Every15seconds:Thedrawerisnotfullyclosed.Closethedrawerwhenyouhavefinishedinstalling

Every5seconds:Thedrawerhasbeenopentoolong.Closethedrawerimmediately.
Every0.25second:Thestorageexpansionnodehasreacheditsthermalthreshold.Closethe
drawerimmediatelytoavoiddamagetothedrives.

Beforeyouinstallyournewstorageexpansionnode,taketheopportunitytodownloadandapplythe
mostrecentfirmwareupdatestotheassociatedcomputenode.Thisstepwillhelptoensurethatany
knownissuesareaddressedandthatyoursystemisreadytofunctionatmaximumlevelsofperformance.

BeforeyouremoveacomputenodefromtheFlexSystemEnterpriseChassis,youmustshutdownthe
operatingsystemandturnoffthecomputenode.Youdonothavetoshutdownthechassisitself.
Blueonacomponentindicatestouchpoints,whereyoucangripthecomponenttoremoveitfromor
installitinthecomputenode,openorclosealatch,andsoon.
Orangeonacomponentoranorangelabelonornearacomponentindicatesthatthecomponentcan
behot-swapped,whichmeansthatifthecomputenodeandoperatingsystemsupporthot-swap
capability,youcanremoveorinstallthecomponentwhilethecomputenodeisrunning.(Orangecan
alsoindicatetouchpointsonhot-swapcomponents.)Seetheinstructionsforremovingorinstallinga

Toensurepropercooling,donotoperatetheFlexSystemEnterpriseChassiswithoutadeviceorfiller
installedineachbay.SeethedocumentationforyourFlexSystemEnterpriseChassisforadditional
information.
Makesurethattheventilationholesonthestorageexpansionnodearenotblocked.
Thecomputenodebatterymustbeoperational.Ifthebatterybecomesdefective,replaceitimmediately.
Forinstructions,seethecomputenodeInstallationandServiceGuide.
Handlingstatic-sensitivedevices
Toreducethepossibilityofdamagefromelectrostaticdischarge,observetheseprecautions.
Attention:Staticelectricitycandamagethestorageexpansionnodeandotherelectronicdevices.Toavoid
damage,keepstatic-sensitivedevicesintheirstatic-protectivepackagesuntilyouarereadytoinstallthem.
Whenyouworkonarackthathasanelectrostaticdischarge(ESD)connector,useawriststrap,especially
whenyouhandlemodules,optionaldevices,orcomputenodes.Toworkcorrectly,thewriststrapmust
haveagoodcontactatbothends(touchingyourskinatoneendandfirmlyconnectedtotheESD
connectoronthefrontorbackoftherack).

SystemEnterpriseChassisoranyunpaintedmetalsurfaceonanyothergroundedrackcomponentinthe
rackinwhichyouareinstallingthedeviceforatleast2seconds.Thisdrainsstaticelectricityfromthe
packageandfromyourbody.
Removethedevicefromitspackageandinstallitdirectlyintothecomputenodewithoutsettingdownthe
device.Ifitisnecessarytosetdownthedevice,putitbackintoitsstatic-protectivepackage.Donot
placethedeviceonthecomputenodecoveroronametalsurface.
Takeadditionalcarewhenyouhandledevicesduringcoldweather.Heatingreducesindoorhumidity
andincreasesstaticelectricity.
Removingthecoverfromthestorageexpansionnode
Usetheseinstructionstoremovethecoverfromthestorageexpansionnode.
Beforeyoubegin

Pressonthecoverreleaseandslidethecovertowardtherearofthestorageexpansionnode;then,liftthe
coverawayfromthestorageexpansionnode,asshowninthefollowingillustration.

