ThePharoscontrolsolutionhastwocomplementaryparts:theinstalledControllersandRemote
Devices,andtheDesignersoftwarewhichrunsonanypersonalcomputerandisonlyrequired
whencreatingormodifyingthepresentation.
ThisguideisprimarilyintendedasareferenceforthePharoshardwareinstallation.ForDesigner
softwarehelppleaserefertotheon-linedocumentation(onceinstalled,seebelow).

LPCINSTALLATION
TheLightingPlaybackController(LPC)is100%solidstateandhavebeenqualifiedtooperateina
dryenvironmentwithinatemperaturerangeof0°Cto50°C(32°Fto122°F).SealedIP65rated
consumerunitsareavailableforoutdooruse,pleaseconsultyourPharosdistributoror
representative.
Sincetheunitsrequirenouserinterventiononceinstalledtheyaresuitableforremoteinstallation
withallconfigurationandmanagementtakingplaceoveranEthernetnetwork.Howeveritis
recommendedthataccesscanbegainedintheunlikelyeventofahardwarefailure.
LPCLAYOUT
ThefollowingdrawingillustratesthelayoutoftheLPC,refertothefollowingsectionsfordetails:
LPCVERSIONS
TherearethreeversionsoftheLPCavailable:LPC1,LPC2andLPC4.TheLPC1supports512
DMXchannels,theLPC2supports1024channelsandtheLPC4supports2048channels(ofwhich
1024channelsareeDMXonly).Allcanbeusedasastand-alonecontrollerorco-operatively,via
anEthernetnetwork,toformascalablesystem.
POWERSUPPLY
TheLPCcanbepoweredintwodifferentways:
l DCpower(9to48V)
AlimitedpowersourceapprovedtoUL60950-12ndEdition,CAN/CSAC22.2

SuchapowersupplycanbeconnecteddirectlytotheLPCusingtheDCInput
connector.Thepinsonthisconnectoraremarked:

ThepowersupplyshouldbeconnectedtothePositiveandSignalgroundinputs,
ensuringthepolarityiscorrect.Wherepossible,usea12V(minimum)supplyin

TheLPCwilltypicallyconsume4W.
l Power-over-Ethernet(PoE)
Astandard(802.3af)Power-over-Ethernetswitchmaybeusedtoprovideboth
powerandanetworkconnectiontotheLPCusingasinglecable.
TheLPCoperatesasaPoEClass2device(3.84>6.49W)andwilltypically
consume4W.
NOTE:Powershouldonlybeappliedusingoneoftheabovemethods.Redundantoperationusing
bothsourcesisnotsupported.
NOTE:Powermustnotbedisconnectedwhenuploadingprojectdatanorduring
bootloader/firmwareupdatestotheLPCascorruptionofthedataorsoftwaremayoccur,
perhapsevenrenderingtheunitinoperable.
GROUNDING
TheLPCisdesignedtobemountedonagrounded(earthed)DIN-railandadedicatedChassis
ground(earth)terminalisalsoprovidedwhichshouldbeconnectedtoasuitableearth.
Additionally,theSignalgroundcanbetiedtoChassisgroundtoprovideasuitablereferencebut
thisisnotgenerallyrecommended.
Ifinanydoubtatall,orifyouhaveunusualpowersupplyorgrounding/earthingrequirements,then
pleaseconsultPharosSupport.
REALTIMECLOCKBATTERY
TheLPC’sinternalrealtimeclockisbattery-backedtoensureoperationwhentheunitisnot
powered.Thebatteryshouldlastforatleast10yearsandiseasilyreplacedwhennecessary,
replacementbattery:RenataCR2032LithiumButtonCell.
CAUTION:Riskofexplosionifbatteryreplacedbyincorrecttype.Disposeofusedbatteries
accordingtothemanufacturer’sinstructions.

MEMORYCARD
TheLPCisshippedwitha2GBSDMemoryCardwhichshouldbesufficientformostprojects
sincetheLPC’sdatastorageisextremelyefficient,evenwithamultitudeofimportedmediafiles.
However,alargercapacitycardcouldofcoursebefittedifrequired.
Asonlytheproject’sprogrammingdataresidesonthecard,thecardisalsoaconvenientwayto
backupdataforarchiving;theDesignerprojectfileforexample.
Furthermore,intheeventofLPChardwarefailure,simplymovingthecardintoareplacementunit
withidenticalormorerecentfirmwareissufficienttogettheprojectupandrunningagain.
STATUSLEDS
ThePharoslogowillilluminatewhenpowerisappliedtotheLPC.TheredLEDsonthefrontofthe
LPCindicatetheunit’scurrentstatus.
TheActiveLEDilluminatesoncethebootupprocedurehascompletedandisindicativeofafully
functionalunit.
TheEthernetLEDindicatesPharos-relatednetworkactivity(notnetworklink,seeEthernetport
later)whiletheremainingLEDsindicatecommunicationonthevariousportsoftheLPC.
TheOutputLEDindicatesthatavalidprojectfilehasbeenloadedfromthememorycardandthat
playback&dataoutputhasstarted.
TheDMXLEDindicatesthatvalidDMX512dataisbeingoutputfromtheDMXports.
ERRORCODES
AdditionallytheredstatusLEDsareusedtoindicateanybootfailuresoftheLPCthatpreventthe
unitfromgoingactive.ThesecodesareoutlinedbelowandinallcasestheActiveLEDwillbeoff.
l Ethernet&USBdoubleflashing-failedtobootfirmware(followtheLPCrecoverypro-
ceduredetailedinDesignerHelp)
l Ethernet,MIDI&USBtripleflashing-memorycardmissing(insertorreplacecard)
RESETSWITCH
TheLPCmayberesetbyinsertingasmallbluntobjectintotheresetholeonthefrontoftheLPC
todepresstheresetswitch.Theswitchshouldbeheldforatleastonesecond.
NOTE:Theresetmustnotbeoperatedwhenuploadingprojectdatanorduring
bootloader/firmwareupdatestotheLPCascorruptionofthedataorsoftwaremayoccur,
perhapsevenrenderingtheunitinoperable.
WATCHDOG
TheinternalwatchdogisenabledbydefaulttoresetautomaticallytheLPCincaseofa
softwarecrashasaresultofeitheracodingerror(bug)orarandomelectromagneticevent

