SATA2.5-inchhot-swapharddiskdrivesandsolid-statedrives,anditsupportsJBODconﬁgurationsand

RAID0,1,5,6,10,50,and60.SomeRAIDconﬁgurationsrequireaFeaturesonDemandkey,anoptional

Drivedrawer

Thedrivedrawerinthestorageexpansionnodecontains12hot-swapdrivebays.

Thedraweraccommodatesupto12hot-swapSASorSATA2.5-inchharddiskdrivesorsolid-statedrives.

Thedrivedraweralsohasabracketfortheﬂashpowermodulethatisusedwithanoptionalﬂash/RAID

•Flashing:Oneormoredrivesarebeingidentiﬁed.

•Flashingandthenlit:Oneormoredrivesareinafaultstateandarebeingidentiﬁed.TheLEDﬂashes

untilidentiﬁcationiscomplete,andthentheLEDremainslituntilallfaultstateshavebeenresolved.

Drawer-openLED

Ifthestorageexpansionnodeisoperatedfortoolongwiththedraweropen,thechassiscoolingfans

mightincreaseinspeed,andthestorageexpansionnodemightpoweroff.Ifthedrawerisopen,the

drawer-openLEDﬂashesandanaudiblebeepsoundstogivethefollowingindications:

•Every15seconds:Thedrawerisnotfullyclosed.Closethedrawerwhenyouhaveﬁnishedinstalling

orremovingdrives.

•Every5seconds:Thedrawerhasbeenopentoolong.Closethedrawerimmediately.

•Every0.25second:Thestorageexpansionnodehasreacheditsthermalthreshold.Closethe

drawerimmediatelytoavoiddamagetothedrives.

computenodeontheshelf,installanoptionalﬂash/RAIDadapterandﬂashpowermodule,andinstallthe

storageexpansionnodeassemblyinanFlexSystemEnterpriseChassis.

Attention:Beforeyouconnectacomputenodetothestorageexpansionnode,youmustmakesurethat

Installationguidelines

Usetheseguidelinesbeforeyouinstallthestorageexpansionnodeoroptionaldevices.

•Beforeyoubegin,read“Safety”onpageiiiand“Handlingstatic-sensitivedevices”onpage8.This

informationwillhelpyouworksafely.

•Beforeyouinstallyournewstorageexpansionnode,taketheopportunitytodownloadandapplythe

mostrecentﬁrmwareupdatestotheassociatedcomputenode.Thisstepwillhelptoensurethatany

knownissuesareaddressedandthatyoursystemisreadytofunctionatmaximumlevelsofperformance.

•Observegoodhousekeepingintheareawhereyouareworking.Placeremovedcoversandotherparts

inasafeplace.

•Backupallimportantdatabeforeyoumakechangestodiskdrives.

•BeforeyouremoveacomputenodefromtheFlexSystemEnterpriseChassis,youmustshutdownthe

operatingsystemandturnoffthecomputenode.Youdonothavetoshutdownthechassisitself.

•Blueonacomponentindicatestouchpoints,whereyoucangripthecomponenttoremoveitfromor

installitinthecomputenode,openorclosealatch,andsoon.

•Orangeonacomponentoranorangelabelonornearacomponentindicatesthatthecomponentcan

behot-swapped,whichmeansthatifthecomputenodeandoperatingsystemsupporthot-swap

capability,youcanremoveorinstallthecomponentwhilethecomputenodeisrunning.(Orangecan

alsoindicatetouchpointsonhot-swapcomponents.)Seetheinstructionsforremovingorinstallinga

speciﬁchot-swapcomponentforanyadditionalproceduresthatyoumighthavetoperformbefore

youremoveorinstallthecomponent.

Usetheseguidelinestoensurethatthestorageexpansionnodemeetsthecoolingandsystemreliability

requirements.

•Toensurepropercooling,donotoperatetheFlexSystemEnterpriseChassiswithoutadeviceorﬁller

installedineachbay.SeethedocumentationforyourFlexSystemEnterpriseChassisforadditional

information.

•Makesurethattheventilationholesonthestorageexpansionnodearenotblocked.

•Thecomputenodebatterymustbeoperational.Ifthebatterybecomesdefective,replaceitimmediately.

Handlingstatic-sensitivedevices

Toreducethepossibilityofdamagefromelectrostaticdischarge,observetheseprecautions.

Attention:Staticelectricitycandamagethestorageexpansionnodeandotherelectronicdevices.Toavoid

connectoronthefrontorbackoftherack).

•Limityourmovement.Movementcancausestaticelectricitytobuilduparoundyou.

•Handlethedevicecarefully,holdingitbyitsedgesoritsframe.

•Donottouchsolderjoints,pins,orexposedcircuitry.

•Donotleavethedevicewhereotherscanhandleanddamageit.

•Whilethedeviceisstillinitsstatic-protectivepackage,touchittoanunpaintedmetalpartoftheFlex

SystemEnterpriseChassisoranyunpaintedmetalsurfaceonanyothergroundedrackcomponentinthe

rackinwhichyouareinstallingthedeviceforatleast2seconds.Thisdrainsstaticelectricityfromthe

packageandfromyourbody.

•Removethedevicefromitspackageandinstallitdirectlyintothecomputenodewithoutsettingdownthe

device.Ifitisnecessarytosetdownthedevice,putitbackintoitsstatic-protectivepackage.Donot

placethedeviceonthecomputenodecoveroronametalsurface.

•Takeadditionalcarewhenyouhandledevicesduringcoldweather.Heatingreducesindoorhumidity

andincreasesstaticelectricity.

Removingthecoverfromthestorageexpansionnode

Usetheseinstructionstoremovethecoverfromthestorageexpansionnode.