Installingthecomputenode
Thestorageexpansionnodecomesattachedtotheexpansionshelf.Youmustattachacomputenodetothe
expansionshelfandconnecttheinterposercabletothecomputenode.
Attention:Beforeyouconnectacomputenodetothestorageexpansionnode,youmustmakesurethat
theintegratedmanagementmoduleII(IMM2)primaryandbackupfirmwareinthecomputenodeisat
levelibm_fw_imm2_1aoo34x-1.xx_anyos_noarchorlater.IftheIMM2firmwareinthecomputenodeisat
anearlierlevelwhenyouconnectthecomputenodetothestorageexpansionnode,thefirmwareinthe
storageexpansionnodewillbecomecorruptedandunrecoverable,andyouwillhavetoreplacethestorage
expansionnode.Forinformationaboutupdatingthefirmwareinthecomputenode,seethecomputenode
InstallationandServiceGuide.
Beforeyouattachacomputenodetotheexpansionshelf,completethefollowingsteps:
1.Read“Safety”onpageiiiand“Installationguidelines”onpage7.
2.Ifthecomputenodeisinstalledandoperating,completethefollowingsteps:
a.Shutdowntheoperatingsystem,andpressthepowerbuttontoturnoffthecomputenode(seethe
computenodeInstallationandServiceGuideforinstructions).
b.RemovethecomputenodefromtheFlexSystemEnterpriseChassis(seethecomputenode
InstallationandServiceGuideforinstructions).
3.Makesurethatthecomputenodehastwomicroprocessors,ifthatconfigurationisrequiredforthe
computenodetoworkwiththestorageexpansionnode.Todeterminewhetherasupportedcompute
noderequirestwomicroprocessors,see“Supportedcomputenodes”onpage2.
4.MakesurethattheintegratedmanagementmoduleII(IMM2)primaryandbackupfirmwareisatlevel
ibm_fw_imm2_1aoo34x-1.xx_anyos_noarchorlater.
Attention:IftheIMM2firmwareinthecomputenodeisatanearlierlevelwhenyouconnectthe
computenodetothestorageexpansionnode,thefirmwareinthestorageexpansionnodewillbecome
corruptedandunrecoverable,andyouwillhavetoreplacethestorageexpansionnode.
Toattachacomputenodetotheexpansionshelf,completethefollowingsteps.

Step1.Placethestorageexpansionnodeassemblyonaflat,static-protectivesurfacewiththestorage
expansionnodebezelfacingyou.
Step2.Removethecomputenodecover(seethecomputenodeInstallationandServiceGuidefor
instructions).
Attention:Bendtheinterposercableupandoverthestorageexpansionnodetoensurethatthe
cableandconnectorareclearoftheareawherethecomputenodewillbeattached.
Step3.Withtherightedgeofthecomputenodealignedwiththecomputenodealignmentmarkonthe
expansionshelf,orienttheslotsonthebottomofthecomputenodewiththepostsontheleft
sideoftheexpansionshelf.Then,slidethecomputenodetowardthecenteroftheshelfuntil
theretentionlatchclicksintoplace.
Step4.IfanyI/Oexpansionadaptersinthecomputenodeareblockingaccesstotheinterposerconnector,
removethem(seethecomputenodeInstallationandServiceGuideforinstructions).
Step5.Connecttheinterposercabletotheinterposerconnectoronthecomputenodesystemboard,as
showninthefollowingillustration.
Step6.IfyouremovedanyI/Oexpansionadaptersfromthecomputenode,installthem(seethecompute
nodeInstallationandServiceGuideforinstructions).
Step7.Installthecomputenodecover(seethecomputenodeInstallationandServiceGuidefor
instructions).

Step5.Ontheundersideoftheexpansionshelf,lifttheraisededgeoftheretaininglatchthatsecuresthe
computenodetotheshelfwhileyouslidethecomputenodeawayfromthecenteroftheshelf,as
showninthefollowingillustration.
Step6.Installthecomputenodecover(seethecomputenodeInstallationandServiceGuidefor
instructions).
Installingaflash/RAIDadapterandflashpowermodule
SomeRAIDconfigurationsrequireanoptional512MBor1GBflash/RAIDadapter.Theadaptercomes
withaflashpowermodule,whichyoumustinstallwiththeadapter.

5.Openthedrivedrawerapproximately30cm(12in.).
6.Seetheillustrationin“Systemboard”onpage3forthelocationoftheflash/RAIDadapterconnector.
Toinstallaflash/RAIDadapterandflashpowermodule,completethefollowingsteps.
Step1.Touchthestatic-protectivepackagethatcontainstheadaptertoanyunpaintedmetalsurfaceon
theFlexSystemEnterpriseChassisoranyunpaintedmetalsurfaceonanyothergroundedrack
component;then,removetheadapterfromthepackage.
Step2.Orienttheadapterwiththeconnectoronthesystemboard;then,firmlypressontheindicated
locationontheadapteruntilthebluelatchsnapsupandovertheedgeoftheadapter.
Step3.Connectthecabletotheadapter.Theconnectorsarekeyedtopreventincorrectinsertion.
Step4.Makesurethatthecableissecuredinthecableclipontheinsidewallofthestorageexpansion
node.
Step5.Pressdownslightlyonthereleaseontheouteredgeoftheblueflashpowermodulebracketand
inserttheflashpowermoduleintothebracket,withthecableorientedtowardtheoutsideofthe
drivedrawer,asshowninthefollowingillustration.
