Overview
TheET100ANetworkBridgeisahighperformance,remote,
selflearningEthernetbridge.Itscompactsizeandlowcostmakeitideal
forcost sensitivebridgingappli cations,orasaLANextenderorsegmenter
overbitstreamtypeinfrastructures.Severalselectablesynchronousdata
interfaces,includingV.35,RS530,RS449,X.21,andRS232,makethis
EthernetBridge'sconnectionbetween10BaseTand100BaseTXLANand
variousSYNCdataportinterfacesconvenient.

Supports raw HDLC, Cisco® HDLC, and PPP encapsulation
10BASE-T/100BASE-TX, Full Duplex or Half Duplex
HP Auto-MDI/MDIX detects and corrects crossed cable
Automatic address learning, aging and deletion after 5 minutes
Forwarding and filtering rate at wire speed with through put latency of
1 frame.
Auto padding of undersized packets to meet the minimum Ethernet
packet size requirement

Ethernet interface has automatic Twisted Pair polarity correction

Theory of Operation
Abridgeisusedtoconnectnetworkslocallyorremotelysuchthat
theyappeartotheusertobethesamenetwork.AnEthernetLANbridge
willconnecttwoLANsegmentsattheDataLinkLayer(ISOLayer2).Atthis
layer,theMAC(MediaAccessControl)addresses,areusedforlowlevel
addressingtosendinformationtodevices.ThebridgebuildstablesofMAC
addressesforeachnetworksegmentbasedonthesourceanddestination
addressesofthepacketsitreceivesand forwards,thenfiltersthetraffic
notdestinedfortheremotenetwork.
TheEthernetWANbridgewillconnecttworemoteEthernet
networksoverbitstreaminterfacessuchasthatofsynchronousmodems
orDSU/CSUs.OnemethodtodothisistouseHDLC,aninternational
standardsetbytheISO,asetofprotocolsforcarryingdataoveralinkwith
errorandflowcontrol.AnothermethodusesPPPandathirdusesCisco®
HDLC.
TheET100AutilizesbothEthernetBridgingandencapsulationto
provideaconnectionbetweenLANsoverbitstreamarchitectures.The
LANsideoftheET100AreceivesanEthernetpacketandexaminesits
destinationMACaddress.IfitknowstheMACisonthelocalnetworkthen
itsimplydropsthepack et.Otherwise,ifitknowsthepacketdestinationis
ontheremoteside,orifitcannotbedeterminedbecauseitsMACcannot
befoundinthetable,thenitforwardsit.Duringforwarding,thepacketis
processedfortransmissionacrosstheWANlink.Hereiswherethe
Ethernetpack etinencapsulated.

WhentheHDLCorPPPpacketisreceivedontheremotesideuni t's
dataport,thepack etischeckedfortransmissionerrors,thentheoriginal
Ethernetpack et(s)isrecoveredandsentouttheremote'sLANport

theapplicationr equiresabitstreamtobeencapsulatedintoEthernet
packets,orintoTCP /IPandthenEthernet,fortransmissionacrosstheLAN.
ThisrequiresmorethanjustmanipulationattheDataLinklayer(ISOLayer
2),itrequiresprogrammingtoincludeallsevenlayersincludingthe
Applicationlayer.TransmittingbitstreamorTDM(timedivision
multiplexed)dataoverEthernetrequiresadevicesuchasan
IPMultiplexer.

totheOFFposition.
Autonegotiation:
When this feature is enabled (SW16=OFF), the Speed (SW17) and
Duplex (SW18) settings are ignored and are automatically determined
fromtheLAN connection. Whenthisfeature is disabled(SW16=ON), the
Duplex and Speed settings of the LAN follow the settings of SW17 and
SW18.UseforcedmodewithcautiontoavoidDuplexMismatch.
ProtocolSelection:
TheET100Asupportsselectingoneofthreeencapsulationprotocols.
WhenselectingHDLC,theencapsulationisperISO13239.ThecHDLC
encapsulationiscompatiblewithCisco®modifiedHDLC.ThePPP
encapsulationfollowsRFC1661andisalsoaverypopularencapsulation
protocol.TheprotocolselectioniscontrolledbythesettingofDIPswitches
SW11andSW12.
ClockSelection:
TheET100AinherentlyactsasaDTEdevice.A1:1cableisusedto
connecttoaDCEdevicesuchasamodem,CSU/DSUordatamultiplexer.
ClocksourcecomesfromtheDCEsotheclocksettingisusuallyexternal
(SW14OFF).TheET100Aisalsocapableofactingasa DCE.In thiscasea
crossovercableisrequiredandclocksetting(SW14ON)isinternal.Data
rateisthensetbySW2,3~9andET100Aprovidesclocksource.

LANFlowControl:
TheET100ALANportsupportsIEEE802.3xflowcontrol,whichcan
helptoregulatethehigherspeedLANtrafficthathitsthebottleneckof
theslowerWANspeed.Withoutflowcontrol,theLANpacketsthatexceed
theWANspeedwillbedroppedandtheresultingtimeoutcausedmustbe
handledbytheapplicationlayer.
LANAutoNegotiation:
TheET100ALANportsupportsautonegotiationperIEEE802.3u.
WhenautonegotiationisenabledandtheLANportconnectstoanother
autonegotiationcompliantport,theLANspeedwillbeautodetected
whiletheDuplexshouldbenegotiatedtoFullDuplex.
Whenconnectingtolegacyequipment,itmaybenecessaryto'force'
thespeedandDuplexontheLANport.Caremustbetak enheretoavoida
DuplexMismatchconditionwhena'forced'portconnectstoan'auto'port.
Withoutnegotiation,an'auto'portwillreverttoHalfDuplexperthe
IEEE802.3ustandard.ADuplexMismatchconditioncouldresultin
extremelypoornetworkperformance.
