1. Description
High voltage circuit-breaker type LTB 245E1with a single operating mechanism
type BLG 1002A.
1.1 Design of the circuit-breaker
The circuit-breaker is made up of three separate poles. These consist of three main
parts. At the bottom is an operating mechanism in an alloy housing, above this are
hollow post insulator through which the operating insulator runs and at the top is the
breaking unit. The poles are interconnected by pull-rods enclosed in a protective
tube.
Each breaking unit consists of a breaking chamber insulator, which together with an
upper and lower flange makes up the enclosure, and upper and lower current paths
and a contact system. The puffer runs on the outside of the lower current path. The
fixed contacts are integrated in the upper current path and the lower section of the
puffer.
The poles are mounted on separate hot-dipped galvanised column frames. The
frame consists of two welded formed plate halves, which are interconnected with
bolted cross stays.

1.2 The circuit-breaker’s gas system
The circuit-breaker poles are permanently filled with SF
6
gas at a pressure of
0.7 MPa abs at 20°C on circuit-breakers whose performance is limited by a lowest
ambient temperature of -30°C.
On circuit-breakers whose ambient temperature is -40°C the circuit-breaker is
filled to a pressure of 0.5 MPa abs at 20°C. On circuit- breakers whose ambient
temperature is -55°C the circuit-breaker is filled with a mixture of SF
6
gas and N
2
gas or CF
4
gas at a pressure of 0.7 MPa abs at 20°C. The poles are fitted with
density monitors to monitor the pressure.
1.2.1 Opening and closing
The circuit-breaker poles work according to the Auto-Puffer
TM
- principle with a
puffer cylinder (1) divided into two chambers. An Auto-Puffer
TM
section (2) and a
compression section (3).
When the normal operating currents are cut
the SF
6
gas is compressed in the
compression section to an over-pressure.
When the arcing contacts part, the gas in
the compression section flows out and
extinguishes the arc at the passage trough
zero.
When the short-circuit currents are cut the
requisite extinguishing pressure is built-up
in the Auto-Puffer
TM
section by heating the
arc. In this way a pressure increase is
achieved with energy from the arc and no
extra energy is required from the operating
mechanism.
On closing the puffer cylinder slides
upwards, the contacts engage one another
and the puffer cylinder is refilled with gas.

1.3 Operating mechanism
LTB circuit-breaker is operated by a motor-charged spring operating mechanism
type BLG.
The operating mechanism is connected to the poles’ mechanism on the circuit-
breaker pole via a pull-rod system.
The circuit-breaker is closed by the operating mechanism, which houses the closing
springs. On closing, the opening springs are tensioned, which are permanently
coupled to the poles’ operating mechanisms. The trip latch in the operating
mechanism keeps the circuit-breaker in the closed position. Opening of the circuit-
breaker only requires the release of the trip latch..
The normal operating cycle is:
O-0.3s-CO-3 min-CO (according to IEC) or CO-15s-CO (according to ANSI).
1.4 Standards
The circuit-breakers comply with the requirements according to IEC Publication
60056 and in most cases also ANSI C37 and are restrike-free when breaking a
capacitive load.

1. Description
The spring operating mechanism BLG 1002A is intended for operating a circuit-
breaker with integrated opening springs. The opening springs are charged
automatically by the mechanism on closing of the circuit-breaker, whereby the
requisite energy for opening is obtained. Under no circumstances may the
mechanism be operated with the spring battery charged, without first being fitted
and trimmed with the associated circuit-breaker.
In principle the operating mechanism consists of a spring battery, which is charged
by a motor fitted with a worm gear, and a mechanism for actuating the opening and
closing action. The spring battery is automatically charged after each closing
operation.
The component parts of the operating mechanism are integrated in a cabinet, which
also contains a control panel with operating equipment. The top and doors of the
cabinet can be removed to facilitate service and overhaul procedures.
The standard operating cycle is O - 0.3 s - CO - 3 min - CO. The time between
closing operations should not be less than 1 minute during the testing of circuit-
breakers and relay systems involving more than 3 closing operations.

1.1 Normal operating mode
During normal service the circuit-breaker is in the closed position. The opening
spring (14) on the circuit-breaker and the closing springs (7) in the operating
mechanism are charged. The circuit-breaker is kept in the closed position by the
operating mechanism’s opening catch gear (1).

1.2 Opening operation
The latch in the opening catch gear (1) is released on opening of the circuit-breaker
(1). The opening spring (14) pulls, via the pull-rod (13), the operating lever (4) to
the left. The movement is damped by the opening dashpot (3) at the end position
before the operating lever (4) rests against the cam disc (5).

On closing of the circuit-breaker, the latch is released in the closing catch gear (2).
The chain section (17) is released and transfers the closing spring’s (7) energy to the
cam disc (5). The cam disc rotates 360° clockwise and pulls the operating lever (4)
to the right until the opening catch gear (1) engages. The movement is damped in
the end position by the closing dashpot (12). The opening spring (14) is charged via
the pull-rod (13).
The chain section (18) travels up the same path as the chain section (17) travels
down.

2. Component units
2.1 Drive unit
The drive unit is supplied with one or two motor options for 60, 110 or 220 V DC
and 50, 60 Hz AC.
The motor should be able to charge the springs at 85% of the nominal voltage (IEC).

2.2 Mechanical interlock
The interlocking mechanism prevents a closing operation from being carried out if
the circuit-breaker is already in the closed position or if the operating mechanism’s
closing springs are uncharged or not fully charged, which can occur, for example, if
the closing catch gear is opened by hand or if a mechanical fault occurs in the catch
gear.

2.3 Catch gear
The operating mechanism is fitted as standard with one closing coil and two
opening coils, but on request can be equipped with double coils on the closing side.
The standard voltage of the coil is 110, 220 V DC or AC, but other voltages may
occur.
The rated output of the coils is 200 W as standard. As an option there are coils with
a rated output of 450 W when 2-cycle interruption at 60 Hz is demanded.

2.4 Dashpots
The operating mechanism is equipped with one Closing dashpot to brake the
rotating movement of the cam disc and one Opening dashpot to dampen the final
phase of the opening movement.

2.5 Auxiliary contact
The operating mechanism is equipped as standard with a 6-pole auxiliary contact
consisting of six opening and six closing contacts. Three closing and one opening
contact are used for the functioning of the operating mechanism. There is a
possibility of supplementing with six or twelve extra contacts.
The shaft of the auxiliary contact is in direct connection with the operating
mechanism’s operating lever and accordingly follows the movement of the breaker
contacts.
