How to use this manual
The purpose of this manual is to provide detailed information about
the different types of 12 – pulse converter configurations, their op-
eration principles, their various applications, the required hard-
ware/software/parameters and the start up of a 12 – pulse configu-
ration consisting of DCS 600 series thyristor power converters.
Note: All details given in this manual are valid for DCS 600
series converters even if not explicitly mentioned!

Definition of 12 – pulse
technology
The characteristic features of the 12 – pulse technology are:
• a DC drive comprising two 6 – pulse thyristor converters;
• a 12 – pulse line transformer providing the AC power for both
converters from separated transformer secondary windings
whose phase positions differ by 30°. An example for such a
transformer configuration is ∆ / / ∆ .
Advantages of
12 – pulse technology
The most significant advantages of 12 – pulse technology are:
• Reduced level of harmonics on the AC side for 12 – pulse
parallel and serial configurations

2.1 Types of 12 – pulse configurations
ABB offers different types of 12 – pulse configurations:

In this
12 – pulse parallel configuration the motor gets the sum of
the DC current of two converters. Thus the current is doubled.
An emergency operation is possible with full armature voltage and
with 50 % of the former maximum torque.

In this 12 – pulse serial configuration the motor gets the sum of the
DC voltage of two converters. Thus the voltage is doubled.

Sequential configura-
tion
The power circuit of this sequential configuration (Figure 2/3) is identi-
cal to that of the 12 – pulse serial configuration except that in most
cases the phase positions of the two transformer secondary windings
are identical (e.g. transformer configuration
∆ / ∆ / ∆ ). The motor gets
the sum of the DC voltage of two converters but both voltages are
normally not equal. This is the main difference to the 12-pulse opera-
tion mode. In consequence the motor must cope with a normal 6-pulse
ripple of the armature current, and the line current is not free from the
so-called 6-pulse harmonics.

Sequential control means that the DC voltage of only one converter
varies in order to control the armature current until firing angle has
reached the maximum or minimum limit and then the other converter
starts contolling the DC voltage.
Depending on the armature voltage the first or the second converter
operates with constant voltage or firing angle while the other one
works with varying values.

In this combination speed control is performed by the master
whereas current and field control are carried out by the master and
the follower. Each motors is supplied with a 6 – pulse current. But
the line current on the primary side of the power transformer is a
12 – pulse current.
Note: The 12 – pulse link
(V260) is not used in this configuration.
Required settings of master-follower configuration are
not handled in this manual!
For safety reasons a protection against shaft breakdown
and overspeed of the follower must be considered.

The T-reactor also known as interphase transformer (Figure 2/7) ab-
sorbes the instantaneous difference between the output voltages of
both converters (master and slave). This voltage difference is an AC
voltage with a maximum amplitude of 50 % of the peak value of the AC
input voltage of the converters.
The almost rectangular form of this voltage results in a nearly triangu-
lar AC current in the T-reactor.This magnetising current is superposed
by the difference of the DC current produced by both converters. How-
ever this difference is monitored by the master converter and the cur-
rent controllers of the master-slave drive configuration is able to limit it
to below 2 %.
T-reactors delivered from ABB Automation Products GmbH, Lampert-
heim have enough margin in this case, because they are designed for
10 % saturation current.
T-reactors provide a typical 12 – pulse voltage ripple characteristic to
the motor (higher frequency and lower amplitude) resulting in a current
which has four times less ripple than in a standard 6 – pulse configura-
tion.