Pressonthecoverreleaseandslidethecovertowardtherearofthestorageexpansionnode;then,liftthe

coverawayfromthestorageexpansionnode,asshowninthefollowingillustration.

Installingthecomputenode

Thestorageexpansionnodecomesattachedtotheexpansionshelf.Youmustattachacomputenodetothe

expansionshelfandconnecttheinterposercabletothecomputenode.

Attention:Beforeyouconnectacomputenodetothestorageexpansionnode,youmustmakesurethat

theintegratedmanagementmoduleII(IMM2)primaryandbackupﬁrmwareinthecomputenodeisat

levelibm_fw_imm2_1aoo34x-1.xx_anyos_noarchorlater.IftheIMM2ﬁrmwareinthecomputenodeisat

anearlierlevelwhenyouconnectthecomputenodetothestorageexpansionnode,theﬁrmwareinthe

storageexpansionnodewillbecomecorruptedandunrecoverable,andyouwillhavetoreplacethestorage

expansionnode.Forinformationaboutupdatingtheﬁrmwareinthecomputenode,seethecomputenode

InstallationandServiceGuide.

Beforeyouattachacomputenodetotheexpansionshelf,completethefollowingsteps:

1.Read“Safety”onpageiiiand“Installationguidelines”onpage7.

2.Ifthecomputenodeisinstalledandoperating,completethefollowingsteps:

a.Shutdowntheoperatingsystem,andpressthepowerbuttontoturnoffthecomputenode(seethe

computenodeInstallationandServiceGuideforinstructions).

b.RemovethecomputenodefromtheFlexSystemEnterpriseChassis(seethecomputenode

InstallationandServiceGuideforinstructions).

3.Makesurethatthecomputenodehastwomicroprocessors,ifthatconﬁgurationisrequiredforthe

computenodetoworkwiththestorageexpansionnode.Todeterminewhetherasupportedcompute

noderequirestwomicroprocessors,see“Supportedcomputenodes”onpage2.

4.MakesurethattheintegratedmanagementmoduleII(IMM2)primaryandbackupﬁrmwareisatlevel

ibm_fw_imm2_1aoo34x-1.xx_anyos_noarchorlater.

Attention:IftheIMM2ﬁrmwareinthecomputenodeisatanearlierlevelwhenyouconnectthe

computenodetothestorageexpansionnode,theﬁrmwareinthestorageexpansionnodewillbecome

corruptedandunrecoverable,andyouwillhavetoreplacethestorageexpansionnode.

Toattachacomputenodetotheexpansionshelf,completethefollowingsteps.

Step1.Placethestorageexpansionnodeassemblyonaﬂat,static-protectivesurfacewiththestorage

expansionnodebezelfacingyou.

Step2.Removethecomputenodecover(seethecomputenodeInstallationandServiceGuidefor

instructions).

Attention:Bendtheinterposercableupandoverthestorageexpansionnodetoensurethatthe

cableandconnectorareclearoftheareawherethecomputenodewillbeattached.

Step3.Withtherightedgeofthecomputenodealignedwiththecomputenodealignmentmarkonthe

expansionshelf,orienttheslotsonthebottomofthecomputenodewiththepostsontheleft

sideoftheexpansionshelf.Then,slidethecomputenodetowardthecenteroftheshelfuntil

theretentionlatchclicksintoplace.

Step4.IfanyI/Oexpansionadaptersinthecomputenodeareblockingaccesstotheinterposerconnector,

removethem(seethecomputenodeInstallationandServiceGuideforinstructions).

Step5.Connecttheinterposercabletotheinterposerconnectoronthecomputenodesystemboard,as

showninthefollowingillustration.

Step6.IfyouremovedanyI/Oexpansionadaptersfromthecomputenode,installthem(seethecompute

nodeInstallationandServiceGuideforinstructions).

Step7.Installthecomputenodecover(seethecomputenodeInstallationandServiceGuidefor

instructions).

Step5.Ontheundersideoftheexpansionshelf,lifttheraisededgeoftheretaininglatchthatsecuresthe

computenodetotheshelfwhileyouslidethecomputenodeawayfromthecenteroftheshelf,as

showninthefollowingillustration.

Step6.Installthecomputenodecover(seethecomputenodeInstallationandServiceGuidefor

instructions).

Installingaﬂash/RAIDadapterandﬂashpowermodule

SomeRAIDconﬁgurationsrequireanoptional512MBor1GBﬂash/RAIDadapter.Theadaptercomes

withaﬂashpowermodule,whichyoumustinstallwiththeadapter.

5.Openthedrivedrawerapproximately30cm(12in.).

6.Seetheillustrationin“Systemboard”onpage3forthelocationoftheﬂash/RAIDadapterconnector.

Toinstallaﬂash/RAIDadapterandﬂashpowermodule,completethefollowingsteps.

Step1.Touchthestatic-protectivepackagethatcontainstheadaptertoanyunpaintedmetalsurfaceon

theFlexSystemEnterpriseChassisoranyunpaintedmetalsurfaceonanyothergroundedrack

component;then,removetheadapterfromthepackage.

Step2.Orienttheadapterwiththeconnectoronthesystemboard;then,ﬁrmlypressontheindicated

locationontheadapteruntilthebluelatchsnapsupandovertheedgeoftheadapter.

Step3.Connectthecabletotheadapter.Theconnectorsarekeyedtopreventincorrectinsertion.

Step4.Makesurethatthecableissecuredinthecableclipontheinsidewallofthestorageexpansion

node.

Step5.Pressdownslightlyonthereleaseontheouteredgeoftheblueﬂashpowermodulebracketand

inserttheﬂashpowermoduleintothebracket,withthecableorientedtowardtheoutsideofthe

drivedrawer,asshowninthefollowingillustration.
