FOREWORD
Dear customer,
Welcome to the team of BEHRINGER users, and thank you very much
for expressing your confidence in us by purchasing this UCG102.
Writing this foreword for you gives me great pleasure, because it represents
the culmination of many months of hard work delivered by our
engineering team to achieve a very ambitious goal: to design a USB
interface that allows a guitar to be connected directly to the computer,
convinces through its excellent sound and offers a maximum of flexibility
and performance. The task of designing our new UCG102 certainly
meant a great deal of responsibility, which we assumed by focusing on
you, the discerning user and musician. Meeting your expectations also
meant a lot of work and night shifts. But it was fun, too. Developing a
product usually brings a lot of people together, and what a great feeling
it is when all who participated in such a project can be proud of what
they’ve achieved.
It is our philosophy to share our enjoyment with you, because you are
the most important member of the BEHRINGER team. With your highly competent suggestions for
new products you’ve made a significant contribution to shaping our company and making it successful.
In return, we guarantee you uncompromising quality as well as excellent technical and audio properties
at an extremely reasonable price. All of this will enable you to give free rein to your creativity without
being hampered by budget constraints.

GUITAR LINK UCG102
We are often asked how we manage to produce such high-quality devices at such unbelievably low
prices. The answer is quite simple: it’s you, our customers! Many satisfied customers mean large sales
volumes enabling us to get better purchasing terms for components, etc. Isn’t it only fair to pass this
benefit on to you? Because we know that your success is our success too!
I would like to thank everyone that made the UCG102 possible in the first place. You have all made
your own personal contributions, from the developers to the many other employees at this company,
and to you, the BEHRINGER user.
My friends, it’s been worth the effort!
Thank you very much,
Uli Behringer

2 CONTROLS AND CONNECTIONS
You can connect the UCG102 directly to an amp by means of the jack connector and to your PC or Mac
computer by using the USB connector. The USB connection supplies the power for the UCG102.
Fig. 2.1: Control elements and connections
11

You can connect the guitar to your
computer via USB connection. The blue
control LED ( ) indicates that a
connection to the computer has been
established.
The VOLUME control adjusts the volume
level of the headphones output. Turn the
control fully to the left before you connect
the headphones. This helps you avoid the
damage that is caused by high volume
settings.
You can use a commercially available ¼"
jack for the -connection.
We would like to draw your attention to
the fact that extremely loud sound levels
may damage your hearing as well as your
headphones/loudspeakers. Turn the
VOLUME control fully clockwise before
you switch on the unit. Be careful to se-
lect a suitable volume at all times.
You can connect the UCG102 to your guitar
via the guitar input (¼" jack). Use a
commercial ¼" mono jack cable.
You can modify the guitar signal with the
LEVEL switch. At high signal levels, the
CLIP LED (above the BEHRINGER LOGO)
will light up red in which case you should
set the LEVEL switch to LOW.
The blue LED indicates the status of the
USB connection.

The Full Spectrum
The GUITAR COMBO I (AC Box Combo) is the
popular role model that revolutionized British

has a uniquely inspiring sonic character. The
GUITAR COMBO II (Twang Combo) is the

Over the course of several decades this warm and

distinctive and individual tone can be as warm as
it can be hard.

3.2 System requirements
To connect the GUITAR LINK UCG102 to a
computer, you need a free USB slot.
The UCG102 is compatible with both PCs
and Mac computers. Therefore, no
installation procedure or drivers are
required for the correct functioning of the
UCG102. As soon as you connect the
UCG102 to a free USB slot, it will be
recognized as generic USB audio device.
If you want to make use of the included
drivers and applications, please observe
the system requirements of the
respective manufacturers.
If you want to use the guitar for real-time
applications on the PC, for example, to record or
to use with the provided “Guitar Combos” from
Native Instruments, we strongly recommend the
installation of the included USB audio driver to
ensure a low latency (see Chapter 3.3).
To work with the software that comes with the guitar, your computer must meet the following minimum
requirements:
PC MAC
Operating system Windows XP Mac OS X v10.3.x
Processor
Pentium 700 MHz
Athlon XP 1.33 GHz
G4 733 MHz
RAM 256 MB 512 MB
3 SOFTWARE
16
GUITAR LINK UCG102
3.3 Device drivers and latency
A device driver is an interface that ensures
communication between the software (audio
application) and the hardware (your UCG102). In
recent years, the PC platform has witnessed the
establishment of several different driver models
for sound cards. Some of these drivers cannot be
used for simultaneous recording and playback or
for working with software plug-ins, since they do
not support the full performance provided by
professional sound cards and cause a long time
delay (this is called “latency”).
With standard Windows applications, you don’t
need to worry about which driver is currently being
used by the operating system. You only need to
select the correct playback device via the Windows
operating system’s “Control Panel”.
However, as soon as you start to produce or record
computer-based music and work with special
audio software such as Cubase, Live, Logic,
Tracktion, or others, you should make sure that
you selected an ASIO driver. This driver model
supports the full range of functions offered by
your hardware and gives you the best
performance.
With the USB Audio Driver, we have already
included one of the fastest ASIO drivers currently
available.
You will normally find the selection of a driver
model for computer hardware in the standard
default settings of the software you are using. If
necessary, check the documentation for your
software. Use the control panel to set up a lower
latency. The smaller the value, the better. If audio
dropouts occur, try increasing the latency in stages.
With the OS X operating system, there is only
one driver model, the CoreAudio driver. Thus,
there’s no need to worry about selecting a driver.
