CellPhone driver as described below.
3A . Installation Procedure for Windows 3.1x or Windows95
Proceed as follows:
1. Install the modem communication software, if not already installed,
as described in the User Guide that came with the modem.
2. Start Windows 3.1x or Windows 95.
Insert the PC Card modem in the PCMCIA slot.
3. Insert the diskette that came with the cellphone cable into drive A.
4. For Windows 3.1x, start the Program Manager. From the File Menu,
choose Run.
Or
For Windows 95, click on the Start button and choose Run.
5. The Run window appears similar to that shown below. Type:
A:\SETUP” and click on OK.
Run A:\SETUP
6. The following screen appears. Click Continue to install the modem
upgrade utility.
Page 7
7. When the following screen appears, click continue to install the
modem upgrade utility in c:\modem directory.
8. After the installation of the utility is complete, the following screen
appears and a program group icon “Modem Upgrade Utility” is
created as shown below.
9. Running Modem Upgrade Utility
Make sure the PC Card modem is inserted in the PCMCIA slot. Make
sure the computer is on AC Power or the battery is fully charged.
Disable screen saver and switch off suspend/resume mode. If the
computer supports power saving features, go to Start/Settings/
Control Panel/Power and click on PC-Card Modems tab. Make sure
the box “Turn off PC-Card modem, when not in use” is NOT
checked.
Double click on modem Upgrade Utility icon to install the
appropriate cellphone drivers for your cellphone. Please note that
you need to run the Modem Upgrade utility only once, unless you
need to install some different CellPhone model.
Page 8
The software will test for presence of modems on different COM
ports. If the following message appears, click Yes to continue.
When the following message appears, click on Yes.
Page 9
10. The Load Driver window appears as shown below. Select the
appropriate cellphone model and Firmware list (e.g., Select
1510C_US.336 for 33.6 kbauds) and click on load driver. The driver is
downloaded into the modem flash memory. This takes from five to
ten minutes. Once the driver is downloaded, there is no need to
download the driver again unless you change cellphone models.
CAUTION
Please DO NOT cancel the download, once you have started
loading the driver. Cancelling abruptly may damage the firmware on
the modem. Even if you need to change the driver, wait until the
download process is completed and then load the appropriate driver.
11. After the driver is downloaded, the following screen appears. Once
the driver is downloaded, AutoLine Setup automatically configures
the modem for cellular use. So there’s no need to reboot each time
you switch between a telephone and a cellular connection. Exit the
Load Driver window by choosing Exit.
Page 10
12. Once the appropriate drivers are loaded and the modem is reset,
the following message appears to indicate that the firmware upgrade
is complete. Click OK.
Congratulations! The cellphone driver update installation for PC Card
modem is complete. The AutoLine setup will automatically detect whenever
you use the modem with a cellphone. So, there is no need to run the modem
upgrade utility, unless you need to use a different CellPhone model.
After the firmware upgrade is complete, connect the cellphone to the
modem using the cellphone cable.
Page 11
4. Using the CellPhone with Cellphone cable
Switch off the CellPhone, insert the modem PC Card in the PCMCIA slot
and connect the Cellphone to the modem using the cellphone cable. Then
switch on the CellPhone and Use the modem as directed in the documenta-
tion that came with the modem.
If you are using the dialup networking through cellular phone, please read
the following section to modify the dialup networking settings for cellular
connection.
4A. Modifying Dialup Networking for Cellular Connection
1. Double click Dialup Networking located under “My Computer”.
2. It is strongly recommended that the user makes or creates two separate
connections for dialup networking, one for regular landline phone connec-
tion, another for cellular connection. This will allow the user to define the
best possible connection for either “landline” or “cellular” as shown
below.
3. To change the setting on the current cellular connection, highlight the
Page 12
CellPhone connection icon, go to file and click on proprieties. This will
show how the connection is currently setup.
4. First verify that the correct modem is selected. Next click on Configure.
On the cellular connection, it is advisable to turn down the baud rate to
around 19200 bps. This will allow for a more stable connection. With baud
rates higher than 19200 bps, the modem has a hard time filtering out noise,
which actually either slows down the modem or disconnects it.
5. Another setting, which is very helpful in determining if a good connection
Page 13
is to be established, is to set the dialup connection to bring up a pre-dial up
terminal window. This is checked under the OPTIONS tab. This allows
the user to issue AT commands to verify a stable connection.
6. Now that these changes have been made, you are ready to connect. Plug
the cell phone cable into the modem and into the cell phone, turn the
phone on and launch your Dial-up networking account. You will see a
Pre-Dial Terminal Screen, which will have a blinking cursor in the upper
left-hand side.
7. From here, you can now issue AT commands to the modem to see if the
Page 14
modem is responding and is ready to connect via cellular. First type AT
and press enter on your keyboard. You should receive the response OK.
This tells you that the modem is ready and is waiting further instructions.
Now type AT^T6. You should receive one of the following responses:
000 = Cellular driver loaded, no cellular cable attached to the modem.
160 = Cellular driver loaded, phone is off.
176 = Cellular driver loaded, phone is on. (Ready to Connect)
184 = Cellular driver loaded, phone is on, no cellular service found.
Error = No cellular driver loaded.
Of course, you’re looking for a 176 response. If this is returned, then press
F7 and the Dial-Up Connection will continue as usual. However, you
should see the phone number flash across the LCD screen of the cellphone,
as if it were speed dialing.
Now, you are ready to connect through dialup networking using a
cellphone.
