Focal Point Products
Focal Point Products’ polyurethane mouldings are the same density as white pine mouldings, and can be installed
using the same tools one uses to install wood mouldings…including a nail gun set at the proper PSI. However, the
installation methods for polyurethane and wood differ slightly.
With polyurethane mouldings:
DO NOT SCARF CUT JOINTS. INSTEAD, BUTT JOINTS TOGETHER USING A POLYURETHANE-BASED CONSTRUCTION
ADHESIVE.
DO NOT COPE CORNERS. INSTEAD MITER THE CORNERS AND SECURE WITH A POLYURETHANE-BASED
CONSTRUCTION ADHESIVE.
USE ONLY A POLYURETHANE-BASED CONSTRUCTION ADHESIVE. Other adhesives might damage the polyurethane
foam, and will not prevent joint separation. The proper adhesive’s label will clearly state “Polyurethane
Construction Adhesive,” and these adhesives are readily available at most home improvement retail outlets.
GENERAL INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR CROWNS AND COVES
MEASURE
Measure the room’s perimeter and add 2’ of moulding for each corner. For example: A 12’ x 16’ room with 4 inside
corners will require 64 linear feet of crown or cove moulding. (2 x 12’ = 24’) + (2 x 16’ = 32’) + (4 x 2’ = 8’).
PREPARATION
Acclimatize the moulding to the temperature and humidity of the room for at least 24 hours prior to installation.
CUTTING
A compound miter saw is recommended, but you may use a fine-tooth hand saw and a miter box if necessary. Cut
pieces that will be joined together approximately ¼” longer than the exact measurement. This will allow you to
spring the pieces together for the tightest fit. Cut 90-degree butt joints where 2 pieces of moulding will connect
along the wall. Cut 45 degree miters for inside and outside corners.
INSTALLATION
A power nail gun with finish nails will make the installation quicker, but you may also use a hammer with finish
nails if necessary. Nail the moulding every 16” to secure to the wall studs. Join the butt cuts and the miter cuts by
applying a bead of polyurethane construction adhesive to both pieces and then springing the two pieces together.
OPTIONAL: Apply a small bead of polyurethane construction adhesive along the bedding edges of the
moulding (where it meets the wall and the ceiling) before nailing. This will provide the best possible
adhesion, and will eliminate joint separation that is inherent in all crown moulding installations regardless
of the substrate used.
FINISHING
Focal Point mouldings may be painted, stained or faux finished. If painting, use only latex or oil-based paint. DO
NOT USE LACQUER -BASED PAINT. Patch nail holes and fill seams with a good quality spackle or caulk. Once the
filler is dry, lightly sand each hole or seam until it’s smooth and touch up the paint.