TheMIDIinputandoutputconnectorsarestandard5pinDINconnections.
TheymaybeconnecteddirectlytoanystandardMIDIdevice.
l DMXOutputs
TwoDMXoutputsareprovided.AnLPC1willoutputonboththesameDMX
universedata,anLPC2willoutputaseparateuniverseoneach.Thepinson

TheDMXportsarebydefaultnotisolatedfromtheLPC’sgroundconnection
whichistherecommendedconfigurationfordrivingisolatedinputs-the
majorityofDMXreceivers.
IfrequiredthismaybechangedbyremovingthetopcoveroftheLPCand
removingthejumpermarked‘JP1’,locatedtotherightoftheDMXports.The
twoDMXportswillthenbeopticallyisolatedfromtheLPC’sinternalcircuitry
althoughnotfromeachother.
l Digital/AnalogInputs
TheLPCfeatures8digital/analoginputsonone16wayconnector.Toconnect
aninputsignaltotheLPConeconnectionshouldbemadetothedesiredinput
pin,marked'1'to'8',andtheothershouldbemadetotheadjacentsignal
groundpin.
TheinputscanbeindividuallyconfiguredviaDesignertooperateinoneof
threemodes:
Contactclosure:Anexternalvolt-freeswitchmaybeconnectedbetweenthe
inputpinandthesignalgroundpin.
Inthismode,theinputpinisinternallypulled-upto5Vviaa2.2Kohmresistor,so
theswitchonlyneedstoberatedat5V,2.5mAorgreater.
Digitalinput:Anexternalvoltagesource(suchasa12VDCtriggeroutput)
maybeconnectedbetweentheinputpinandthesignalgroundpin.
Inthismode,theinputpinisinternallypulleddownto0Vviaa202.1Kohm
resistorandthemaximuminputvoltagesupportedis24VDC.
TheLPCmaybeconfiguredtospecifywhatthe'high'and'low'threshold
voltagesare.Thisfacilitycanbeusedtoprovide'Schmitttrigger'action.
Analoginput:Anexternalvoltagesource(suchasa0-10Vanalogsignal)maybe
connectedbetweentheinputpinandthesignalgroundpin.
Inthismode,theinputpinisinternallypulleddownto0Vviaa202.1Kohm
resistorandthemaximuminputvoltagesupportedis24VDC.
TheLPCmaybeconfiguredtospecifywhattheinputvoltagerangeis.
Voltagesinsidethisrangearereportedas0%to100%.

Inallmodes,themaximumratedinputvoltageis24VDC.Theinputsshould
neverbedrivenwithahighervoltagenornegativevoltageordamagemay
occur.
Inallmodes,allsignalgroundpinsareconnectedtogetherinternally.The
digital/analoginputsarenotisolatedfromeachothernortheLPC’spower
supply.Ifisolationisrequired,itmusteitherbeprovidedbytheconnected
deviceoraseparateisolatorshouldbeused.
l Ethernet
Astandard10/100TXEthernetconnectionmaybemadetotheLPC.Asthe
LPCsupportsPower-over-Ethernet(PoE),aPoEswitchormidspaninjector
canbeused.TheLEDsontheRJ45jackitselfareusefulfordebuggingthe
Ethernetinstallation:
TheLnkLEDwillilluminatewhenanEthernetlinkhasbeenestablished.
TheDatLEDwillilluminatetoindicateEthernettraffic(notjustPharos-
relevant).
l USB
TheUSBportmaybeusedtoconnecttheLPCtoaPCtouploadprojectdata
andupdatetheLPC’sinternaloperatingsoftware.
NOTE:Portsandthirdpartyequipmentcanbedamagedwhenpluggingorunplugginganenergised
system(hot-plugging).Itisthereforeadvisabletoremovepowerbeforemakingorbreakingport
connections.

TheunitsaredesignedtobepermanentlyinstalledintoUKdouble-gangorcustombackboxes

TheTemperatureSensorcanbeusedtomeasuretheambienttemperaturearoundtheTPC.
NOTE:TheTemperatureSensorcutoutisnotareleasecatchandattemptingtouseitassuchwill

foroutdooruse,pleaseconsultyourPharosdistributororrepresentative.
Sincetheunitsrequirenouserinterventiononceinstalledtheyaresuitableforremoteinstallation

RESETSWITCH
TheEXTmayberesetbyinsertingasmallbluntobjectintotheresetholeonthefrontoftheEXT
todepresstheresetswitch.Theswitchshouldbeheldforatleastonesecond.Thiswillnotreset
theconnectedTPC.
NOTE:Theresetmustnotbeoperatedwhenuploadingprojectdatanorduring
bootloader/firmwareupdatestotheEXTorTPCascorruptionofthedataorsoftwaremay
occur,perhapsevenrenderingtheunitinoperable.