The sizing of a T-reactor is done in a similar way to that of an auto-

To be able to deliver the correct T-reactor for the drive the following
data will be needed: - AC converter input voltage
- Line frequency
- Motor duty load cycle
If the drive is used for non motoric applications a much more detailed
information is needed, such as resistance , inductivity and capacity of
the load as well as requested du/dt characteristics of the converter
output voltage.
2.3 Line/power transformers used in 12 – pulse configurations
The following details have to be taken into consideration for line/
power transformers used in 12 – pulse configurations:
• When selecting and dimensioning the 12 – pulse line trans-
former, care must be taken to ensure that overvoltages are kept
away from the converter’s power section when mains supply is
fed to the transformer. For this reason, the transformer should
have an earthed shielding winding between the primary and the
secondary windings which is also very useful for suppressing
capacitive feedthrough during switching operations on the pri-
mary side. In addition, the shielding winding also suppresses
cable-related interferences (EMC) to the network.
• Another method for avoiding overvoltages is to switch on the
components gradually. First feed the mains supply to the
transformer, and then allow the power to flow between the
transformer and the converter. Another option is to incorporate
an R-C element on the secondary side.
• Dimensioning is determined solely by the electrical conditions
involved, like mains voltage, converter supply voltage, converter
rated current and frequency.

It is not possible to connect two 12-pulse systems at the same 12-
pulse transformer.
Reason: The voltage level between the star-delta winding is controlled
by the switching (control angle) of the first configuration. Connecting a
second configuration will create a circulating current.

2.4 Earth fault (insulation) monitoring

If the base unit type IRDH 265 - 3 is used for higher voltages a sup-
plementary unit of the type AGH xxx will be required according to the
BENDER documentation.
The result of the combination of a base unit and of a supplementary
unit is that the Rm values are higher than 60kΩ + 34kΩ = 94kΩ or
than 40kΩ + 34kΩ = 74kΩ. However, a supplementary unit is not
shown in the following figures in order to keep them clear. The figures
shall clarify the principles only, not the detailed solutions.
The 34kΩ base resistance includes the 4.2 kΩ winding resistance
of a high inductive choke. Therefore the base AC impedance is
higher than 34kΩ.

logical to connect the insulation monitor with the motor as shown in
Fig.2/10 because the DC circuit is the centre of symmetry of the
whole power circuit. Furthermore, the risk of an insulation fault is
higher in the motor than in the converters or in the transformer.

Figure 2/11 is the synopsis of an insulated DC drive in a 12 – pulse
serial configuration with two thyristor power converters and one
motor, with a dedicated power transformer and with one insulation
monitor unit type IRDH from BENDER.
In this case it is obvious that the insulation monitor unit must be in-
stalled at the DC side.

2.5 Advanced current measurement
DC drives from ABB are equipped with DC current measurement by
AC current transformer. If such drives are connected to and used at
weak networks and if the current controller is tuned for fast time re-
sponse it may happen, that an interaction can be recognized bet-
ween the networks and the drive. The most critical configuration is
the 12-pulse parallel one in the range of 900A –5150A
(C3 and C4).
Sometimes it will appear as a current instability or increase of
bridge change over time and due to an remaining magnetizing in
the current transformer.

2.6 Control, Trip, Emergency operation
Drive logic DCS 600 The basic switch on/off logic (control structure, see Figure 2/14) is
based on DCS 600 six – pulse converter logic. However for
DCS 600 in 12 – pulse / sequential operation an additional function
is available:
The drive can be commissioned without APC /AC80 control soft-
ware and switched on only by DriveWindow. Moreover the 12 –
pulse configuration can be controlled only by fieldbusadapter mod-
ules (FCI…).
Note: The features for single 6 – pulse operation remain
unchanged.

This new function is performed by the Parameter COMMAND SEL
(15.22). The slave must be set to 12 – pulse link (new value).
With this configuration the APC/AC80/FCI or DriveWindow controls
the complete 12 – pulse configuration.
The signals ON/OFF, START/STOP, REFERENCE and RESET are
sent only to the master.
Parameters (controller gain, motor ratings, operation mode…..)
must be sent directly to the slave converter via CH0 or CH3 (similar
DCS 600 six – pulse).
The controlword MCW
(7.01) of the slave is not valid in 12-pulse
configuration, because the slave receives the command bits by 12–
pulse link (V260).
DriveWindow uploads and displays the slave Status via CH3 auto-
matically. In case of remote operation the overriding control must
upload the slave status via Ch0.
An emergency operation can be used in case of a break down of a
converter. The parameters for 6-pulse single operation mode
(emergency operation) can be sent by DriveWindow (CH3) or over-
riding control (CH0) to the master or slave converter.
