detailed decoding of engineering data: layer 3, RLC/MAC messages
Measurements over different air interfaces: GSM, GPRS, , EDGE,
WCDMA, CDMA-1X
Supports latest technologies: HSDPA/HSUPA, WiMAX (4G), CDMA
EV-DO
GPRS/EDGE transmission specific data: TBF usage, QoS fulfillment,
time used/time wasted.

Devices supported
QVoice Symphony supports a wide range of mobiles for all type of
tests, including speech and video telephony as well as data tests. The
devices cover multi-frequency bands for: GSM, GPRS, EDGE, WCDMA, HSPA,
HSPA+, CDMA1X, and EV-DO, and LTE technologies.
QVoice Symphony supports datacards and USB modems for testing
IP-based services as well as scanner receivers for RF coverage and interfer-
ence analysis in multi-band and frequency versions optimized for different
geographical areas.
Advanced Service Testing
The advanced service testing features in QVoice Symphony are exten-
sive, including VoIP testing between 2 cellular mobile subscribers or between
a cellular mobile user and a user connected via LAN or WiLAN to the internet.
QVoice Symphony is at the forefront of data testing; for example, it
supports benchmarking of mobile video. Mobile video covers the realm of
both creating and forwarding video clips as well as watching content created
by others. Video clips can be downloaded and the quality of video content
can be assessed.
All mobile video services are vulnerable to transmission errors that can
be distracting and unpleasant to subscribers. Accurate measurement and
assessment of these disturbances are realized using either ‘referenced’ or
‘non-referenced’ algorithms. The first is best used where a smaller range of
video content is the norm, for example in Video Telephony. However, for
applications where the video content cannot be known beforehand, such as
Mobile Streaming, a ‘non-referenced’ algorithm is necessary. QVoice Symphony
offers the best algorithms for both methodologies.
QVoice Symphony is also equipped to handle the latest technologies
including HSDPA/HSUPA, WIMAX (4G), and CDMA EV-DO.

Standard Service Testing
For benchmarking speech applications, MOS is still the main criteria of
comparison. But with QVoice Symphony, MOS values are supplemented with
detection of degradation effects caused by echo, silence breaks, and level
jumps, which influence the quality of the user’s experience. ‘Live Recording’
is another unique feature.
Testing mobile IP-data applications is equally innovative. Capabilities
range from ICMP-ping measurements, HTTP download/upload, and FTP
upload /download, to UDP message transfer, email upload/download, and
full tracing of signaling. SMS or MMS tests are done from mobile to mobile
with measurements performed according to ETSI defined trigger points.
QVoice Companion
A cost-efficient, easy-to-handle tool for field testing, QVoice Companion
delivers QVoice Symphony functionality in a highly portable solution. QVoice
Companion can be packaged in a backpack, with self-contained batteries
for independent operation. This is especially useful for testing in pedestrian-
only areas.
QVoice Presentation
This multi-functional post-processing tool streamlines analysis and
reporting tasks for presenting TEMS Symphony Suite data. QVoice
Presentation can generate 100+ benchmarking reports out of the box.
Measurement data can be selected in flexible ways, and data collected on
different ends (such as from mobile phone and PSTN lines) are merged
together and synchronized. With QVoice Presentation Expert, automatic
classification and analysis of problematic calls or data tasks can be per-
formed easily without assistance from an expert engineer.
QVoice Presentation delivers in-depth information that is accurate and
comprehensive, yet easy to interpret. Screen presentations are user-con-
trolled and are divided into Subscriber and Engineering Views.
These comprehensive offerings provide the types of net-
work performance analysis required throughout the organization
from optimization engineers and the testing and benchmarking
staff to the top managers. The solutions help operators prioritize
network enhancement and troubleshooting projects, which
improves the efficiency of operations. Encompassing field
measurements , analysis, final reports, and network improvement
data, our offerings provide the accurate, comprehensive informa-
tion operators require to make intelligent business decisions.
